Enshrouded base building only works inside the build area of a Flame Altar: every wall you place and every hole you dig there stays permanently. With the Construction Hammer you place blocks of wood, stone and many other materials freely in the voxel world, with no structural integrity to worry about.
This guide shows how big the build area gets, how comfort and the Rested buff fit together, how to arrange workshops and chests and what to watch for in co-op. We also explain why Enshrouded still has no blueprints.
๐ฅ Enshrouded base building starts at the Flame Altar
The Flame Altar creates a cube-shaped build area around itself. Inside those borders, the game saves every change to buildings and terrain. Outside, the world resets the next time it restarts. So your base always belongs inside an altar's cube.
You enlarge the cube at the altar itself with Upgrade Altar. That's a separate system from Strengthen the Flame. The values come from the English community wiki at enshrouded.wiki.gg:
| Altar level | Build area in blocks | Material | Required Flame Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 40 ร 40 ร 40 | none | 1 |
| 2 | 80 ร 80 ร 80 | 1 Shroud Core | 1 |
| 3 | 120 ร 120 ร 120 | 5 Shroud Cores | 2 |
| 4 | 160 ร 160 ร 160 | 5 Shroud Nexus | 3 |
How to strengthen the Flame for the higher altar levels is covered in our Flame Altar levels guide.
๐งฑ The voxel building system and the Construction Hammer
Your most important tool is the Construction Hammer. It switches you into build mode, where you pick material and shape. There is no stability system: walls, bridges and whole houses can float in midair. That makes getting started easy and leaves you complete freedom.
The world is made of voxels, small cubes. According to the community wiki, a single block measures half a meter. Larger shapes in 2 and 4 meter versions build on that:
- Single block: for fine details, walls, roofs and terrain
- Foundations, walls and ceilings: for a quick shell
- Door and window frames, pillars and stairs
- Roof pieces: sides, corners, flat and pointed ridge pieces
On PC you switch shapes by holding Ctrl and using the mouse wheel, according to press guides. For tall builds there's scaffolding so you don't have to keep jumping. With 1.0, the new skill Airborne Architect lets you build in free flight instead.
๐ชต Making building materials
You craft blocks at the Workbench. The recipe is generous: according to the community wiki, two Wood Logs instantly become 100 rough wood blocks. Rough stone blocks work the same way. A block recipe unlocks as soon as you pick up the matching raw material for the first time, so your choice of materials grows with every new region.
Because there's no structural integrity, you choose materials purely for looks. An early wooden house can later be rebuilt in stone block by block without tearing it down.
๐๏ธ Comfort and the Rested buff
If you plan your Enshrouded base building, think about furniture early, because your cabin is more than decoration. In a proper shelter you get the Rested buff, which raises your max stamina and stamina regeneration considerably. The community wiki lists four conditions:
- no enemies nearby
- Shelter: a roof over your head
- Warmth: a fireplace, fire pit or campfire
- Comfort: furniture that gives comfort points
Each comfort level extends the buff by one minute. According to the community wiki, the Flame Altar itself counts for 5 points, and the maximum comfort level is 107 (as of May 2026). Musical instruments add two more minutes, and the Well Rested skill adds five.
๐ How to raise comfort
Comfort is split into categories: beds, tables, chairs, benches, rugs, fireplaces, lighting, wall decorations and more. Community guides say only the best item in each category counts. Ten chairs give you no more than one. Place the best piece per category that your Carpenter can make.
The buff works alongside food. Which meals add stamina is in our Enshrouded food buffs guide.
โ๏ธ Arranging workshops
Every craftsperson brings their own workshops, from the Blacksmith's Charcoal Kiln to the Farmer's Cooking Station. You summon them with the Summoning Staff inside the build area. None of our sources says how far a workshop may be from its craftsperson. You're on the safe side if both stand in the same build area.
- Group by craftsperson: the Blacksmith with Smelter and Forge in one workshop hall, the Farmer with Cooking Station and Oven near the fields.
- Short paths to chests: storage goes in the middle, workshops around it.
- A roof over every craftsperson: community guides recommend it, and one shared house is enough.
- Leave space: every quest adds more stations, such as the Blast Furnace, spinning wheel or loom.
Where to find the craftspeople and in which order is in our Enshrouded craftspeople guide.
๐ฆ Storage and chests
There are two chest families for your storage. Names and slot counts follow the community wiki (as of August 2026).
| Chest | Slots | Crafted at |
|---|---|---|
| Tiny Chest | 16 | Workbench |
| Small Chest / Small Magic Chest | 24 | Workbench |
| Medium Chest / Medium Magic Chest | 32 | Carpenter |
| Large Chest / Large Magic Chest | 40 | Carpenter |
| Huge Chest / Huge Magic Chest | 56 | Carpenter |
| Enormous Magic Chest | 72 | Carpenter |
The difference matters: workshops pull materials directly from magic chests. The community wiki gives a radius of about 100 meters but notes that the range may have changed. The Small Magic Chest is made from a Small Chest, 15 Shroud Spores and 15 Active Mycelium.
๐บ๏ธ Multiple bases and good locations
You're not limited to one altar. How many can burn at once depends on your Flame Level. In Early Access it was two at Flame Level 1 and up to ten from Flame Level 7. With 1.0, the limit rises to 15 with the new Flame Level before Cinder's Cradle and to 16 with Flame Level 11. Every altar is also a destination for fast travel.
A proven setup for Enshrouded base building: one main base with all craftspeople, plus smaller outposts near ores or at the edge of large Shroud areas. For a second fully equipped workshop, the assistants help, since they have the same recipes as the craftsperson they're based on.
What to look for in a location:
- flat ground saves terraforming, while a slope works well for cellars and terraces
- water nearby for fields and wells
- a short way into the Shroud for outposts, so the timer doesn't run out on the way
- a clear view for launching the glider from the roof
โ๏ธ Terraforming: shaping the terrain
The terrain is part of the voxel system, so you can reshape it just like your houses. With the pickaxe you dig away any hill and carve out cellars or tunnels. With terrain blocks from the Construction Hammer you fill dips, build ramps or shape your own rocks. There are also brushes for Overgrowth and Decay in three sizes.
Important: new terrain only stays inside the build area. Holes dug outside fill back in after a restart. With 1.0, undoing terraforming also works with a full backpack, but the resources don't come back in that case.
๐ฅ Co-op permissions for building
In a shared world, the host decides who can build. Keen names four roles: Visitor can't change bases, Helper fights and explores without chest access, Friend can also use chests, and Admin can kick and ban. On a dedicated server, the permissions canEditBase and canExtendBase control who can change or expand a base.
With 1.0, hosts set a default permission level for joining players with one password and can then promote or demote individual characters, who keep that role when they rejoin. On dedicated servers, user groups with passwords work as before. The base belongs to the world, not the character: if you leave, everything you built stays with the host. Roles and passwords in detail are in our dedicated server and co-op guide.
๐ Are there blueprints?
No. There was no way to save, copy and paste your own buildings during Early Access, and the 1.0 patch notes don't mention blueprints either. On Keen's feedback platform, the request has been an open suggestion since January 22, 2024, with around 3,500 votes and no visible developer response.
The closest thing is Adventure Sharing from the "Forging the Path" update: you upload your whole world with all buildings, and others can visit it. You can't transfer single buildings that way.
๐ก Enshrouded base building tips
- Altar level 2 first: one Shroud Core doubles the edge length, which pays off before your first house.
- Undo: according to community guides, Y on PC undoes your last placement.
- Comfort early: a bed, table, chair and fireplace are enough for a noticeable Rested buff.
- Don't delete the altar: deactivating it frees the area, and the buildings vanish at the next world reset.
๐ What 1.0 changes for base building
Enshrouded was in Early Access from January 24, 2024 and launched version 1.0 on October 15, 2026 for PC and PS5, with Xbox following in spring 2027. The values above come from Early Access. According to the official patch notes for version 1.0.0.0, these base building changes stand out:
- Upgrade chests in place: storage chests can be upgraded and converted to magic chests without emptying them. Chests and map markers can be named freely.
- Available earlier: the regular 24-slot storage chest and magic chests can be crafted earlier, and so can the Quick Stash Station.
- More building spots: most former no-build zones are open for bases.
- New tools: Sparkworks connects interactive elements such as switches and traps, and the Airborne Architect skill allows building in free flight.
- Factory limit: each world now has a generous cap on factories, and the game warns you before you reach it.
โ Enshrouded base building FAQ
Where can I build a base in Enshrouded?
Inside a Flame Altar's build area. Only there do buildings and terrain changes stay permanent.
How big does the build area get?
From 40 to up to 160 blocks per side, across four altar levels.
Do buildings collapse without supports?
No. Enshrouded has no stability system, so pieces can float freely.
Do several identical furniture pieces add comfort?
According to community guides, no. Only the best piece per category counts.
Can workshops take materials from chests?
Yes, from magic chests nearby. The community wiki gives a range of about 100 meters.
Are there blueprints for buildings?
No. Early Access had none, and the 1.0 patch notes don't mention any. The request is still open on Keen's feedback platform.
