Enshrouded Basalt: Cinder's Cradle Location, Pickaxe and All Recipes
Enshrouded Basalt only exists in Cinder's Cradle, the new biome from version 1.0 in the far north beyond the Veilwater Basin. You need the dark volcanic stone for the Celestium Pickaxe, the stations of the new Ancient Researcher, Ancient building blocks and, ground into dust, for the crops of the new biome.
This guide shows where the stone is, which pickaxe to bring, what it's used for and how much you should gather for each goal. All recipes come from the Enshrouded 1.0 game data, and we added up the amounts ourselves.
๐ Where to find Basalt in Enshrouded
According to the game data database enshrouded.th.gl, Cinder's Cradle is the only source of Enshrouded Basalt. The in-game description calls it dense, dark volcanic stone, harder than common Cinder Rock. The database lists no vendor and no alternative recipe.
Keen Games introduces the region as Cinder's Cradle in the 1.0 changelog, and its dirt is called Cinder's Cradle Dirt. Cinder Rock is found in the same area, the rough, ash-gray standard stone of the biome. Don't mix the two up: Cinder Rock is common, while Enshrouded Basalt is the one everybody needs.
According to the official 1.0.0.0 changelog, Cinder's Cradle has two layers: a lava wasteland with ruins at the bottom and floating islands of the Ancients above it. Neither the changelog nor the database says which layer has more Enshrouded Basalt. The interactive map on th.gl doesn't have its own layer for it yet, so you'll have to search yourself.
๐ฅ Before you farm Enshrouded Basalt in Cinder's Cradle
According to the changelog, a new Flame Level waits before the region, and it raises the number of Flame Altars to 15. Since 1.0 the player level cap is 50, and gear goes up to level 55. The Celestium tools and the ground dust are item level 45 in the database.

โ๏ธ Which pickaxe you need for Enshrouded Basalt
The database doesn't name a minimum pickaxe for Enshrouded Basalt. One thing is clear, though: the Celestium Pickaxe itself costs two Basalt. So the first few must be minable with a weaker pickaxe. Our advice: bring the best one you have.

Two changes from the 1.0 changelog help with mining. Keen reworked the hardness of several minable materials, explicitly including stones for large settlements. ๐งฑ What Enshrouded Basalt is used for
The database lists 44 recipes with Enshrouded Basalt as a direct ingredient. They fall into five groups: tools and a shield at the Blacksmith, stations at the Ancient Researcher, furniture at the Carpenter, building blocks at the Workbench, and soil and dust for farming and alchemy.
Almost all of these recipes also ask for Celestium Bars or Gold Bars. According to the database, you smelt both in the Blast Furnace from ore and Coal. So plan your trips north to pick up ore and Basalt on the same run.

The Celestium Pickaxe has the largest radius of all pickaxes in the database. Since it only costs two Basalt, it's the first sensible goal once you arrive up north.
๐๏ธ Ancient Researcher stations made with Enshrouded Basalt
According to the changelog, 1.0 brings a new survivor to your base who specializes in the knowledge and recipes of the Ancients. In the game data she's the Ancient Researcher. We found no details on where to unlock her in either the changelog or the database. What the other craftspeople need is in our Enshrouded craftspeople guide.

The order is fixed. The Gem Forge needs two Archaic Infusions, and those come from the Infusion Altar. With the forge, you upgrade gems and socket them into weapons right at your base. The changelog confirms that a gem forge can be placed in your base in the late game. According to its description, the Ancient Workbench is just a cosmetic version of the regular Workbench.
๐ช Furniture and decoration
The Carpenter makes 18 pieces of Ancient furniture from Enshrouded Basalt, from the Ancient Stool (4 Basalt) and the Ancient Bed (10) up to the Round Ancient Door and the Large Ancient Temple Bench (20 each). There are also Meteorite Showcases, cupboards, tables and sideboards. Twelve more decorations such as arcs, prayer beacons and temple shelves cost 2 to 10 Basalt each.
๐ง Building blocks at the Workbench
For base building, the blocks are what counts. According to the database, 10 Basalt at the Workbench give you 100 Ancient Circles Blocks, and the same goes for Ancient Dungeon Blocks. The Ancient Stone Block also needs 10 Moonstone, and the Moonstone Block takes 3 Basalt plus 10 Moonstone and 4 Sparkling Dust. More on planning big builds is in our Enshrouded base building guide.
The 1.0 changelog explains why the volcanic stone shows up here: recipes with stone now use the stone type of their biome. Before that, according to Keen, too many recipes depended on stone from the Springlands.
๐ฑ Basalt Dust for farming and alchemy
At the Mill, one Basalt becomes one Basalt Dust. The dust is the bottleneck for the new crops. The Farmer mixes 10 Basalt Dust and 5 Fertilised Farm Soil into 10 Basalt Farm Soil. According to its description, only this soil holds the nutrients that plants from Cinder's Cradle need.
The database lists seedlings and plant pots for five crops of the region, among them Aurora Beans and Thyme. According to the changelog, Thyme got a seedling for the first time with 1.0. How the Seedbed and watering work is explained in our Enshrouded farming guide.
The Workbench also makes Fertile Cinder's Cradle Dirt: one Cinder Rock, one Basalt and 8 Cinder's Cradle Dirt give you 10.
โจ Spells and color palettes
The Alchemist needs Basalt Dust for four spells, at 10, 10, 5 and 3 dust each. Three of them are heals, so healers in co-op should keep their own stock. Four color palettes take one unit each on top of that.
๐ Our math: how much Enshrouded Basalt you need
We added up the amounts from all 37 Blacksmith, Ancient Researcher, Carpenter, Alchemist and decoration recipes. Workbench blocks, soil and dust aren't in this total, because you craft them in whatever amount you like.

What that means in practice: 77 Enshrouded Basalt cover the tools and all three stations. A base made of 1,000 Ancient blocks costs 100 Basalt, and a field with 50 Basalt Farm Soil costs 50 Basalt through the dust. The four Alchemist spells together use 28 dust, so another 28 Basalt.
Our tip from the math: build the Celestium Pickaxe first for 2 Basalt. It makes every later trip to Cinder's Cradle faster, and only after that are stations and furniture worth it. If building is your main goal, plan 10 Basalt per 100 blocks and leave the furniture for later.
