- โ Frequently Asked Questions about the Enshrouded Shroud timer
The Enshrouded Shroud timer is the one number you have to watch: it starts at the top of your screen when you enter the fog and kills you when it hits zero. You get more time from your Flame Level, two skills and potions, plus refill points along the way.
This guide explains what exactly happens when the timer runs out, how much time you can squeeze out in theory, and why your timer is sometimes only half as long for no obvious reason. The full table of all Flame Levels belongs to the Flame Altar; this guide covers everything else.
โณ How the Enshrouded Shroud timer works
The Shroud is the toxic fog that covers the valleys and low-lying areas of Embervale. As soon as you step into it, your remaining time counts down at the top of the screen. Leave the fog, and it recharges. So if you climb out of a hollow onto a hill for a moment, you win time back.
How long the timer lasts depends first and foremost on the Flame Level of your world. On level 1, you have five minutes; every further level adds one minute, up to 13 minutes on level 9. All levels with materials, Sparks and boss trophies are listed in our guide to the Enshrouded Flame Altar.
Besides time, there's a second gate: the passage level. Deeper fog areas require a specific Flame Level. If you're below it, even a full timer won't help you: there, your time burns down in seconds, and you won't last long.
๐ What happens when the Shroud timer runs out
When the timer hits zero, your character dies. The community wiki treats death by fog the same as any other death from enemies or fall damage. You then respawn at your last respawn point or the last Flame you visited.
The real cost is your inventory. On the default setting, the materials in your backpack stay behind where you died, and you have to pick them up there, which is exactly where the fog just got you. You can change this in the world settings: keep everything, lose everything, or stay with the default.
- The default rule covers the materials in your backpack, according to the community wiki. If you head out with an empty backpack, you lose almost nothing when you die.
- The way back leads into the fog again. Start with a full timer and plan the shortest route back to where you died, or you'll die a second time in the same spot.
โซ How to get more time in the fog
There are permanent and temporary ways to extend your time in Enshrouded. Your Flame Level and skills are permanent, potions are temporary. The values come from the English community wiki.
| Source | Effect | Duration | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flame Level | +1 minute per level (5 to 13 minutes) | permanent, applies to the whole world | materials at the Flame Altar |
| Skill Inner Fires | +2 minutes | permanent | 2 skill points |
| Skill Relentless Flame | +5 minutes | permanent | 4 skill points |
| Shroud Survival Flask | +2 minutes | 45 minutes | recipe from Balthazar the Alchemist |
| Greater Shroud Survival Flask | +4 minutes | 45 minutes | Alchemist and Alchemy Station |
๐งฎ How much time you can get in theory
Adding up the permanent sources, you get 13 minutes from Flame Level 9 plus 7 minutes from both skills, so 20 minutes. With the Greater Flask, that becomes 24 minutes, almost five times the starting value. None of the sources we checked confirms whether both potions stack, so we only count the stronger one.
๐ณ The two skills in the skill tree
According to the community wiki, Inner Fires and Relentless Flame sit in the Survivor and Beastmaster area of the skill tree. Together they cost six points. If you explore a lot, this is the best early investment, because the seven minutes apply right away and on every trip.
Two more skills give you time back in combat:
- Shroud Filter (Healer area, 3 points): magic damage has a 15 percent chance to trigger a flame burst that restores 30 seconds of time to you and allies within 20 meters.
- Purification (Tank and Warrior area, 3 points): every melee kill on an infested enemy gives you 5 seconds back.
๐งช Using potions the right way
The flasks last 45 minutes and raise your maximum time, not your current time. So drink them before you enter the fog. A note on the recipe: the ingredients of the basic flask differ between databases, apparently because the recipe changed during Early Access. What Balthazar shows you in the game is what counts.
๐ Refilling your timer on the go
More maximum time is only half the equation when you manage the Enshrouded Shroud timer. Spots where your timer fills back up matter just as much.
- Hourglasses: small glowing containers inside the fog. Interacting with one resets the timer to its maximum; after that, it's used up for a while.
- Respawn points: as long as you stand near one, your time refills without limit, according to the community wiki.
- Lamps with sparkling lights: they mark safe paths through dense fog areas.
๐ช Destroying Shroud Roots
Deep inside some fog areas, such as the Elixir Wells, grows a Shroud Root. You chop it down with an axe, usually only after a boss and surrounded by more enemies. Your reward is a skill point for every player nearby and a Shroud Core for upgrading your altar.
Once the root is gone, the fog clears in a small radius around it. According to community guides, there's no item that removes the fog permanently at any spot you like, and a Flame Altar placed in the fog doesn't clear it either.
โ ๏ธ Dangers that eat your time
๐น The Fell and the Fell Curse
The fog is home to the Fell, up to large bosses. Some of them inflict the Fell Curse. Its in-game description says it shortens your time in the fog considerably. The curse stays until you remove it.
That explains the most common question in the forums: "Why is my timer suddenly so much shorter?" One player on the Steam community reported having only five minutes instead of ten on Flame Level 6 until he found the curse was the cause. That's a player report, not an official value.
The cure is the Fell Curse Cleansing Tonic, made from 2 Fresh Shroud Spores and 1 Water. You get the recipe through the Alchemist's quest "A Cure For The Fell Curse". The tonic removes the curse instantly, so your full time is back. It then protects you from a new curse for one hour.
๐ด Deadly fog
Red-tinted fog is the deadly variant, where you can barely survive. Your timer drains many times faster there, and a full timer often lasts only seconds. The community wiki also mentions explosive puffballs in the fog, for example near Fort Kelvin. Keep your distance from them or destroy them from range.
๐ก๏ธ Gear with a downside
According to the community wiki, some armor pieces lower your maximum time in the fog, and some potions with combat bonuses also cost time. So read the tooltip on every new item. If your time suddenly runs short, check your gear first and then the Fell Curse.
๐ก Checklist for trips into the fog
- Let the timer recharge fully outside so you can make the whole trip.
- Drink a survival flask before you go in and pack a Cleansing Tonic.
- Empty your backpack so a death costs as little as possible.
- Bring an axe in case a root is on your way.
- Plan hourglasses and respawn points along your route.
- Check the area's passage level before you invest time.
In co-op, it's worth having one player with Shroud Filter, because their flame burst refills the whole group. How to set up a shared world is explained in our guide to co-op and dedicated servers.
๐ Current state and what may change with 1.0
All values apply to the current Early Access state, which has been running since January 24, 2024. Keen Games has scheduled version 1.0 for October 15, 2026, on PC and PS5, with the Xbox version planned for spring 2027. Co-op supports up to 16 players on PC and up to 8 on PS5; crossplay between the two hasn't been officially confirmed. Keen's 1.0 combat preview from September 23, 2026, also announces another skill tree reset, so the skills listed here, timers and recipes, and with them your time in the fog, may still change.
