Dune Awakening Controller Guide: PC, Steam Deck and Console

Dune Awakening controller support already exists on PC: gamepads are recognized natively, there's a full layout for on foot, ground vehicles and the ornithopter, and Update 1.5, live since September 17, 2026, added dedicated aim assist settings for controllers for the first time according to the official patch notes.

The console version for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S ran in early access for Deluxe and Ultimate owners from September 17 and has been out for everyone since September 22, 2026, with a UI and controls fully adapted for console plus haptic feedback.

That answers the main question, but not the interesting one. In a survival MMO with a building tool, radial menus, vehicles and PvP zones, there's a big gap between "recognized" and "plays well". This guide separates what Funcom has officially confirmed, what's in the patch notes and what's purely player observation.

๐ŸŽฎ Dune Awakening Controller on PC: What Works Today

The game isn't limited to mouse and keyboard on PC. A connected gamepad is detected, the UI switches to controller button prompts, and every core action (moving, fighting, climbing, gathering, driving, flying) is mapped to the pad. What was missing before Update 1.5 was polish in the places where the game differs from a classic shooter.

That's exactly where Update 1.5 comes in. Funcom tested it from August 13, 2026 as patch 1.5.1.0 on the Public Test Client. Since September 17, 2026, it's been live as version 1.5.3.0, and the patch notes read like a list of fixes for the previous gamepad implementation.

The final 1.5.3.0 notes include, word for word, "Improvements to UI, gamepad support and rumble haptics", "Added full Dpad support", "Removed acceleration from the virtual cursor to improve its responsiveness", "Increased the map scroll speed when using a controller" as well as changed defaults for the radial wheel.

For PC players this is more than cosmetic. Full D-pad support and a cursor without acceleration are the building blocks that keep inventory and base management from feeling sluggish on a pad. The virtual cursor is why menus were considered the weakest part of the Dune Awakening controller experience: it replaces the mouse on a pad, and an acceleration curve makes clicking small fields unpleasant.

๐ŸŽฏ Aim Assist and PvP: The Touchiest Point

The most interesting line in the patch is a different one: "Added aim assist settings for the controller experience." The 1.5.1.0 test notes still said "Worked on providing aim assist settings"; with Update 1.5, the settings are in the game. The notes also mention "settings for toggling Melee Proximity Auto Lock and Melee Target Mouse Aim Selection".

This is touchy because Dune Awakening isn't a pure PvE experience. In the Deep Desert, every official World runs a PvP instance alongside the PvE one, where players fight each other in the open, and aim assist on a pad is traditionally what sparks balance debates in exactly those zones. How the mechanics work there is covered in detail in our ground PvP guide.

Honesty matters more than a tidy answer here: as of this writing, Funcom hasn't said whether aim assist is reduced, disabled or unchanged in PvP zones. The patch notes only talk about settings, not a zone-dependent rule. If you read that aim assist is off in PvP, that's an unconfirmed claim, and we're flagging it as open.

๐Ÿ•น๏ธ The Dune Awakening Controller Layout

Funcom doesn't publish an official button map for Dune Awakening. The overview below comes from editorial control guides and matches player reports, so it's not an official source and may have shifted with Update 1.5. It shows the Xbox layout; on a DualSense, A/B/X/Y map to Cross/Circle/Square/Triangle.

SituationButtonAction
On footLT / RTAim / attack or use
On footLB / RBAbility 1 and ability 2
On footA / BJump and climb / dodge
On footX / YInteract and reload / weapon wheel
Ground vehicleRT / LTAccelerate and brake
Ground vehicleLeft stickSteer
OrnithopterRT / LTAscend and descend
OrnithopterLeft / right stickForward thrust / pitch and yaw

The ornithopter is where the pad shines most: two analog axes plus analog triggers steer an aircraft more finely than four digital keys. If you don't have yours yet, see our guide on how to unlock and build an ornithopter. Building, on the other hand, remains mouse territory, because placing and rotating pieces calls for free pointing.

If your gamepad isn't detected at all, the game is rarely the culprit. Usually it's a conflict with Steam Input, a flaky Bluetooth connection or a pending restart after an update. A cable instead of wireless and deliberately turning Steam Input on or off fixes most cases. These are community experiences, not official troubleshooting docs.

๐Ÿ“Š Steam Deck: Verified Doesn't Mean Smooth

On Steam Deck, Dune Awakening carries Valve's "Steam Deck Verified" badge. That's the good news, and the point where it's worth looking closer.

The handheld-focused site Steam Deck HQ came to a more sober result in hands-on testing: 30 frames per second hold in quiet areas and interiors, near large bases with several Pentashields the frame rate repeatedly drops below 20, frame times are uneven, and video memory use goes past four gigabytes. That already requires the "Performance" or "Ultra Performance" upscaling presets. This is an editorial measurement, not a manufacturer spec.

In practice: calm exploring, gathering and base work are doable on the Deck, endgame fights with tight timing windows are not.

The 1.5.1.0 test notes promised "major performance changes coinciding with the console launch" with improvements to streaming, rendering, memory, UI and physics. Whether the Deck measurably benefits still needs independent testing since the September 17, 2026 launch. ๐Ÿ“… Console Launch on September 22, 2026

Since September 22, 2026, Dune Awakening has been available for PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S. Deluxe and Ultimate Edition buyers played in early access from September 17. Single-player mode has been available on every platform with Update 1.5 since September 17, 2026.

According to Funcom, the UI and controls are fully adapted for console, plus haptic feedback like the sandworm's rumble in your controller. On Xbox, the game launched in Game Pass, supports Xbox Play Anywhere with shared progress and also runs via Xbox Cloud Gaming and on the ROG Xbox Ally.

On the tech side, Funcom marketing head Erling Ellingsen gave concrete numbers on the PlayStation Blog, and they're the most interesting data point for hardware fans: on the base PS5, Performance mode hits 60 frames per second with frame generation; on PS5 Pro, it hits the same 60 without frame generation. Quality mode runs at 30 on both, and both render at upscaled 4K.

In the console launch announcement from September 22, Funcom lists dynamic 4K for both modes: Performance at 60 and Quality at 30 frames per second. On PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X, Quality mode offers a higher native resolution and better visuals. Funcom hasn't published specific native resolutions so far.

The console version was first playable in public at gamescom in Cologne from August 26 to 30, 2026, in Hall 6, together with single-player mode.

โš ๏ธ Crossplay and Character Transfers: The Letdown

Time to hit the brakes. For the console launch, Funcom stated explicitly that there's no crossplay between different console platforms and none between PC and consoles, with one single exception between Xbox and the Windows PC Store. A character transfer between PC and console hasn't been confirmed anywhere. The only official promise is moving from official to private or self-hosted servers within one platform, and that's a one-way street.

According to Funcom's announcement from September 22, cross-play is meant to be added after launch, with no date. The full matrix of who can play with whom is in our crossplay guide, and the rest of the launch details are in our PS5 and Xbox launch overview.

๐Ÿ’ก Dune Awakening Controller FAQ

Does Dune Awakening support a controller natively on PC?

Yes. Gamepads are recognized without extra software, the button prompts switch over, and there's a layout for on foot, ground vehicles and the ornithopter. According to the patch notes, Update 1.5 added full D-pad support and rumble haptics, among other things.

Is there aim assist for controller players?

Yes. With Update 1.5, Funcom added aim assist settings for controllers plus toggleable melee target lock options, according to the official patch notes. Whether and how strongly these assists apply in PvP zones hasn't been published. That point is open.

What works worse on a pad than on mouse and keyboard?

Mainly building and menu work, because both need free pointing and run through a virtual cursor on a pad. Driving and especially flying the ornithopter benefit from the analog sticks and triggers.

Does the game run well on Steam Deck?

Valve rates it "Steam Deck Verified". A hands-on test by Steam Deck HQ reports drops below 20 frames per second near large bases and uneven frame times despite a nominal 30. It's fine for relaxed play, less so for endgame fights.

When did the console version launch, and on which devices?

Regular release was September 22, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, on Xbox straight into Game Pass. Deluxe and Ultimate Edition buyers played in early access from September 17. There's also a physical disc version for PlayStation 5.

Can I take my PC character to console?

No, there's no confirmation for that. Shared progress is only promised within the Microsoft ecosystem via Xbox Play Anywhere, meaning between Xbox console and the Windows PC Store.
