Dune Awakening crossplay between PC and consoles is officially confirmed, but it isn't in the game yet, and Funcom still hasn't named a date. Funcom announced it at gamescom on August 26, 2026, as a feature that comes "post console launch". Consoles launched on September 22, and as of October 11, 2026, PC and PlayStation 5 players still can't play together.
So the split between platforms is still there. It just isn't permanent anymore. This guide shows what Funcom actually said, which platforms can play together right now and what that means for a mixed group.
๐ฎ What Funcom has officially said about Dune Awakening crossplay
Funcom made the turnaround official at gamescom on August 26, 2026. The announcement on duneawakening.com says: "cross-play is coming to Dune: Awakening post console launch". The next line adds the catch: "we are not ready to share a release date yet, but we will have more information to share as development progresses".
The console launch post from September 22 repeats it: "Cross-play will be added post-launch. We will share more information when ready." The most recent word came in Communinet Signal #21 on October 1, 2026: "We don't have a set date to share just yet on when cross-play will be introduced but know that it is being worked on!"
So crossplay between PC and consoles is a done deal as a feature, with no quarter and no update attached to it. Until it arrives, the rule from the original console announcement still applies: no crossplay between different console platforms and no crossplay between PC and consoles, with one exception. Xbox Series X|S and the Windows PC Store version play together.
That exception comes from Xbox Play Anywhere. Funcom confirms that Dune: Awakening fully supports Play Anywhere, including shared progress between the Xbox console and the Windows PC version. On top of that, the game is on Game Pass, supports Xbox Cloud Gaming and runs on the ROG Xbox Ally handheld. Inside the Microsoft ecosystem you get the whole package. Everyone else stays on their own island until the crossplay update lands.
Before gamescom, Funcom had described crossplay as "technically and operationally complex" and pointed to resources going into the console port and the September update. That position is outdated since August 26. A vague "we'd like to" turned into a firm commitment. The only thing missing is the date.
๐ Timeline: when crossplay changed and what's still open
| Date | What happened | Crossplay status |
|---|---|---|
| until Sept 16, 2026 | Live version 1.4.10.5 from August 12, PC only | No console versions yet |
| Aug 26, 2026 | gamescom announcement | Crossplay confirmed for after the console launch, no date |
| Sept 17, 2026 | Update 1.5 (version 1.5.3.0) goes live on all platforms; Early Access for Deluxe and Ultimate buyers on PS5 and Xbox | No crossplay between PC and console |
| Sept 22, 2026 | Console launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Game Pass, Filmic Archive DLC | No crossplay between PC and console |
| Oct 1, 2026 | Communinet Signal #21 | "being worked on", still no date |
| later, no date | Crossplay update for PC and consoles | Confirmed, date open |
The last row is the whole story. Funcom committed to the feature, not to a time. If you're making a buying decision for yourself or your group, base it on how things work today, not on what comes at some point.
โ ๏ธ The crossplay matrix as of October 2026
This matrix shows the current state, before the announced crossplay update. Every platform "No" is really a "not yet", and it only goes away with an update that has no date. The split between single player and online is the only permanent one. The table is based on the official announcements only; cells without an official statement are marked as such.
| Platform A | Platform B | Can play together? | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Windows PC Store | Yes | Official exception, Xbox Play Anywhere |
| Xbox Series X|S | PS5 | No, not yet | No crossplay at launch, update announced without a date |
| PS5 | PC (any store) | No, not yet | No crossplay at launch, update announced without a date |
| Xbox Series X|S | Steam PC | Not confirmed | The exception only names the Windows PC Store |
| Steam PC | Windows PC Store | Not confirmed | No official statement |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Xbox / Windows PC Store | Yes | Cloud Gaming is part of the Xbox ecosystem |
| ROG Xbox Ally | Xbox / Windows PC Store | Yes | Runs as an Xbox platform |
| Single player | Any online platform | No | Single player characters stay in single player |
๐๏ธ Steam is not the same as the Windows PC Store
Most news posts skip this part. The official exception explicitly names the Windows PC Store, meaning the Microsoft Store version of the game. Steam isn't mentioned anywhere.
We won't claim more than the sources say: there is no official statement on whether Steam players can join Xbox or Windows PC Store players. Read literally, the announcement suggests they can't. That would mean Steam players aren't part of the one crossplay bridge that exists today.
The gamescom post doesn't help here either. It doesn't single out Steam and only talks about crossplay between PC and consoles in general. Until Funcom clarifies it, don't count on it when you buy the game for a specific group.
๐ก What the split means in practice
"No crossplay at launch" sounds like a footnote. In Dune: Awakening it reaches deep into the game, because almost everything runs on shared servers and social systems. Until the crossplay update ships, all of this still applies:
- Separate friend lists: your group only exists inside your platform pool. A friend on PS5 simply won't show up when you look for players on PC.
- Separate guilds: you can't form a mixed guild of PC and PS5 players. If you want to build bases together, agree on a platform first. Our base building guide helps with the rest.
- Separate Landsraad factions: the political endgame lives on the Landsraad missions of whole server populations. PS5 servers run their own Landsraad politics, PC servers theirs. How the system works is in the Landsraad guide.
- Separate Deep Desert economy: spice prices, controlled testing stations and PvP pressure develop differently per platform. The Deep Desert guide still applies, but the competition looks different.
- Separate trading: Exchange listings from the PC pool don't reach you on console. If you're hunting rare Mk6 parts from the weapons guide, you're shopping in a smaller market.
The practical takeaway: if your regular group is mixed, pick one platform before you buy. A character you level on PC won't help you on PS5. Waiting for the crossplay update isn't something you can plan around while there's no date.
๐ฆ Character transfer: what Funcom has confirmed and what it hasn't
There are official statements on moving characters, but only between server types on the same platform. Confirmed: characters from official servers can move to private or self-hosted servers. Funcom's wording is "official server characters can move to private servers (though not back)". The way back is blocked on purpose to protect the official servers. Since Update 1.5, Funcom also says official server characters "can be played on any official server", and backed-up bases and vehicles come with you. The older rule from patch 1.2.40.0, one transfer token with a seven-day wait, hasn't been mentioned by Funcom since.
Single player characters stay in single player mode; details are in our single player guide. If you want to host yourself, see the guide to your own server, and for the move itself the server transfer guide.
What does not exist is any official statement on transferring a character between PC and console. Neither the announcement nor later Funcom posts mention a cross-platform transfer. The only confirmed shared progress runs through Xbox Play Anywhere between Xbox console and Windows PC Store. Everything else is speculation for now. The gamescom post also only talks about crossplay, not about transfers, so a promise of one isn't a promise of the other.
๐ Is the console version still worth it?
Yes, with realistic expectations. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have been live since September 22, Update 1.5 with single player mode has been out on all platforms since September 17, and Xbox players get the game through Game Pass. The paid cosmetic DLC Filmic Archive, with looks from both films, launched alongside it. Which edition gets you what is covered in our Dune Awakening editions guide.
What you don't get is crossplay with PC. For new console players, the crossplay question changes little about the game itself: survival, water management and building your character work the same on every platform. If you're starting fresh, read the water and survival guide first, then the specializations guide and finally the best builds. The only difference is who you play with, not what you do.
โ Frequently asked questions about Dune Awakening crossplay
Can I play with my PS5 friends from PC?
No, not as of October 11, 2026. Funcom has confirmed crossplay between PC and consoles, but explicitly for after the console launch and without a date. Right now, the only bridge is between Xbox and the Windows PC Store, and PlayStation isn't part of it.
Can PS5 and Xbox players play together?
Not right now. The console announcement rules out crossplay between different console platforms, so PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are separate pools for now. The announced crossplay update is supposed to change that later, with no date given.
Does crossplay work with Steam?
There's no official statement. The exception refers word for word to the Windows PC Store, not Steam. Until Funcom clarifies it, don't plan on it.
Can I take my PC character to PS5?
A character transfer between PC and console isn't confirmed anywhere. Only the move from official servers to private or self-hosted servers on the same platform is confirmed, and that move is one-way.
When is crossplay between PC and consoles coming?
There's no date. Funcom confirmed crossplay at gamescom on August 26, 2026, for after the console launch, and said it isn't ready to share a release date. Communinet Signal #21 on October 1, 2026, only says it is being worked on. It isn't tied to any named update.
Was crossplay part of the console launch on September 22?
No. The official wording was "post console launch". Since September 22, the old rules apply, with the single exception between Xbox and the Windows PC Store.
๐ Sources and status
The crossplay promise, console date, Early Access from September 17, Xbox Game Pass and the Filmic Archive DLC come from the official gamescom announcement of August 26, 2026, on duneawakening.com.
The September 17 release of Update 1.5 is documented in the official "Console Release Patch Notes". The crossplay matrix is based on the original console announcement "Console Date and Single-Player Announced". The latest crossplay statement comes from Communinet Signal #21 (October 1, 2026); hotfixes 1.5.3.6 (October 6) and 1.5.3.7 (October 9) don't touch crossplay either. There is still no official statement on Steam or on a PC-to-console character transfer, so both are marked as unresolved here.
As of October 11, 2026: Update 1.5, latest live hotfix 1.5.3.7 (October 9, 2026). Crossplay between PC and consoles is confirmed but not available and has no date. Sources: official Funcom news posts and patch notes on duneawakening.com. We'll update this article as soon as Funcom names a date.
