Dune Awakening Mods: What Funcom Allows and What It Doesn't

Official Dune Awakening mods don't exist: Funcom offers neither a Steam Workshop nor a mod kit. What you can officially change are settings, in single-player, on rented private servers and on self-hosted worlds. New since Hotfix 1.5.3.6: on Steam, the game launches without BattlEye for solo play and for private servers that don't require it.

This guide separates what Funcom documents, what the community does on its own, and where third-party files can get you into trouble.

๐Ÿงฉ No Workshop, No Mod Kit: Where Funcom Stands

The Steam page for Dune Awakening has no Workshop tab at all. The Community hub shows discussions, screenshots, guides and reviews, but no Workshop content. Hotfixes 1.5.3.1 through 1.5.3.7 and the Public Test Client 1.5.15.0 don't mention mods or modding once.

The only solid statement on the topic predates launch. In February 2025, Game Director Joel Bylos told Wccftech in a Q&A about privately hosted servers: "What we don't want to do is release our server code to people". In the same breath, he mentioned letting players speed up progression and change variables on a map.

That's exactly how it played out. Funcom hands out values, not tools. Even when you self-host, you get a ready-made Battlegroup as a virtual machine, not open server code to rebuild.

What About Nexus Mods?

Nexus Mods has its own section for the game with 55 entries (as of October 9, 2026). These are community files without any approval from Funcom. PCGamesN describes the existing Dune Awakening mods as mostly visual filters and performance tweaks. We haven't tested individual files, so we don't name any here.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ New: Launching Without BattlEye Since Hotfix 1.5.3.6

Hotfix 1.5.3.6 on October 6, 2026 added the option to launch the game on Steam without BattlEye installed or enabled. According to the patch notes, this applies to single-player mode and to private and self-hosted servers that don't require the anti-cheat.

A first attempt with Hotfix 1.5.3.1 on September 19 failed. That entry is struck through in the patch notes because it caused BattlEye errors in multiplayer for some players.

Three points from the official notes matter in practice:

  • BattlEye remains mandatory on every multiplayer server that has BattlEye enabled.
  • If you try to join such a server without BattlEye, you get an error message.
  • According to the notes for test build 1.5.15.0, which isn't live yet, servers with BattlEye enabled won't even show up in the server browser for players running without it.

What this means for Dune Awakening mods: Funcom doesn't tie the option to mods and doesn't mention them in this context. It does remove a technical hurdle for local tweaks in solo play. Anything you add runs unsupported, though. If something breaks, Funcom won't help you. Nothing changes on official servers.

๐ŸŽ›๏ธ Official Option 1: Single-Player Settings

The single-player mode added in Update 1.5 is the easiest "mod" without a mod. Gathering rate, XP, sandworm, sandstorms, base decay and more are set right in the game, and you can change them at any time. What each slider does is covered in our guide to the single-player settings, and the basics are in the single-player guide.

A detail few players know: on PC, your solo values are stored in a file called ServerCustomSettings.ini. Funcom gives the path in its Known Issues list (updated September 28, 2026):

%localappdata%\DuneSandbox\Local\DuneSandbox\Saved\Config\Windows\

The reason is a known bug: custom single-player settings don't sync between devices. On another PC, a disabled sandworm or building stability can switch back on, and Funcom warns this can cause permanent progress loss. The official workaround is to copy this file to the other device. Back it up anyway before you touch anything.

Two more points from the same list: some story areas temporarily override your settings. If you get stuck in a mission, reset the values to default and restart. And hiding the HUD can soft-lock you, so Funcom advises avoiding that feature until it's fixed.

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Official Option 2: Rent a Private Server

Funcom's own private server page lists five providers: Nitrado, GPORTAL, xREALM, 4NetPlayers and BisectHosting. The providers set the prices and handle support. A password keeps strangers out.

According to Funcom, you can adjust six areas:

  • Security zones: PvP off, zones only or everywhere, plus damage multipliers.
  • Gathering and crafting: yield, respawn speed, building and crafting costs, crafting time, base fuel efficiency, inventory size.
  • Combat and progression: NPC health, damage and respawn, shield absorption, stamina use, durability, XP and Intel points.
  • Survival: heat, dehydration, sandstorms, sandworms and what you drop on death.
  • Landsraad: contributions, specialization XP, faction reputation and the reroll limit for decrees.
  • Building: fief limit, building piece limit, no-build zones, infinite stability and the cooldown for sub-fief backups.

One catch: all private servers belong to a World that shares social hubs and the Deep Desert with other private servers. You're only fully on your own when you self-host.

๐Ÿ”ง Official Option 3: A Self-Hosted World With ini Files

When you self-host Dune Awakening, you change the exposed values through ini files inside the virtual machine. Hotfix 1.5.3.1 added the new UserServerCustomSettings.ini for this. A bug where values from ServerCustomSettings.ini didn't apply on self-hosted servers was fixed in Hotfix 1.5.3.4. Every change requires a Battlegroup restart.

Test build 1.5.15.0 adds some guidance: the game will tell you when a value only takes effect after rejoining or restarting, and it warns about the risks of extreme values. Custom server settings will also cover stamina use while climbing for the first time. The full setup, including Hyper-V and ports, is in our self-hosted server guide.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Which Option Fits Your Goal?

You want to โ€ฆBest optionEffort
grind less on your ownSingle-player sliderslow
build in peace without the sandwormSingle-player or your own serverlow to high
play with friends under your own rulesRent a private servermedium, ongoing cost
have full control over your worldSelf-hostinghigh (Windows Pro, Hyper-V, lots of RAM)
use visual filters or performance tweaksSolo without BattlEye only, at your own riskdepends on the file
use third-party files on official serversnot at allโ€“

Our take: if you're looking for Dune Awakening mods because the grind feels too slow, the official settings almost always solve it. They cover gathering rate, XP and the sandworm, which are exactly the things people mod in other survival games.

โš ๏ธ Pitfalls With Third-Party Software

Not every problem comes from mods. Sometimes an overlay is enough. Funcom's Known Issues list includes a crash involving NVIDIA DLSS and Overwolf. The official fix: turn off DLSS in the graphics settings or close Overwolf.

If the game already stutters without any extra files, start with our tips on FPS drops and shader stutter. A visual filter won't make a stuttering game smoother.

And if you're leveling a solo character with mods, keep this in mind: single-player characters can't be transferred to servers. For multiplayer plans, private servers or self-hosting are the cleaner route. The transfer rules are in our server transfer guide.

๐Ÿ’ก Dune Awakening Mods FAQ

Does Dune Awakening officially support mods?

No. Funcom hasn't released a mod kit or a Steam Workshop. Officially, you can only change the exposed settings in single-player, on private servers and on self-hosted worlds.

Can I play Dune Awakening without BattlEye?

Yes, on Steam since Hotfix 1.5.3.6: in single-player mode and on private or self-hosted servers that don't require BattlEye. Official multiplayer servers still require it.

Are there Dune Awakening mods on PS5 or Xbox?

No. According to the patch notes, the BattlEye option only applies to the Steam version. On console, you're limited to the official settings, such as the single-player sliders.

Where are the single-player settings stored on PC?

According to Funcom, in ServerCustomSettings.ini under %localappdata%\DuneSandbox\Local\DuneSandbox\Saved\Config\Windows\. Copy the file if you continue playing on a second device.

Can I raise XP and gathering rates without a mod?

Yes. Single-player mode has sliders for both, and on private servers XP and gathering yield are among the exposed settings.

Is a Steam Workshop coming?

Nothing has been announced. Until Funcom says otherwise, any claim about it is speculation.
