- โ Frequently Asked Questions about the Enshrouded Flame Altar
The Enshrouded Flame Altar runs two separate upgrade systems: "Upgrade Altar" only enlarges the build area, while "Strengthen the Flame" raises the Flame Level from 1 to 9. Only the Flame Level extends your time in the Shroud, opens deeper Shroud areas and gives you attribute bonuses.
This guide lists every level with its materials, Sparks and boss trophies for the current Early Access build. Many older guides date back to January 2024 and know neither level 9 nor the survivor requirement.
๐ฅ Enshrouded Flame Altar: two systems, two sets of levels
At the altar, "Commune with the Flame" opens the menu. It holds two upgrades that players mix up all the time. If you only expand the build area, you won't get a single extra second in the fog. If you strengthen the Flame, you can't build one block further.
- Upgrade Altar: affects only this one structure and grows its build area over four tiers.
- Strengthen the Flame: raises the Flame Level for your entire world. It applies everywhere at once and, according to the community wiki, never goes down again, even if you extinguish all of your altars.
The Shroud is the toxic fog that covers large parts of Embervale. Everything in this guide uses the original English menu and item names from the game.
๐๏ธ Upgrade Altar: the build area in four tiers
The build area grows in fixed cubes. Inside these borders, every change you make to the terrain stays permanent; outside of them, the world resets. Each of the four tiers needs a minimum Flame Level, so the two systems do connect after all.
| Tier | Build area | Material | Required level |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 40 ร 40 ร 40 | none | 1 |
| 2 | 80 ร 80 ร 80 | 1 Shroud Core | 1 |
| 3 | 120 ร 120 ร 120 | 5 Shroud Cores | 2 |
| 4 | 160 ร 160 ร 160 | 5 Shroud Nexus | 3 |
You find Shroud Cores inside the fog. Older guides still list ten cores for tier 3; the community wiki now lists five.
๐ What each Flame Level unlocks
Each of the nine levels raises four values at once. The numbers come from the English community wiki on wiki.gg, last edited in July 2026.
| Level | Shroud time | Shroud passage level | Attribute bonus | Active altars |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5 minutes | 1 | โ | 2 |
| 2 | 6 minutes | 2 | +1 | 4 |
| 3 | 7 minutes | 3 | +2 | 6 |
| 4 | 8 minutes | 4 | +3 | 7 |
| 5 | 9 minutes | 5 | +4 | 8 |
| 6 | 10 minutes | 6 | +5 | 9 |
| 7 | 11 minutes | 7 | +6 | 10 |
| 8 | 12 minutes | 8 | +7 | 10 |
| 9 | 13 minutes | 9 | +8 | 10 |
๐ซ๏ธ Shroud resistance: time and passage level
Your Shroud time is your resistance to the fog. When the timer runs out, you die. It starts at 5 minutes on level 1 and grows by exactly one minute per level, up to 13 minutes. Outside the fog, it recharges. Refill points, skills and potions that stretch it further are covered in our guide to the Shroud timer.
The Shroud passage level is the real gate. Deeper fog areas have their own level, and if you're below it, you can't get in no matter how much time you have left. A Steam community guide names level 3 for the Revelwood biome and level 4 for the Nomad Highlands; treat that as a community figure.
๐ช Attribute bonus and active altars
The attribute bonus applies to all of your character's base attributes, so level 9 gives you +8 on each. The number of active altars climbs from 2 to 10. Enshrouded currently doesn't allow more than ten at the same time, even at higher levels. On top of that, your base gets a growing capacity for water sources.
๐ฆ Enshrouded Flame Altar materials for every level
Each level asks for three kinds of ingredients: Sparks, a minimum number of rescued survivors from level 3 onward, and a boss trophy. On top of that come resources from the biome you could enter on the previous level. All amounts come from the Enshrouded community wiki.
| Target | Sparks | Survivors | Boss trophy | Other materials |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 2 | 1 | โ | โ | 5 each: Resin, Penny Bun, Bones, Shroud Liquid, Animal Fur |
| Level 3 | 5 | 2 | Scavenger Matron Helmet | 10 each: Wax, Salt, Shroud Wood, Flintstone; 25 Mycelium |
| Level 4 | 10 | 4 | Fell Wispwyvern Head | 15 each: Goo, Indigo Plant, Amber, Copper Ore, Corrupted Boar Tusk |
| Level 5 | 20 | 6 | Fell Monstrosity Head | 20 each: Mint Mushroom Meat, Fossilized Bone, Ammonia Gland, Tin Ore, Rooibos |
| Level 6 | 40 | 8 | Fell Sicklescythe Head | 40 each: Saffron, Iron Ore, Lapislazuli, Enshrouded Vulture Talon, Brittle Shroud Flakes |
| Level 7 | 40 | 10 | Fell Cyclops Head | 40 each: Wool, Gentian, Ice, Granite, Flammable Goo |
| Level 8 | 50 | 12 | Fell Dragon Youngling Head | 50 each: Obsidian, Silver Bars, Mauveine, Wolfsbane, Amethyst |
| Level 9 | 60 | 14 | Hydrak'Dal Head | 60 each: Gold Ore, Green Vitriol Dust, Aquamarine; 30 each: Passionflower, Pearl |
๐งฎ Total cost up to level 9
Added up, going from level 1 to 9 takes exactly 226 Sparks and eight boss trophies. Survivors work as a threshold in Enshrouded: for level 9, 14 of them must be rescued. The big hurdles are the stacks of 40, 50 and 60 from level 6 onward, and each of them needs its own farming run.
โจ Getting Sparks and survivors
You get Sparks from Flame Sanctums, stone structures with a sacred fire in the central chamber. According to a Steam community guide, a sanctum in the Springlands gives one Spark, one in Revelwood gives two, and one in the Nomad Highlands gives three. These values are community figures and not officially confirmed.
Survivors wait at fixed locations across Embervale; our guide to the Enshrouded craftspeople shows where to find them. Once rescued, you bring them to your base. Without them you can't strengthen the fire from level 3 onward, even with every material in your chest. So rescue every survivor right away, even if you don't need them yet.
๐บ๏ธ The best order for leveling up
The materials for each level mostly come from the area the previous level opened up. That gives you a steady rhythm: level up, explore the new fog area, gather its resources and the boss head, head back home. If you try to skip levels, the passage level stops you, not your Shroud time.
In practice, it pays off to grab resources for the levels after next on every trip. Otherwise, the stacks of 40 and 50 from level 6 onward cost you several extra farming runs. Also plan a detour to the Flame Sanctums for each level, because from level 6 onward Sparks are the second bottleneck after the boss trophies.
For building, the third of the four build tiers is usually enough until you reach level 3 in Enshrouded. After that, the Shroud Nexus is worth it for the full build area of 160 blocks per side, especially at your main base with your workshops and craftspeople.
๐ก Tips for the Enshrouded Flame Altar
- Level before build area: a bigger build area helps with your base, but only the Flame Level gets you further into the fog.
- Check the boss first: the boss trophy is usually the bottleneck. You farm resources along the way, but the head needs a dedicated fight.
- Don't extinguish it by accident: "Deactivate Altar" puts out the fire. Your buildings stay until the next world reset, then they disappear.
- Skill points: you can reset your skill points at the altar.
- Console: the Flame Altar works the same on PS5, but a PS5 world holds up to 8 online players instead of the 16 on PC. Co-op details are in our co-op and dedicated server guide.
The fact that your base stays permanent inside the build area sets Enshrouded apart from survival games with a building decay mechanic.
๐ Current state and what may change with 1.0
All values apply to the Early Access build with nine levels, introduced with the "Wake of the Water" update (version 0.9, November 2025), and to the state after the "Forging the Path" update of April 21, 2026. Enshrouded 1.0 is scheduled for October 15, 2026, on PC and PS5. In its 1.0 combat preview of September 23, 2026, Keen Games announced a new combat balance with a player level cap of 50, gear up to level 55 and another skill tree reset, so material amounts and Flame Altar values may still change.
โ Frequently Asked Questions about the Enshrouded Flame Altar
How many levels does the Flame Altar have in Enshrouded?
Nine in the current Early Access. Level 9 was added with the "Wake of the Water" update.
What's the difference between Upgrade Altar and Strengthen the Flame?
"Upgrade Altar" only enlarges one build area. "Strengthen the Flame" raises the level for your entire world, meaning Shroud time, passage level and attribute bonus.
How long can I stay in the Shroud?
Five minutes on level 1, then one more minute with each following level, up to 13 minutes on level 9.
Why can't I level up even though I have all the materials?
Most likely you're missing rescued survivors. From level 3 onward, each level requires a minimum number, and level 9 needs 14.
Does my level drop if I extinguish an altar?
No. The level applies to your entire world and, according to the community wiki, never drops, even if all of them are gone.
How many Sparks do I need to reach level 9?
226 Sparks in total, from one Spark for level 2 up to 60 Sparks for level 9.
Checked against Keen Games' official update announcements and established community databases, mainly the English community wiki on wiki.gg (as of July 2026) for amounts and values. As of: October 8, 2026.
