Warframe Tau: Everything About the Big Update and the Noir Warframe Brysko
Warframe Tau is the big update Digital Extremes announced at TennoCon 2026, due later in 2026. For the first time in the game's history, you leave the Origin System and travel to Tau, a region orbiting a binary star. The first location is Fornax, a lawless Sentient ring city under constant, madness-inducing black rain. Before that, Update 44 “Iceblade of Narin” arrived on September 23, 2026, and Epoch Operation: Taubound has been running since October 15 as the lead-in.
For Tenno, this is a big moment. Tau has been part of the lore for years: the Sentients come from there, after being sent to terraform the system. Nobody could set foot in it until now. Here's what's confirmed and what comes when.
🌌 What Warframe Tau brings
The new system starts in Fornax. Digital Extremes describes it as a lawless ring city full of addicts and thugs, ruined by criminality and corruption, where black rain falls without pause. A casino sits at its heart. Warframe hasn't had a setting this bleak before.
Confirmed so far:
- The Tau system itself: a new region of space around a binary star, beyond the boundaries of the Origin System.
- Fornax as the first explorable location.
- Fornax Drowners: a new faction of Sentient enemies.
- The Hunra: per Digital Extremes, a brutal kingpin who controls the many rackets in Fornax. Whether he appears as a boss fight hasn't been confirmed.
- Portau: Warframe's first original card game, with the suits Blooms, Cores, Moons and Suns.
A full card game is a notable extra. Warframe already has Komi as a board game in the Orbiter, but Portau gets its own rules and its own name. If side activities like that hook you, you'll probably spend more time with it than with some of the main content.
🕵️ Brysko: the noir Warframe
The new Warframe in the update is called Brysko. Digital Extremes calls him a noir-inspired Warframe working with Albrecht Entrati to infiltrate the Sentient criminal underworld. He's silent to the world, but an inner monologue reveals his thoughts, so the Warframe comments on things while you play.
His gear:
| Weapon | Type |
|---|---|
| Corecracker | Exalted Pistol |
| Rain and Shine | Fist weapons |
An Exalted Weapon is summoned through an ability and has its own mod configuration. If you've played Excalibur or Mesa, you know the idea. How to spread mods sensibly is covered in our mod capacity guide for beginners.
❄️ Before Tau: Update 44 “Iceblade of Narin”
Before Tau, a standalone update arrived on September 23, 2026 with Update 44. Announced at TennoCon were:
- The 66th Warframe, now known as Narin.
- Banshee Deluxe and a rework: her first Deluxe Collection since 2016. A rework usually means noticeable ability changes, not just number tweaks.
- Qorvex Deluxe, inspired by gothic architecture.
- Citrine Prime Access.
For Banshee players, that was the real news. What actually changed with Update 44 is in our Banshee rework breakdown. On October 7, Update 44.1 followed with the mode The Icebind.
📅 The roadmap at a glance
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| September 4, 2026 | Devstream with more details (done) |
| September 23, 2026 | Update 44 “Iceblade of Narin” (released), Update 44.1 “The Icebind” on October 7 |
| October 15 to November 17, 2026 | Epoch Operation: Taubound and the Tau Prologue quest |
| Later in 2026 | Warframe: Tau |
There's no exact date for Tau yet. “Later this year” is the official word. The Taubound announcement doesn't give a date for the big update either. Everything about the operation is in our Warframe Taubound guide.
🎯 What to do until then
Updates of this size usually expect an advanced account. If you're not there yet, you have time now:
- Finish the star chart. New content almost always hangs off nodes far along the chart.
- Unlock the Steel Path if you haven't yet. How is in our Steel Path beginner's guide.
- Collect Incarnon Genesis adapters to upgrade weapons you already own instead of farming new ones. Details in our Incarnon Genesis guide.
- Build up platinum for the slots you'll need for a new Warframe plus two weapons. Methods in our Warframe platinum farming guide.
- Newer players are best off working through the best Warframes for beginners first.
📖 Why Tau matters so much for the story
If you're new, the excitement might not make sense right away. Quick context: the Orokin once sent the Sentients to Tau to make the system habitable. The Sentients finished the job, then came back as enemies after turning on their creators. Tau is the origin of one of the game's central factions and for years existed only in the story.
That's why Fornax is more than a backdrop. It shows what actually became of the terraforming mission. The Fornax Drowners as a new Sentient faction fit the picture: the Sentients there have apparently gone their own way in the meantime.
For actual play, that mostly means new enemies with likely new resistances. If you rely on a single damage type, now's the time to build a second option.
❓ What's still open
So you know where the solid information ends:
- No release date for Tau, only “later this year.”
- No details on Brysko's abilities. So far we only know his two weapons and the narrator concept.
- No details on movement or mission types in the Tau system.
- No details on requirements. What progress you need to reach Tau at all hasn't been said.
Any specific numbers or dates about Warframe Tau that Digital Extremes hasn't confirmed are speculation.
