Enshrouded Shroud Adhesive comes from the Shroud Flayer, an enemy in the Nomad Highlands Shroud that you can also grow yourself at the Seedbed. According to the game data, the adhesive goes into 23 recipes, from boots and the Extraordinary Glider to the Shroud Nexus for your altar upgrade.
There's only one material by that name. The database lists no second adhesive item with a similar name, so every recipe on this page means the same drop.

๐บ๏ธ Where Shroud Adhesive comes from: the Shroud Flayer
You can't craft Enshrouded Shroud Adhesive. The database names the Shroud Flayer as its source and the Nomad Highlands Shroud as the first place you'll run into it. Under the enemy group "Fog Creature", it lists the adhesive as a drop from some variants: 100 percent chance, 1 to 3 per kill. Which variants those are, the page doesn't say.
The community wiki puts the Flayer in the Fell faction as a hostile enemy. It places many of them in the Shroud north-west of Umber Hollow, where other Fell enemies roam too. The wiki page is flagged as needing an update, so treat the location as a community note rather than hard data.
One player in the Steam discussions from September 2025 also reports Flayers outside the Shroud, north-east of Brittlewood. Neither database confirms that, so check it yourself. ๐ฑ Farming Enshrouded Shroud Adhesive: the Shroud Flayer Seedling
Instead of hunting in the fog, you can raise Flayers at your base. At the Seedbed, 1 Acidic Mycelium, 1 Shroud Adhesive and 1 Shroud Infused Farm Soil make a Shroud Flayer Seedling. The database says Critter Carapace unlocks the recipe. The seedling only grows in Shroud Infused Farm Soil and turns into a Shroud Flayer that you then defeat.
Shroud Infused Farm Soil is made at the Farmer: 5 Chitin Powder, 10 Shroud Sand and 5 Farm Soil give you 10. The community wiki lists 3 minutes of crafting time for the seedling and a growth time of 0:05 in Shroud Infused Farm Soil, with no unit given. Oddly, the same table also lists times for regular soils, even though the text says only Shroud Infused Farm Soil works.

๐ฅพ Nomad Highlands armor
Ten of the 23 recipes are armor pieces at item level 15. Four pairs of boots also need Fossilized Bone, and our Enshrouded Fossilized Bone guide shows where to find it. According to the database, Flame Level 4 unlocks the Magician Hat and the Mercenary Boots. Each armor piece costs 3 or 4 Shroud Adhesive, and the two Herbalist pieces together take 6.
๐ช Shroud Weaver and ammo
The Shroud Weaver is a staff that the database lists in four variants from level 21 to 46. Each one costs 2 Shroud Adhesive. Only the metals go up with the level. The single biggest sink is the Shroud Beam: 50 Shroud Adhesive for 50 charges, so one adhesive per shot. If the Beam is your main spell, you'll need a steady supply.
๐งฎ Our math: how many Shroud Flayers you need
Upgrading your Flame Altar to Altar Level 4 (build area 160 ร 160 ร 160) takes 5 Shroud Nexus. At 4 adhesive per Nexus, that's 20 Shroud Adhesive, plus 40 Shroud Particles and 50 Mint Mushroom Meat. Add the Extraordinary Glider (15) and both Herbalist pieces (6), and you're at 41 Shroud Adhesive. Almost half of that, 48.8 percent, goes into the altar alone.
With 1 to 3 adhesive per Flayer from the database, those 41 pieces take between 14 and 41 kills, about 21 at an average of 2. That range only holds if the "some variants" in the database mean the Flayer. That's likely, but the page doesn't say so outright.
The seedling deserves a second look. Each one costs 1 Shroud Adhesive and gives you a Flayer worth 1 to 3. Worst case you break even, best case you gain 2, on average 1 per round. Getting 41 Shroud Adhesive from the Seedbed would mean roughly 41 seedlings, so 41 Acidic Mycelium and 41 Shroud Infused Farm Soil as well. Farming at home doesn't replace the trip. It just makes the adhesive renewable.
You can also get the Shroud Nexus without any adhesive. According to the database, the Fell Cyclops, Fell Monstrosity and Fell Sicklescythe each drop one. What the other altar levels cost is in our Enshrouded Flame Altar levels guide.
๐ What changed with version 1.0
The community wiki still lists the Sharpshooter Vest as a recipe with 9 Shroud Adhesive. According to the official 1.0 changelog from Keen Games, though, the Marksman and Sharpshooter sets were turned into loot. That fits the database: the vest is missing there, and the Fowler Trousers with 3 adhesive show up instead.
Older Steam posts list the adhesive as a requirement for raising your Flame Level. That's a mix-up. The adhesive goes into the Shroud Nexus, and the altar uses the Nexus for its build area upgrade, not for the flame itself. The database doesn't list Shroud Adhesive among the materials for "Strengthen the Flame". Patch #1 (version 1.0.1.0) doesn't mention the adhesive either.
