Enshrouded System Requirements 2026: Minimum Specs, Shaders and Steam Deck

Enshrouded System Requirements 2026: Minimum Specs, Shaders and Steam Deck

The Enshrouded system requirements on Steam call for at least a GTX 1060 or RX 580 with 6 GB of VRAM, 16 GB of RAM and 60 GB of free space on Windows 10 (64-bit). For the recommended tier, Keen Games lists an RTX 2070 Super or RX 6700 XT, an Intel i7-8700 or Ryzen 7 2700X and an SSD.

The specs are only half the story, though. On first launch, many players wait a long time for shader compilation, and Keen Games itself called that a major pain point. With version 1.0 on October 15, 2026, the studio cut compilation times significantly according to the patch notes. This guide puts the numbers in context, explains the wait at startup, clears up the Steam Deck status and shows where to start on weaker hardware.

๐Ÿ” What the system requirements really mean

Three things stand out in the Enshrouded system requirements compared to other survival games.

16 GB of RAM as the minimum

Many games of this size start at 8 GB. Enshrouded asks for 16 GB even at minimum, and the recommended tier doesn't ask for more. So more RAM isn't an official lever for better performance, but less is a risk. Keen lowered memory use "significantly" with the "Forging the Path" update (version 0.9.1.0, April 2026), according to the patch notes, and 1.0 reduces memory and video memory use further.

6 GB of VRAM as the floor

The 6 GB VRAM note in both tiers is notable. A GTX 1060 with 3 GB explicitly doesn't meet the requirements, even though it carries the same name. If you have an older card, check the memory size and not just the model, for example in Task Manager under Performance and GPU.

The SSD is more than a suggestion

The world is built from voxels, streams in constantly as you explore and changes as soon as you dig or build. A classic hard drive slows that down noticeably, and player reports say shader compilation benefits from fast storage too. Steam only puts "SSD recommended" in the higher tier, but in practice it belongs in both.

โณ Shader compilation: the real hurdle

On first launch, the game prepares shaders for your graphics card. That takes time, and it's the most common complaint in the Steam discussions. Players there report roughly 5 to 20 minutes, in some cases more than an hour. Those are community figures, not values from Keen, and they depend heavily on CPU and storage.

Keen Games didn't dodge the topic. In the official patch notes for the "Wake of the Water" update (version 0.9.0.0, November 2025), the studio wrote: "We are fully aware that the shader compilation times are a major pain point for many." A reworked solution was in progress but "not yet on the stability level we need".

In January 2026, Keen named shader compilation as a focus of further optimization, as Game Informer and others reported about the roadmap. In September came an official video on the performance improvements for 1.0, covering shaders as well as shadows, global illumination, reflections, ray tracing and vegetation.

The official patch notes for version 1.0.0.0 confirm the result: shader compilation after game updates or GPU driver installs is now significantly shorter, though a small amount of compile time remains unavoidable. Keen also lists lower memory use, savings in video memory and better performance on handhelds, low-end graphics cards and the Steam Deck. The patch notes give no minute values.

How to get through the wait

  • Let it finish once: According to player reports, the long compilation happens after installation, after driver updates and after bigger game updates, not on every launch. Don't cancel the first run.
  • Install on an SSD: That helps with world streaming and, from community experience, with compilation too.
  • Don't disable the shader cache: Limiting or clearing the shader cache in your driver forces the game into a new run.
  • Launch before co-op night: After a big update, start the game once a while before you meet up with friends.

โš™๏ธ Settings for PCs below the recommended specs

Enshrouded includes upscalers. DLSS for Nvidia cards was there at the Early Access launch according to reports, and FSR 3 arrived with the "Back to the Shroud" update in July 2024, at the time explicitly without frame generation. The "Forging the Path" patch notes still list DLSS and FSR as in-game upscalers.

The following order is a practical recommendation, not official guidance from Keen:

  1. Turn on an upscaler: DLSS or FSR in quality mode usually gives the biggest jump.
  2. Drop the graphics preset one step: Keen specifically improved voxel detail on the medium preset according to the patch notes, so it isn't a last resort.
  3. Lower shadows and global illumination: Keen covers both as optimization areas in its 1.0 performance video, and dialing them back noticeably eases the load on your GPU.
  4. Check ray-traced reflections: Since "Wake of the Water", the game uses ray tracing for reflections on ice and water. On older cards, that's the first thing to switch off.

The game itself also creates load: large bases with many light sources and water flowing over long distances cost performance. Keen last sped up the water simulation with "Forging the Path", and 1.0 reworked point light shadows to reduce their performance impact in large player builds. New in 1.0 is HDR support with its own calibration screen.

๐ŸŽฎ Enshrouded on the Steam Deck

Two official sources contradict each other here. In its own Steam Deck support article from January 2024, Keen Games writes that the game runs with the recommended default settings. As known issues, Keen lists a black screen for one to two minutes on first launch while the client and shaders are prepared, and a loss of focus after closing the on-screen keyboard.

Valve's own review, however, rates Enshrouded as unsupported on the Steam Deck, citing insufficient graphics performance. The official system requirements don't mention the Deck at all. So the game starts, but Valve doesn't consider the performance sufficient. If you play on the Deck anyway, expect low frame rates and don't push the default settings up. According to the 1.0 patch notes, the game runs better on the Steam Deck than in Early Access; whether Valve changes its rating is open.

As an alternative, Keen names NVIDIA GeForce Now in supported regions in its support article on the Enshrouded system requirements. The server does the work, and the Deck only needs a stable connection.

๐ŸŒ Dedicated server: different requirements

If you want to host a world permanently for friends, you need separate hardware that has nothing to do with the Enshrouded system requirements for the game. Keen lists its own values: 16 GB of RAM, an SSD and about 2 Mbit/s upload per player, plus a six- or eight-core CPU depending on group size. The full table and setup are in our dedicated server and co-op guide.

Performance isn't only about frame rate. If you spend a lot of time in the Shroud, you need a smooth game for dodging and watching the timer. Tips are in our Shroud timer guide.

โ“ Enshrouded system requirements FAQ

Does Enshrouded run with 8 GB of RAM?

Not officially. The Enshrouded system requirements list 16 GB of RAM even as the minimum. Keen doesn't name a lower configuration, so with less you play without any guarantee.

Is a GTX 1060 with 3 GB enough?

No. Steam explicitly requires 6 GB of VRAM, and the 3 GB version falls short.

Why does the first launch take so long?

The game compiles shaders for your graphics card on first launch. With version 1.0, Keen significantly shortened compile times after updates and driver changes, according to the patch notes.

Is Enshrouded good on the Steam Deck?

Valve rates it as unsupported because of graphics performance. Keen says it runs with the default settings. It's playable, but with compromises.

Is Enshrouded available for Linux or Mac?

No, the Steam requirements only list Windows 10 (64-bit). An official Linux or Mac version hasn't been announced.

Do the system requirements change with version 1.0?

The 1.0 patch notes don't list new values, but they do mention lower memory use and better performance on weaker hardware. Check the Steam page directly to see whether Keen updates the listed specs. All 1.0 changes are sorted in our Enshrouded 1.0 patch notes.

๐Ÿ“Œ Status and sources

The table reflects the Steam store page as it stood before 1.0. Keen's support article on the system requirements still carries the date January 24, 2024 and doesn't list Intel Arc cards. The Steam page already lists Arc A380 and A770 and is the more current source; where they differ, the Steam page applies.

Checked against the Steam store page, Keen Games' support articles on system requirements and the Steam Deck, the official patch notes for "Wake of the Water" and "Forging the Path", the official changelog for version 1.0.0.0 and Valve's Steam Deck review. Community figures on compile times are marked as such. As of October 15, 2026.
