Enshrouded Skill Points: How to Get, Spend and Reset Them
Enshrouded skill points come from three sources: level-ups, destroyed Shroud Roots and cleansed Elixir Wells. You spend them in the skill tree, and you can refund them anytime at a Flame Altar in exchange for runes.
This guide explains where Enshrouded skill points come from, how the skill tree is structured and what a reset costs. We also clear up a common mistake: Flame Shrines don't give skill points, they give sparks.
๐ฏ Enshrouded skill points: the three sources
The amounts below come from the English community wiki at enshrouded.wiki.gg. They are community figures, not official numbers from Keen Games.
| Source | Skill points | Repeatable? |
|---|---|---|
| Level-up | 2 per level | no, once per level |
| Destroying a Shroud Root | 1 | no, once per root and character |
| Cleansing an Elixir Well | 3 | no, once per well and character |
๐ Level-ups
You earn experience for discovering new places, finishing quests, defeating enemies and reading experience scrolls. Each level-up gives two skill points according to the community wiki. In Early Access, the level cap had been 45 since the "Wake of the Water" update (version 0.9.0.0, November 2025). Version 1.0 raises it to 50 according to the official patch notes, and gear can be upgraded to level 55. At two points per level, the 49 level-ups from level 2 to 50 add up to 98 points on paper.
With "Forging the Path", Keen Games also redistributed the experience for the first five levels. Getting started is faster, and you have enough points early for the first important nodes.
๐ฟ Shroud Roots
Shroud Roots grow deep in the fog, often at the end of an area and guarded by tougher enemies. You chop them with an axe. Every player nearby gets one skill point, plus you receive a Shroud Core and a small fog-free area around the root. How to survive there long enough is in our Shroud timer guide.
โฒ Elixir Wells
Elixir Wells are the larger fog dungeons with a boss at the end. Cleansing one gives three skill points according to the community wiki, which currently counts 19 Elixir Wells. With all of them cleansed, that's another 57 points on top of those from levels. The wiki doesn't give a reliable count of Shroud Roots, so we don't calculate a grand total here.
Version 1.0 adds new roots: according to the patch notes, Cinder's Cradle brings 12 new Shroud Roots, and the new edge regions of the Springlands, Blackmire and Kindlewastes add 6 more.
๐ Why the world doesn't hand out points again
After a server restart, roots grow back and wells refill with enemies. The Enshrouded skill points, however, only come once per root and well. Clear the same well a second time and you get loot and experience, but no extra point. In co-op it pays to stand at the root together, because every player nearby gets their point.
โฉ๏ธ Flame Shrines: sparks, not skill points
A common claim in forums says Flame Shrines give skill points. That's wrong. In Flame Shrines and the larger Flame Sanctums stands a Flame that gives you sparks when you interact with it. How many depends on the region according to the community wiki, and the sparks respawn after a while.
You need sparks at the Flame Altar to strengthen the Flame. They have nothing to do with the skill tree. What you need them for is in our Flame Altar levels guide.
๐ณ How the skill tree works
The skill tree in Enshrouded is one big web. You start in the center and unlock nodes that border an already active node. According to the community wiki, every player can follow any path as long as the nodes connect. There's no fixed class choice at the start.
- Three big directions: melee, magic, and ranged plus survival.
- Core skills in the center: for example for woodcutting, mining, sneak attacks and parrying. They help every playstyle.
- Ranks per node: since "Forging the Path", more than 80 skills can be improved with additional points according to the patch notes.
๐งญ What "Forging the Path" changed
Update 0.9.1.0 from April 21, 2026 rebuilt the tree noticeably. It added more than 20 new nodes, the tree became zoomable, and Double Jump moved to the center so every playstyle can reach it quickly.
If you loaded a save from Update 7 or older, you found the tree completely reset. According to the patch notes, all skill points were refunded and had to be spent again.
๐ What version 1.0 changes in the tree
With version 1.0.0.0 on October 15, 2026, the skill tree resets again: according to the official patch notes, that happens the first time you load an existing save in 1.0. Spend your points again afterwards.
- New skills: among them Aerial Wand Attack, Wand Evasion Attack, Advanced Necromancy, Totem Mastery, Blast and Cast, Puncture, Barrage and Survival Instinct.
- Free-flying building: the new skill Airborne Architect at the center of the tree lets you build in free flight.
- Reorganized: dagger skills moved from the warrior area to the assassin tree. Keen adjusted cost and position of several nodes, such as Veteran, One-Handed Specialization, Inner Fires and Snap.
- Cheaper: many skills cost less and have stronger effects according to the patch notes.
๐ก Basic logic for spending points
The first points usually go into nodes every playstyle needs: stamina, mobility and time in the Shroud. Two skills, Inner Fires and Relentless Flame, extend your Shroud timer permanently, and the details are in the Shroud guide. After that, pick a direction. Concrete setups are in our Enshrouded builds guide.
๐ Resetting skill points at the Flame Altar
Resets work at any active Flame Altar. Open the altar menu by interacting with the Flame and choose the option to change your skill tree.
| Action | Cost |
|---|---|
| refund a single point | 1 rune |
| full reset | 1 rune per spent point |
A full reset costs as many runes as you have spent Enshrouded skill points. The community wiki lists 1 rune per spent point, and the German database eprison.de shows an example of 149 runes for a full reset. Older German guides from January 2024 still list a flat ten runes, which is outdated.
๐ Getting runes
- Enemies in the Shroud drop runes, only a few at first.
- Chests and containers contain runes as random loot.
- Salvaging: gear you no longer need can be broken down into runes.
Be aware that since "Forging the Path", two systems compete for the same runes: armor, shields, rings, pickaxes and woodcutting axes are now upgraded with runes too, according to the patch notes. If you sink all your runes into gear, you may not be able to afford a late reset with well over a hundred spent points. Keep a reserve before big rebuilds.
๐ง Tips for resetting and spending
- Single instead of full: If you only want to swap two nodes, refund individual points and save runes.
- Rebuild before boss fights: A quick switch to more defense only costs a few runes if you do it point by point.
- Exploration first: Nodes for stamina, gliding and Shroud time pay off on every trip.
- Prioritize wells: An Elixir Well gives three times as many points as a single root.
In co-op, agree on roles so your skill points complement each other. How to set up a shared world is in our dedicated server and co-op guide. Which survivors upgrade your gear is in our Enshrouded craftspeople guide.
๐ Status and what 1.0 changed
Point sources and reset costs come from Early Access after "Forging the Path" (0.9.1.0). We added the changes from version 1.0 (level cap 50, tree reset on first load, new skills and new Shroud Roots) from the official patch notes. The patch notes don't say whether points per level or reset costs changed. Whether your PC is ready for 1.0 is in our Enshrouded system requirements guide.
