The most important Enshrouded beginner tips are simple: place a Flame Altar early as your base, rescue the Blacksmith first and never walk into the Shroud without watching your timer. Everything else, from Flame Levels to better gear, builds on those three steps.
These tips are your starting point for the first hours in Embervale. Each one explains what matters and points you to the detailed guide for that topic, so you find your way quickly in version 1.0.
๐ฅ Tip 1: The Flame Altar is your home
Shortly after you start, you light your first Flame Altar. It's your base, respawn point and fast travel destination in one. Inside its build area, every change to the terrain stays permanent. Outside, the world resets over time. Per the 1.0 changelog, placing that first altar is also designed to trigger your first level-up.
The altar has two upgrade paths that beginners often mix up. Upgrading the altar only enlarges the build area, while strengthening the Flame raises the Flame Level of your world. Only the Flame Level extends your time in the Shroud and opens deeper areas. Every level with its materials is in our Flame Altar levels guide.
Where to put your base and how comfort, chests and terraforming work is covered in our Enshrouded base building guide.
โ๏ธ Tip 2: Rescue the Blacksmith first
Craftspeople in Enshrouded aren't merchants. They are sleeping survivors in vaults that you wake up and bring into your altar's build area with the Summoning Staff. The main quest "Find The Sleeping Survivor" leads you to Oswald Anders, the Blacksmith, whose vault is the easiest one according to community guides.
The Blacksmith brings the Smelter and Charcoal Kiln, and with them better tools and weapons. If you follow the quest line, freeing him should trigger your second level-up. After him come the Alchemist, Hunter, Farmer and Carpenter. Locations and a sensible order are in our Enshrouded craftspeople guide.
๐ซ๏ธ Tip 3: Take the Shroud timer seriously
The Shroud is the toxic fog that covers valleys and deeper areas. As soon as you step in, a timer counts down. At Flame Level 1 you have five minutes according to the community wiki, and when it hits zero, your character dies. Outside the fog, the timer refills.
- Hourglass capsules in the Shroud buy you extra time. With 1.0 they appear in many more places, add about 70 percent more time and also drop from large Fell enemies.
- Materials from your backpack stay where you died on default settings. Head out with an empty backpack.
- Required Flame Level: Deeper Shroud areas require a specific Flame Level, and a full timer won't get you through.
How to extend the timer with skills and potions, and what's behind a suddenly shorter timer, is in our Shroud timer guide.
๐ณ Tip 4: Spend skill points with a plan
Enshrouded has no fixed class choice. Every level-up and every destroyed Shroud Root gives you skill points for one big, connected skill tree. Early on, the two Shroud skills Inner Fires and Relentless Flame are worth it because both extend your maximum time in the fog. Keep in mind that 1.0 adjusted the cost and position of Inner Fires and made stacked Shroud time extensions less effective overall.
Mistakes aren't a big deal: you can refund points at the Flame Altar for runes. How that works is in our skill points guide, and which playstyles pay off is in the Enshrouded builds guide.
๐ฒ Tip 5: Never leave on an empty stomach
Food in Enshrouded works mainly through buffs. Meals fill food slots and boost your stats for a set time. Eat before every trip and you'll last much longer in fights and in the fog.
Better meals come with Emily Fray, the Farmer, whom you rescue through the Hunter's quest. Which dishes boost which stats is in our Enshrouded food buffs guide.
๐ช Tip 6: Glider and Ancient Spires for fast routes
Embervale is big and very vertical. Two things save a lot of walking: the glider, which the Carpenter makes according to community sources, and the Ancient Spires. These tall towers reveal part of the map and serve as fast travel points, just like your Flame Altars.
One of the best beginner tips: climb every Ancient Spire you pass. From the top you glide straight into the next area. All spires and how fast travel works are in our Enshrouded fast travel guide.
๐น Tip 7: Fight bosses at the right level
From Flame Level 3, every Flame upgrade needs a boss head. The first required fight is the Scavenger Matron, who shows up in the Springlands and other regions. Later bosses include the Fell Wispwyvern in Revelwood and the Fell Monstrosity in the Nomad Highlands.
Our advice: go by the level range of the biome and eat before the fight. With 1.0, enemies recover their health gradually when you leave the combat area, so a quick second attempt starts with part of the boss's health still missing.
โ๏ธ Tip 8: Mine ores by region
Each metal belongs to a biome: according to the community wiki, you find copper in Revelwood, tin in the Nomad Highlands and iron in the Kindlewastes. You don't have to hoard everything at once. Still, take a bit more than you need on every trip, because the Flame Altar asks for large amounts later.
๐ก๏ธ Tip 9: Find gear instead of only crafting it
According to the "Forging the Path" patch notes, crafted armor almost always has Rare quality. Epic and legendary pieces only come as loot, for example from chests and the Hollow Halls. Upgrade good finds with runes at the matching craftsperson and salvage everything you don't need into runes. With 1.0, wooden chests can also hold gear at silver chest level, and the legendary chance in all chests went up by 5 percent.
How the system works in detail is in our guide to Enshrouded legendary weapons.
๐ฅ Tip 10: Play together
You can play Enshrouded entirely solo, but a lot goes faster in co-op. On Steam, Keen Games lists up to 16 players, while the PlayStation Store lists up to 8 online players with PS Plus for the PS5 version. According to Keen's support, a dedicated server stores the world's progress, while each player keeps their own character progress.
How to set up a shared world or run your own server is in our dedicated server and co-op guide. Check whether your PC runs the game smoothly with our Enshrouded system requirements.
๐ก More Enshrouded beginner tips
A few small tips save beginners a lot of frustration in the first hours:
- Bring an axe: You chop Shroud Roots with an axe. Each one gives a skill point to every player nearby and a Shroud Core for the altar.
- Know the Fell Curse: Some Fell enemies cut your Shroud time considerably. The Fell Curse Cleansing Tonic removes the curse; the Alchemist gives you the quest for it.
- A roof for your survivors: Community guides recommend giving every rescued survivor a roof over their head. One shared house is enough.
- Rescue every survivor: From Flame Level 3, the altar requires a minimum number of rescued survivors, and Flame Level 9 needs 14.
๐ What beginners should know about version 1.0
With version 1.0 on October 15, 2026, Enshrouded left Early Access on PC and PS5 at the same time. Keen Games presented several combat changes on September 23, 2026 that affect beginners too:
- Higher level cap: Players now reach level 50, and gear goes up to level 55.
- New skill tree: Because of new skills and moved nodes, the tree resets when you load an old save. Respend your points before you leave the base.
- New enemies: Every faction gets new variants, including heavy and elite enemies.
The official 1.0 patch notes also matter for new players: early recipes are cheaper, the Springlands and Revelwood have more chests, and roads and enemy camps in the starting area were reworked for better orientation. Our Enshrouded beginner tips focus on basics that don't change from patch to patch. Platforms and dates are in our Enshrouded 1.0 overview.

Which Enshrouded beginner tips matter first?
Place your first Flame Altar, follow the main quest to the Blacksmith and set up your base with a workbench and chests. Only then go deeper into the fog.
Can you play Enshrouded solo?
Yes. Keen Games describes Enshrouded as a game for solo and co-op play, and teammates are optional.
How long can I stay in the Shroud at the start?
Five minutes at Flame Level 1, according to the community wiki. Each additional Flame Level adds a minute.
Which craftsperson should I get first?
The Blacksmith. The main quest leads you to him, and he unlocks better tools and weapons.
Can I reset my skill points?
Yes, at the Flame Altar for runes. With version 1.0, the game resets the tree anyway the first time you load an old save.
Is now a good time to start?
Yes. Version 1.0 came out on October 15, 2026, so a fresh start makes sense now. If you continue an old save, you need to respend your skill tree on first load.
