Since September 22, 2026, Dune Awakening has been available for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The biggest patch so far, the Dune Awakening September update (Update 1.5, launched as version 1.5.3.0, Hotfix 1.5.3.1 on September 19), has been live on every platform since September 17, 2026, PC included. This article explains what's really in it, what changes for PC players and where the catches are.
๐ฎ Console Launch: What PS5 and Xbox Players Get
The console version isn't a bare-bones port. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S get the full PC experience, including all content and updates since the PC launch in June 2025. Plus two graphics modes:
- Performance: 60 FPS at dynamic 4K
- Quality: 30 FPS at dynamic 4K; on PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X with a higher native resolution and better visuals
Controls and UI were fully reworked for controllers. In a survival game this complex, with crafting, base building and vehicles, that's no small thing. More on that in our controller guide.
โ ๏ธ Crossplay: The Big Limitation Many Miss
Here's the detail Funcom didn't put front and center, but which is right there in the official announcement:
No crossplay between PC and PS5.
No crossplay between PS5 and Xbox.
Crossplay only between Xbox Series X|S and the Microsoft Store (PC).
In practice, PS5 players currently end up in their own world, separate from PC and Xbox players. The only bridge at launch runs between Xbox and the Microsoft Store, specifically the Microsoft Store version of the game. Funcom doesn't mention Steam anywhere.
That's not the final state, though. At gamescom on August 26, 2026, Funcom officially promised cross-play between PC and consoles, in its own words "cross-play is coming to Dune: Awakening post console launch". Funcom explicitly gives no date, and the console launch announcement from September 22 only says cross-play will be added after launch. The community newsletter "Communinet Signal #21" from October 1, 2026 still lists no set date.
If you're picking a platform for a mixed group today, go by the state as of September 22 and don't wait for the update. The full platform matrix is in our crossplay article.
Xbox players do get a real advantage: the game fully supports Xbox Play Anywhere. Buy once, play on Xbox and on PC via the Microsoft Store with a shared save; according to Funcom, progress also carries over to the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Cloud Gaming. According to the Xbox Store listing, Dune Awakening is also included in Game Pass Premium, Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass (cloud: Premium and Ultimate), and Game Pass members can upgrade to Deluxe or Ultimate at a 20% discount.
๐ Story Finale: Book 1 Complete
The September update brings the conclusion of the main story. Until now, the story had been released in stages:
- Acts 1 and 2: at the PC launch in June 2025
- Chapter 2 (September 2025): Act 3 and the start of Act 4, with Arrakeen, a murder case and political intrigue
- Chapter 3 (February 3, 2026): the end of Act 4, with new locations and one of the biggest twists
- Act 5 (Update 1.5, September 17, 2026): the dramatic finale of Book 1, now playable start to finish
Solo, with friends on a private server or in full multiplayer, the complete Dune Awakening story can be played from beginning to end since September 17.
๐ค New Character System: Characters Instead of Servers
With Update 1.5, Funcom changed the basic structure of the game. Instead of picking a server at launch, you now pick your character and then decide where to play it.
The rules you need to know:
- Single-player characters stay in solo mode only. No transfer possible.
- Multiplayer characters on official servers can move freely between all official servers.
- Transfers to private or self-hosted servers can't be undone. Official characters can move to private and self-hosted servers, but not back. Characters from private servers can move between private servers and to self-hosted servers; characters from self-hosted servers only between self-hosted servers.
- Backed-up bases and vehicles come along on a transfer.
How the move works step by step is covered in our server transfer guide.
๐ก๏ธ New Protection Systems for Vehicles and Bases
Losing vehicles and bases has been one of the biggest frustrations since launch. Funcom added two new systems:
Vehicle Recovery: according to Funcom's announcement at the Update 1.5 launch, destroyed vehicles can be recovered for up to 30 days with the Vehicle Backup Tool, for a Solaris fee and with a durability penalty. The pre-launch announcement still said 72 hours. If a sandworm eats your ornithopter, you get it back.
Base Backup: the game stores up to three complete copies of your base, which you can rebuild later with the Base Reconstruction Tool, according to Funcom even on a different World.
๐๏ธ Landsraad: Missions Instead of Tributes
The Landsraad rework into missions has existed since Chapter 3 (Update 1.3 from February 3, 2026). According to the community wiki awakening.wiki, the Landsraad missions replaced the old kill and delivery tasks back then, and Update 1.3 raised the maximum faction rank to 20. Funcom's announcement "The new Dune: Awakening is here" from September 17, 2026 looks back on the whole first year and sums up the current state: a mission system with 20 ranks that works in both multiplayer and single-player:
- Missions in five categories: Combat, Crafting, Gathering, Exploration and Sabotage
- Completion pays Solaris, XP and contribution points for Atreides or Harkonnen
- Progress through 20 ranks from outsider up to "Atreides Envoy" or "Harkonnen Enforcer"
- Fully playable in PvE, so no PvP is needed to influence the Landsraad anymore
In single-player mode, the system simulates other guilds according to the patch notes, so the competition stays intact. The full system is explained in our Landsraad guide.
โ๏ธ Optional PvP in the Deep Desert
Important for solo players and PvE fans, but not new with 1.5: since Patch 1.3.20.0 on April 28, 2026, the Deep Desert on official Worlds runs as separate PvE and PvP instances. Funcom's 1.5 announcement confirms it: "The Deep Desert runs as both a PvE and a PvP instance on every official World." So you can farm spice in the PvE instance with no player threat, and according to Funcom, Landsraad missions can be done without fighting other players.
The catch: according to the 1.5 announcement, the PvP instance of the Deep Desert gives 2.5x yields for mining and harvesting as a risk incentive. If you're willing to take the risk, you'll farm much more efficiently. How the PvE side works is in our Deep Desert PvE guide.
๐ New Content Since PC Launch: Overview for Console Newcomers
If you're jumping in on console, you get a year of PC content at once. Here's what has been added since June 2025:
New map locations: Smuggler's Run, Blushing Cavern, The Old Quarry, the Ruins of Tsimpo and Wind Pass, all with their own quests.
Six new Imperial Testing Stations with unique boss fights and escalating difficulty. For dungeon drops, the Update 1.5 patch notes say: Grade 5 still drops from difficulty 20 up, but less often; Grade 3 no longer drops above difficulty 20; and Grade 4 becomes rarer from difficulty 27.
Two new weapon classes: the Pyrocket (an incendiary gel launcher) and Dual Blades.
New cosmetics: Atreides, Harkonnen and Landsraad skins for machines, vehicles and weapons. Each school of the Imperium has its own armor sets.
Self-hosted servers: PC players can run free private servers for up to 40 concurrent players per Sietch. Self-hosting is PC-only, but rented private servers are available on every platform according to Funcom.
โ๏ธ What's Next: The Polar Cap Map
Funcom confirmed the next big expansion at the console launch: the Polar Cap map. The new survival map brings new areas, cold-based survival mechanics, its own storyline plus new creatures, craftables and buildables. It's coming as a free update later this year; Funcom hasn't given a specific date.
From September 25 to October 5, the community challenge "El Sayldam: The Rain of Blood" ran; it's over now. Anyone who logs in between September 17 and October 22 also gets the decor collection "Matron's Dรฉcor" with placeable objects for your base.
๐ฐ Prices and Editions
There are three editions: Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate. Deluxe and Ultimate include the season pass, and Ultimate adds more extras. The regular prices were the same on Steam, the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store at console launch, and the launch discount was Steam-only and has ended. What each edition contains is in our editions comparison.
Xbox Game Pass: included since the console launch, and according to Funcom, the upgrade to Deluxe or Ultimate costs Game Pass members 20% less. Prices change, so check discounts and bonuses directly in each store.
๐ก Dune Awakening September Update FAQ
When did the Dune Awakening September update come out?
Update 1.5 has been live on every platform since September 17, 2026, PC included. The regular console release for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S has been out since September 22, 2026; Deluxe and Ultimate Edition pre-order buyers could start on console from September 17 via head start. The update is free for existing PC players.
Is there crossplay between platforms?
Currently only between Xbox Series X|S and the Microsoft Store (PC). There's no crossplay between PC and PS5 or between PS5 and Xbox yet. On August 26, 2026, Funcom promised cross-play between PC and consoles for after the console launch, without a date.
Is Dune Awakening on Game Pass?
Yes, in Xbox Game Pass since the console launch. According to Funcom, members can upgrade to Deluxe or Ultimate at a 20% discount. The game also supports Xbox Play Anywhere.
Do PC players have to pay for Update 1.5?
No. The update is free for everyone who already owns the game.
๐ป What It Means for PC Players
The September update also brings changes for existing PC players, not just console newcomers. The new character system, single-player mode, Vehicle Recovery and the story continuation have been live on every platform since September 17, 2026. PC players don't have to buy anything; the update is free.
What doesn't change: because of the missing crossplay, console newcomers won't land on Steam servers for now; only Xbox and the Microsoft Store version share servers. PC servers may still get busier from returning players. If you farm spice fields in the PvE instance, plan for that.
For more on the console launch, see our PS5 and Xbox launch overview and the single-player guide.
