Warframe Steel Path is the game's "New Game Plus": a much harder version of the entire Star Chart that only pays off once your arsenal is ready. For many players it is the first real endgame step, with tougher enemies, its own rewards and a new currency called Steel Essence.
This guide explains, for beginners, how to unlock the Steel Path, what makes it so tough, how to survive your first runs and where the coveted currency comes from.
Short version: Unlock it by completing the regular Star Chart and then talking to Teshin in a Relay. Enemies get +100 levels and much more health and shields. Your reward is Steel Essence, which comes from Acolytes, Incursions and planet completions and which you spend in Teshin's shop, for example on the Umbra Forma Blueprint, Arcane Adapters, Riven Mods and cosmetics.
โ What Is the Warframe Steel Path?
In short, it is a difficulty mode for the existing Star Chart. You play the same nodes again, but the enemies are drastically stronger and tuned to the level of a fully modded veteran build. It isn't separate content but a switch that sets the whole Origin System map to "hard", including its own daily missions and mini-bosses.
๐ How to Unlock the Steel Path
The requirement is simple but time-consuming: you have to have completed the regular Star Chart, planets and Junctions included. This is exactly where many players get stuck, because easy-to-miss nodes are still open:
- Dark Sector nodes on various planets (for example Coba and Tikal on Earth, Hieracon on Pluto)
- Boss nodes such as Lephantis (Deimos) and the Ropalolyst (Jupiter)
- Quest-locked nodes up to the Chimera Prologue, and Vay Hek's node Oro on Earth, which needs Mastery Rank 5
Not required, according to the community wiki: the Mutalist Alad V and Jordas Golem Assassinations on Eris, Brutus on Uranus, and the Zariman, Albrecht's Laboratories and Hรถllvania nodes. Once the map is done, talk to Teshin in any Relay and ask him about the Steel Path to unlock it. After that, you switch between normal and Steel Path with the toggle in your Orbiter's Star Chart menu. Before you jump in, it's worth farming Galvanized Mods in Arbitrations first (more on that below).
โ๏ธ What Makes It So Hard?
The Steel Path mainly turns up the enemies' numbers. As soon as it is active, fixed modifiers apply:
- +100 enemy levels: A level 10 Grineer becomes a level 110 Grineer. That is the core of the difficulty.
- 2.5x health and shields: Enemies take two and a half times as much punishment, on top of the 100 extra levels. Watch out, common mistake: Update 36.0 removed the former extra armor multiplier and cut shields from 6.25x to 2.5x. Older guides that say "+250% to health, armor and shields" across the board are no longer up to date here.
- +100% resource and mod drop chance: Every Steel Path mission pays out double, so the mode is also a farming paradise once you can handle it.
- Higher spawn rate: Endless missions spawn enemies as if your squad were full, meaning more pressure and more Eximus units.
- Acolytes: Mini-bosses that show up regularly (see the next section).
๐น Acolytes and Steel Essence
The Acolytes are variants of the Shadow Stalker that use Warframe abilities and weapons. They spawn roughly every three to seven minutes, depending on how fast you kill, with a maximum of three in non-endless missions. They don't appear in Archwing, Assassination, Ascension, Duviri or Empyrean missions. Every defeated Acolyte drops 2 Steel Essence and one random Steel Path Arcane; Resource Boosters increase the Essence. Important: Acolytes have a cap on how many status procs can be active on them at once, so rely on hard-hitting weapons or heavy-attack melee instead of fast status spammers.
Steel Essence is the Steel Path's exclusive currency. You get it from Acolytes, from the daily Incursions and as 25 Essence per completed planet (together with a trophy and an emote).
๐ Incursions: Your Daily Essence Source
Every day at 00:00 UTC, six nodes are marked as Incursions. Each completed Incursion gives you 5 Steel Essence, so up to 30 per day, and boosters don't change that. They are usually short, very doable missions. For beginners, this is the most reliable and relaxed Essence source, because you don't have to grind through long endless runs.
๐ Teshin's Steel Path Shop
You spend your Essence at Teshin. His offer consists of a weekly rotating item (one purchase per week) and permanently available rewards. Especially interesting for beginners:
- Umbra Forma Blueprint (150 Steel Essence, part of the weekly rotation): otherwise extremely rare and hugely valuable for top builds
- Primary and Secondary Arcane Adapters (15 Steel Essence each, permanent): let you use Arcanes on those weapons
- Riven Mods (75 to 150 Steel Essence when they're in the rotation) and the Veiled Riven Cipher (20 Steel Essence, once per week); how rolling and Disposition work is covered in our Riven Mods guide
- Cosmetics (exclusive armor sets and decorations)
๐ก๏ธ How to Survive Your First Runs
The Steel Path is unforgiving. These three ground rules keep you alive.
1. Gear First, Then the Steel Path
Don't go in "naked". Get your Warframe and weapons to rank 30, invest a few Forma and pick up Galvanized Mods from Arbitrations plus weapon Arcanes (for example Primary Merciless). These mods scale your damage with every kill and give you the biggest damage jump for this mode.
2. Survival Before Damage
Mods like Adaptation and Rolling Guard keep you alive. For starters, tanky frames such as Revenant (Mesmer Skin), Wukong, Nezha or Octavia forgive most mistakes.
3. Status Beats Raw Numbers
The Viral + Slash combo is the standard for Steel Path builds: Viral increases damage to health, and Slash procs bleed as true damage that ignores armor. Heat strips armor and works as crowd control. Against heavily armored Grineer, an extra armor strip is worth it as well (for example via Heat procs, Corrosive or abilities like Pillage).
๐ก 5 Beginner Tips
- Start small: Do short Exterminate or Capture nodes first before you take on endless missions.
- Incursions first: The daily Incursions are the most stress-free way to start farming.
- Do Arbitrations early: Farm Galvanized Mods there first, then move on to the Steel Path; the damage boost is huge.
- Pack armor strip: Against Grineer, it often decides if your damage gets through at all.
- Hit Acolytes hard: Heavy-attack or burst weapons instead of fast status weapons, otherwise it takes forever.
โ Frequently Asked Questions about the Warframe Steel Path
What Mastery Rank do I need for the Steel Path?
There's no separate MR hurdle for the mode itself; what matters is that you have completed the nodes, and Vay Hek's node Oro among them needs Mastery Rank 5. For the open-world Bounties on this difficulty, however, you need Mastery Rank 10.
What is Steel Essence for?
It is the currency in Teshin's shop. You use it to buy the Umbra Forma Blueprint, Arcane Adapters, Riven Mods and exclusive cosmetics, among other things.
Is the Steel Path good for farming?
Yes. Thanks to +100% resource and mod drop chance, it's one of the best sources of rare drops once your build kills enemies reliably. Before that, it costs more nerves than it pays out.
Can any Warframe handle the Steel Path?
In principle, any frame can do it with the right mods and some Helminth tuning. For starters, though, durable frames like Revenant, Wukong or Nezha are much more forgiving than fragile glass cannons.
What's the most relaxed way to earn Essence?
The daily Incursions. Each of the six gives 5 Steel Essence and they are usually short missions.
