Enshrouded Mods After the 1.0 Release: Install Guide, EML Loader and World Backups

Enshrouded Mods After the 1.0 Release: Install Guide, EML Loader and World Backups

Enshrouded mods exist only on PC and only through unofficial tools, because Keen Games offers no official mod support. Version 1.0 on October 15, 2026 replaced the game files, so old Early Access patches and mod loaders no longer work. Since October 16, EML 0.2.0 is a mod loader with 1.0 support. Every single mod still needs its own 1.0 version.

This guide covers what Keen Games itself says about modding, which kinds of modifications exist, how to install the loader, what works on a dedicated server and the order to follow. Anything that only comes from community or hosting sources is marked as such.

๐Ÿ“œ What Keen Games officially says about mods

The only official statement is in the FAQ on enshrouded.com. Asked whether the game supports modifications, Keen Games writes: "we cannot make promises that the game will be moddable". The studio adds that it would like to add it in the future.

That FAQ is old. Elsewhere it still says the game will launch in Steam Early Access first, and it apparently hasn't been updated since the January 2024 launch. Mod support doesn't appear in the official 1.0 posts we went through for our Enshrouded 1.0 overview, including the changelog for version 1.0.0.0 and the launch FAQ from October 13, 2026. So the situation is: no API, no Workshop, no promise.

๐Ÿงฉ Types of Enshrouded mods

There is still an active scene. On October 9, 2026, Nexus Mods listed exactly 106 Enshrouded mods, while server host GameServerKings counted 104 on September 28. Technically they fall into four groups:

TypeExampleHow it worksWorks on the server?
Mod loader with scriptsEML (Enshrouded Mod Loader)loads Lua scripts at startup, changes game datayes, for client and server according to the developer
Archive patcherMore Stack Size, Enshrouded Patcherrewrites the game's data archiveyes, usually server-side only
Single DLL filesGlobal XP Sharehooks into the running game, tied to one game versiondepends on the mod
Client-only extrasCheat Engine tables, ReShadevisuals or values on your own PC onlyno

The categories and examples come from the mod guides of the hosts Survival Servers and GameServerKings, not from Keen Games. According to Survival Servers, an older loader called Shroudtopia has been broken since the big April 2026 update, and no fix for 1.0 is expected. That rules it out for new installs.

โœ… Is EML compatible with Enshrouded 1.0?

Yes, from version 0.2.0. According to WinterNode, the release notes say: "Added compatibility for Enshrouded 1.0." Older versions such as 0.1.2 from April 27 don't support 1.0. WinterNode tested 0.2.0 on a 1.0 test server: the loader loaded and the server started. The host didn't test individual mods.

We took our own look at the public repository. Version 0.2.0 is tagged there in the night from October 16 to 17 (German time), about 32 hours after release. A few hours earlier, the developer changed the data archive's identifier from "KFC3" to "KFC4", among other things. That suggests the format of the game data itself changed with 1.0, which is why old patches no longer apply. As of October 27, there was no version newer than 0.2.0.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ How to install Enshrouded mods with EML 0.2.0

These steps follow the project's official usage guide. They apply to the Steam version on PC and to a dedicated server:

  1. Remove the old version. If a dbghelp.dll from before 1.0 is still in your game folder, take it out. The guide explicitly warns about conflicts.
  2. Download the new dbghelp.dll. It's on the release page of the "kfc-parser" project by Brabb3l on GitHub. Extract the archive.
  3. Copy it into the main folder. The dbghelp.dll goes straight into the Enshrouded installation folder, next to the game executable.
  4. Create a "mods" folder. Also in the main folder, if it doesn't exist yet. Your mods go in there.
  5. Launch the game. The first launch creates the eml.json file.

The eml.json has three settings: enable_console opens a console window for troubleshooting, use_export_flag lets mods export files, and export_directory sets the target folder for that. For normal play you don't need to change anything.

Linux and Steam Deck: the Steam client needs WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dbghelp=native, builtin" %command% in the launch options (Properties, General), otherwise Proton won't load the DLL. If the loader doesn't start on PC, the guide suggests using dinput8.dll instead of dbghelp.dll.

There is also the command-line program emm.exe. It validates the mods before launch and only applies them if you pass the matching flags. For most players, the DLL route is the easier one.

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Enshrouded mods on a dedicated server

For groups, the server is the interesting part. According to GameServerKings, the server is what counts: changes made there apply to everyone who joins, and other players don't have to install anything. Typical changes are larger stacks, more chest slots, higher level caps or extended server settings.

The same source notes that some patcher features also need a modified client to display correctly. According to Survival Servers, EML backs up the original data archive as a .bak file at startup and then writes a patched archive.

That fits the save logic Keen Games describes for dedicated servers: character progress stays with the player, while the world with bases and chests lives on the server. A server mod changes the world, not your character. Setting up the server itself is covered in our dedicated server and co-op guide.

The hosts agree on two pitfalls. If you let Steam verify the game files, you get the original archive back and lose the patch. And some changes, such as oversized stacks, are written into the world. Survival Servers warns that switching back to the unmodified game can make items from those stacks disappear.

โš ๏ธ What version 1.0 does to your mods

The October 15 update is no small patch. Keen Games raised the level cap to 50, gear goes up to level 55, mages got nine new spell types and the skill tree resets the first time you load an old save. Those are exactly the areas many Enshrouded mods touch.

According to the official patch notes, 1.0 also introduces a new save format with smaller files. If the game finds a save from version 0.8 or older, it creates a backup first and then converts it automatically. Your own copy before the first launch still doesn't hurt, especially for modded worlds.

  • Archive patches disappear. The update replaces the data archives. According to GameServerKings, a server with automatic updates runs the unmodified game again after its first restart on 1.0.
  • Old loaders block startup. Survival Servers writes that a server with an old loader shuts down within seconds after a big update until the loader is removed. After the April update, the fix took six days.
  • Old mods don't match new data. A mod built for the Early Access data can fail on 1.0 or set wrong values, according to GameServerKings.

๐Ÿ“Š How fast mod authors catch up after big updates

After the last big Early Access update, "Forging the Path" on April 21, 2026, the matching EML version followed on April 27, six days later. With 1.0 it was faster: about 32 hours after release. Shroudtopia, on the other hand, never even caught up with the April update.

For individual mods, that means: the loader is there, and the mods follow one by one. Whether a specific mod runs on 1.0 is only stated on its own page. Single-author projects may also end for good. That's our reading of the release dates, not a statement from the developers.

โœ… Checklist: Enshrouded mods after the 1.0 launch

Order matters. If you backed up before the update, use that copy as your fallback. Otherwise, rely on the automatic backup that 1.0 creates before converting saves from version 0.8 or older, according to the changelog:

  1. Back up your world and character. Copy the entire save folder somewhere else. Note that the location changes with 1.0: according to the official patch notes, local saves now live under C:\Users\WINDOWSUSER\Saved Games\keen games\Enshrouded\default, and the character and world menus have tabs for the local folder and Steam Cloud. Before 1.0, Steam saves were in the Steam folder under userdata, your user ID and the remote subfolder, according to Dot Esports.
  2. Back up the server. Keen keeps ten rotating copies per world. Copy the entire save folder and the enshrouded_server.json before every change, not just the newest file.
  3. Check oversized stacks. If a patch gave you larger stacks, check after the first unmodded launch whether items are missing. If something is gone, only the backup from before the update helps.
  4. Remove old loaders and patches. Take the old dbghelp.dll and the mods folder out of the game folder and replace patched archives with the originals.
  5. Verify files in Steam. That way 1.0 starts with the original files.
  6. Play the first session unmodded. Respend your skill tree and check that the world loads without errors. Tips for spending points are in our Enshrouded skill points guide.
  7. Install EML 0.2.0 or newer. Follow the installation steps above.
  8. Bring mods back one at a time. Only mods whose author announces a 1.0 version, and always one per step. Restart after each mod and stop at the first error.

๐ŸŽฎ Mods on PS5

There are no mods on console. All the tools above are Windows programs or DLL files for the PC version, and Keen Games hasn't announced anything in that direction for PS5. On PS5 you play the original game, with up to eight online players according to the PlayStation Store. More on the console version is in our guide to Enshrouded on PS5.

For mixed groups, that leads to a simple rule: modding is a PC-only topic. A modded PC world can't move to console, especially since Keen hasn't announced save transfers between platforms either.

๐Ÿ’ก Are mods worth it for a fresh 1.0 start?

Our take: not in the first few weeks. Version 1.0 brings new areas, reworked enemies and a new skill tree. Layering stack or XP changes on top of that means playing a balance nobody has tested. Mods still make sense mainly for long-running server worlds where a group deliberately wants certain convenience features.

For everyone else: play a round unmodded first, then add what you miss. Whether your PC runs the game smoothly without help is covered in our Enshrouded system requirements guide.

โ“ FAQ about Enshrouded mods

Does Enshrouded officially support mods?

No. Keen Games writes in its FAQ that it can't promise moddability but would like to add it later. Keen hasn't announced a Steam Workshop.

Is EML compatible with Enshrouded 1.0?

Yes, from version 0.2.0, released on October 16, 2026. Older versions such as 0.1.2 don't run on 1.0. Whether an individual mod works depends on whether its author has updated it for 1.0.

Do my mods still work after the 1.0 update?

Not automatically. The update replaces the game files, archive patches are gone afterwards and old loaders don't start. You need EML 0.2.0 or newer and a 1.0 version of each mod.

Where is the mods folder in Enshrouded?

You create it yourself: it's called "mods" and sits in the game's installation folder, right next to the dbghelp.dll. In Steam, you find the installation folder by right-clicking Enshrouded, then Manage, Browse local files.

Can modding break my save?

According to Survival Servers, removing the loader leaves the world untouched. Changes written into the world are the risky part, such as oversized stacks. Back up the save folder before every change.

Do players on my server need to install mods?

Not for server-side changes, according to GameServerKings, since those apply to everyone who joins. Some patcher features still need a matching version on the player's side to display correctly.

Are there Enshrouded mods on PS5?

No. All known tools only run on PC, and Keen hasn't announced anything for console.

Where do I find Enshrouded mods?

Most are on Nexus Mods, which listed 106 on October 9, 2026. Only download from there or from the author's project page, and check which game version a mod was built for before installing it.
