Dune Awakening single player has been live on all platforms since Update 1.5 on September 17, 2026, PC included. The regular console launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S followed on September 22, 2026. You play Arrakis completely alone: every NPC is there, other players are not. Owners of the Deluxe or Ultimate Edition on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S got in early, on September 17.
This guide sums up what Funcom has officially confirmed so far. The sources are the console announcement, the developer post from June 24, 2026, the patch notes for Public Test Client 1.5.1.0 (August 13, 2026) and the notes for Update 1.5 (September 17, 2026) plus its hotfixes up to 1.5.3.7. Anything those sources don't cover is clearly marked as open.
Ever since the June 2025 launch, a solo mode was the most requested feature in the community. The next section explains why forced multiplayer held so many players back.
Why was forced multiplayer such a problem?
Anyone who has played Dune Awakening knows the feeling. The game looks great and Arrakis feels real, but the moment you wanted to farm spice seriously, multiplayer got in the way. Spice is the most important resource in the game. You need it for endgame gear, the Landsraad and plenty of crafting recipes.
The catch: the biggest spice deposits sit in the Deep Desert. Until the end of April 2026, much of it was open PvP territory. Farm there alone and sooner or later someone jumped you. Separate PvE and PvP instances only arrived with patch 1.3.20.0 on April 28, 2026. Even without the PvP risk, the next problem was waiting: the Sandcrawler.
Running a Sandcrawler alone is close to impossible. You need at least one friend with a Carrier, because when the worm shows up, someone has to lift the crawler while the other one runs. It has been one of the most discussed topics on Steam since launch, and the community answer was blunt: "You don't. To actually mine spice you need at least 1 friend with a carrier." No guild, no luck.
That is exactly the gap single player is meant to close. The real question is whether it does.
What single-player mode gives you
These points are officially confirmed, partly in the console announcement and partly in the 1.5.1.0 and Update 1.5 patch notes:
No other players. You have Arrakis to yourself. All NPCs are there, but no raids, no PvP you didn't ask for and no competition for resources.
The Deep Desert is fully available, with all of its content and challenges. The key difference from multiplayer: the map is not reset and your buildings are not removed. That is a big deal for solo players who kept losing their bases to the weekly desert wipe.
Three difficulty presets, or full manual control over individual sliders such as enemy strength, XP rate and gathering speed. If you only want the story, turn difficulty down. If you want a real fight, turn it up.
๐๏ธ All single-player settings at a glance
In solo you control almost every part of the game, either through difficulty presets or through individual sliders in four categories (Harvesting, Combat, Survival, Persistence). You can change the settings at any time, so you don't have to get everything right on day one. Funcom confirmed these sliders for launch:
| Setting | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Resource gathering rate | How much you get per harvest |
| Crafting and building costs | Material cost of recipes and structures |
| Loot and resource respawn | How fast loot and deposits come back |
| XP gain | Experience from different sources |
| Damage, enemy health and respawn | Damage dealt, enemy toughness and how fast enemies return |
| Item durability | How fast your gear wears out |
| Dehydration, sun and heat | How hard the desert pushes your survival meters |
| Sandstorms and sandworms | Can be switched off completely |
| Item loss on death | What you lose, including death by sandworm |
| Building restrictions and stability | Build zones, stability and sub-fief limits |
The most important slider for frustrated solo players: sandstorms and sandworms can be disabled entirely. If you want to enjoy the story or build in peace, you just switch off the biggest threat in the desert. That also takes the pressure off spice farming, because you set the gathering rate yourself and can remove the worm from the equation. A slider-by-slider breakdown is in our guide to the single-player settings.
โ๏ธ How solo mode works under the hood
Dune Awakening was built as a server-authoritative online game with a PostgreSQL database. For solo, Funcom moved persistence to a local, serverless SQLite setup and rebuilt the game from server-driven to client-driven: combat, vehicle simulation and loading the huge maps now run on your own machine. That costs more local performance, so Funcom had to optimize heavily. The performance and UI improvements that came out of this work also benefit multiplayer.
The social hubs stay in: Arrakeen and Harko Village can still be visited. The situation at the market has changed since June.
In the developer post from June 24, 2026, Funcom said the Exchange would be gone in solo. The Update 1.5 patch notes say the opposite: "The Exchange now acts as a vendor with a large selection of items." Player-to-player trading is gone, access to the goods is not. According to Funcom, the sliders are also available on self-hosted servers; on rented private servers, which options you get depends on your provider. Funcom hasn't confirmed whether the vendor Exchange and the simulated Landsraad also run on self-hosted servers.
The big open question: spice and the Sandcrawler in solo
What Funcom hasn't answered in detail: how does spice farming work alone? In multiplayer you often need a Carrier pilot when the sandworm shows up. Alone that is a real problem. The crawler is too slow to escape, and you can't drive the crawler and fly the Carrier at the same time.
There are three ways Funcom could have handled it:
- No reset as the fix: if the map isn't wiped in solo, the time pressure is gone and spice farming gets more relaxed.
- Adjusted mechanics: solo might run the crawler differently, for example with NPC escorts.
- Higher gathering rates: with adjustable rates you simply get more spice per field and need the crawler less often.
As of October 2026: Funcom still hasn't announced a dedicated solo crawler mechanic. Neither the console announcement nor the patch notes up to Hotfix 1.5.3.7 mention one. Two confirmed changes do take most of the sting out of the problem.
First, sandworm spawns can be disabled in solo, and you set the gathering rate yourself. That turns the crawler into a convenience instead of a requirement. Second, Update 1.5 removes Spice Melange from the building cost of several endgame placeables, which wipes out the biggest melange sink for solo players.
The Landsraad in single player: can you win it?
The Landsraad is the political endgame of Dune Awakening, and its missions also feed the specializations. In solo mode, the game simulates other guilds. According to the Update 1.5 patch notes, the Landsraad simulates other guilds to create dynamic, believable competition that moves forward even without player involvement, with cycles especially adapted to the single-player experience.
What Funcom sums up about the Landsraad in the announcement "The New Dune: Awakening Is Here" (September 17, 2026). The announcement looks back on the whole first year; according to the community wiki awakening.wiki, the switch to missions already came with Chapter 3 (Update 1.3, February 3, 2026):
- The Landsraad is a mission-driven framework that, according to Funcom, works equally well for multiplayer PvE and single player.
- You progress through twenty ranks, from outsider to Atreides Envoy or Harkonnen Enforcer, and unlock rewards along the way.
Can you win it? That isn't officially settled. What is certain: the missions, the ranks and their rewards are all available solo. Whether you can win a weekly vote against the simulated guilds and pick a decree like a winning guild in multiplayer is stated neither in the patch notes nor in Funcom's announcement. There is also no information on how long the adapted solo cycles are. How the weekly win works in multiplayer is covered in our Landsraad guide.
Character rules you need to know
Update 1.5 changed the character system. Instead of servers, characters are now the center. The main menu shows all your characters, and you decide where to play each one.
The rules:
- Single-player characters stay in single-player mode only. No transfer to multiplayer or private servers.
- Multiplayer characters on official servers can move freely between all official servers.
- Moving to a private or self-hosted server is possible, but permanent. Once you move a character from an official server to a private or self-hosted one, it can't go back. Funcom says this protects the integrity of the official servers.
- Bases and vehicles you have backed up come with you.
So if you have a strong multiplayer character, think twice before moving it to a private server.
The full story, start to finish
For many players this is the real reason to start. Since Update 1.5 on September 17, 2026, Book 1 can be played completely for the first time, the whole main story from beginning to end:
- Launch content (June 2025): arrival on Arrakis, first faction contacts, surviving the desert.
- Chapter 2 (September 2025): Arrakeen, an unsolved murder, political intrigue and characters who hide more than they show.
- Chapter 3 (February 2026): new locations and, according to Funcom, one of the most memorable story moments so far.
- Finale (Update 1.5, September 17, 2026): the last part closes Book 1, playable from start to the end for the first time.
If raids, guild duties or the chaos of a live server kept interrupting your story in multiplayer, solo finally lets you play it at your own pace.
Community tricks: resetting sandworm aggro as a solo player
These tricks circulate in Dune Awakening Discords and on the Steam forums, and they matter most for solo players. Important: they are community reports, not values confirmed by Funcom. Details and numbers can change with patches and depend on the situation.
The basis for all of them: the sandworm reacts to vibrations. Compactors, vehicles on open sand, sprinting and shields all create vibrations. The higher the vibration meter, the closer the worm. When the meter turns red, the worm surfaces. What many players don't know: you can reset the aggro.
Trick 1: the ornithopter reset (the most reliable method, according to the community):
- Lift the crawler with the Carrier and climb well above the sand.
- Wait until the vibration meter empties.
- Set the crawler down again and keep farming.
This is said to reset the worm aggro completely. Steam community reports say you can farm large amounts of spice solo this way in a short time. The key point: the Sandcrawler itself creates very little vibration, unlike a compactor. If you also unlock the matching Sandcrawler upgrades and wear Softstep Boots, the community says you get even more time before the next reset.
Trick 2: Suspensor Pad (Planetologist skill tree):
This ability deploys a pad that launches you and your allies into the air. The important effect: once you leave the sand, the worm aggro is said to reset. The community version of the trick is to wait until the worm is almost on you, then use the pad, and the worm turns away. Cooldown, stamina cost and duration can change with patches, so check them in game.
Whether this also works with the Sandcrawler isn't clearly confirmed, because you would have to get out of the crawler first. Possible in theory, risky in practice: you stand unprotected on the sand for a moment while the worm is still close.
Trick 3: Thumper as a decoy (early game, use with care):
Place a Thumper far from the spice field and the worm follows the vibrations there. That buys you a short window to harvest before it comes back. One warning from the community: Thumper aggro is tied to the player who placed it. Move too far away from the Thumper and the worm retargets you directly. That makes the Thumper a risky decoy that fits early-game situations best. Later on, tricks 1 and 2 are far more reliable.
Whether all three tricks work the same way in single player isn't officially confirmed.
๐๏ธ Update 1.5: what changes for solo players
Single player isn't a separate download. It is part of Update 1.5. The solo features were tested from August 13, 2026 in Public Test Client 1.5.1.0 and have been on all live servers since September 17, 2026 with version 1.5.3.0. The hotfixes since then, up to 1.5.3.7 on October 9, 2026, mainly fix bugs. One of them is solo-specific: in single player, the ornithopter no longer spawns in the air instead of on the ground.
This table shows how Dune Awakening single player differs from playing on the official multiplayer servers:
| Topic | Multiplayer (official servers) | Single player |
|---|---|---|
| Playing alone | possible, but on an official server with other players | true solo mode without other players |
| Deep Desert | separate PvE and PvP instances (since patch 1.3.20.0) | fully available, no other players |
| Map reset | regular desert reset, structures disappear | no reset, structures stay; the Coriolis Storm no longer kills instantly and doesn't wipe the Deep Desert |
| Difficulty | fixed | three presets or free sliders |
| Sandstorms and sandworms | always active | can be switched off |
| Landsraad | real players and guilds | simulated guilds |
| Exchange | player marketplace | a vendor with a large selection |
| Character transfer | free between official servers, to private servers only one way | solo characters stay in solo |
The most useful change for solo players isn't in the mode itself but in the balance: Update 1.5 removes Spice Melange from the building cost of several endgame placeables, including the Advanced Survival Fabricator and the Medium Chemical Refinery. That removes the resource wall where solo players used to get stuck before the endgame. Once you build up, our base building guide covers location, power and water.
When you can start
On PC, Update 1.5 with single player has been live since September 17, 2026. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Deluxe and Ultimate owners have played since September 17 as well, and the regular console launch followed on September 22, 2026.
On PC you can play solo with a gamepad, which many players find more comfortable than mouse and keyboard, especially when flying the ornithopter.
Still open: Funcom hasn't announced a dedicated Sandcrawler mechanic for solo, hasn't published hardware requirements for the locally computed game and hasn't said whether you can win weekly votes and decrees against the simulated guilds as a solo player. We will add these points once Funcom confirms them.
โ Frequently asked questions about Dune Awakening single player
When did Dune Awakening single player come out?
It has been live on all platforms, PC included, since September 17, 2026 with Update 1.5. The regular console launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S followed on September 22, 2026.
Does the map reset in single player?
No. In solo mode the map is not reset and your buildings are not removed, unlike multiplayer with its desert reset.
Can I move a solo character to multiplayer?
No. Single-player characters stay in single-player mode. Moving them to multiplayer or a private server is not possible.
Does the Landsraad work in single player?
Yes. According to the Update 1.5 patch notes, the game simulates other guilds so the faction competition keeps moving without other players. Missions, the twenty ranks and their rewards are available solo. Funcom hasn't confirmed whether you can win a weekly vote and pick a decree on your own.
Can you play Dune Awakening solo without a group?
Yes. In solo mode there are no other players on the map, the Deep Desert has no PvP and the map isn't reset. The group requirement for spice and the Sandcrawler is gone.
Is single player free?
Yes. The mode is part of the base game through Update 1.5 and costs nothing extra on any platform.
Is the Exchange still there in single player?
Yes, but it works differently. According to the Update 1.5 patch notes, the Exchange becomes a vendor with a large selection of items in solo. Trading between players is gone.
Is now a good time to start?
If you never played Dune Awakening because you were waiting for a solo mode: yes, now is the time. Since Update 1.5 the game comes with a year of content, the complete Book 1 story and the new solo mode. It is the best version of the game so far.
If you already play multiplayer with a good guild, not much changes for you. You get the option of a separate solo character, and your multiplayer character stays as it is.
If you played alone and hit the multiplayer wall, this is what you were waiting for. Update 1.5 removes two spice hurdles at once: sandworms you can switch off and melange-free building costs. Only the Sandcrawler itself still has no dedicated solo solution.
