Planet Crafter Terraforming Stuck? Why Your Progress Stalls (2026)

Planet Crafter Terraforming Stuck? Why Your Progress Stalls (2026)

When Planet Crafter terraforming suddenly seems to stall even though you keep building machines, it's usually not a bug. It's a unit change. Every time the display jumps from one unit to the next, say from ยตPa to mPa, the same visible digit takes a thousand times as long. Your production keeps running; it's just filling a barrel that's a thousand times bigger.

That explains most of the reported Planet Crafter terraforming stalls. Real bottlenecks exist too, and you spot them by different signs. This guide keeps the two apart.

๐Ÿ“ The unit trap: how the Planet Crafter terraforming scale works

Planet Crafter terraforming uses standard SI prefixes, and each step in the chain means a factor of 1,000. The display switches automatically once four digits are full, so 1,000 becomes 1 k and 1,000 k becomes 1 M.

ValueUnit chain (small to large)
Oxygenppq โ†’ ppt โ†’ ppb โ†’ ppm
HeatpK โ†’ nK โ†’ ยตK โ†’ mK โ†’ K
PressurenPa โ†’ ยตPa โ†’ mPa โ†’ Pa

A quick example: you've just reached 900 ยตPa of pressure and it went pretty fast. At the jump to 1 mPa, everything looks frozen, because getting from 1 mPa to 2 mPa takes as much production as the entire way from 0 to 1,000 ยตPa did before.

This is the key sentence of the guide: a unit change isn't a stall, it's a stage that's a thousand times longer. Once you know how Planet Crafter terraforming counts, you keep building calmly instead of thinking your save is broken.

๐Ÿ” Planet Crafter terraforming: how to spot a real bottleneck

There are two situations where something really is stuck:

  • One value stands still while the others keep moving. If pressure keeps rising but heat hasn't budged for hours, the scale isn't the problem. You're missing production in exactly that track.
  • No new blueprints even though the total index keeps rising. That's by design. Some unlocks depend on the total index, others on milestones of single values. If you only push heat and neglect oxygen, you'll stall on blueprints despite a rising total.

That's where the most common real Planet Crafter terraforming mistake hides: building one-sided. The Terraformation Index adds up oxygen, heat and pressure, and later biomass from plants, insects and animals joins in. If you only feed one track, the total still rises, but the milestones of the other tracks stay out of reach. Which blueprints depend on what is covered in our guide to blueprints and microchips.

๐Ÿงฐ How to get Planet Crafter terraforming moving again

  1. Find your weakest track. Open the terraformation overview and ignore the total. Look at the three individual rates instead. The lowest one is your target.
  2. Raise the tier there, not the count. Ten tier 1 machines are almost always worse than three tier 3 machines in space, power and materials.
  3. Check power first. Without enough power, your machines stop working. It's the most common invisible brake.
  4. Only then add more machines. Once a tier is maxed out, scale wide.
  5. Let it run. Production keeps going while you explore or mine. Standing still in front of the display is the slowest option there is.

For the materials that tier 3 machines need, our guide to the Planet Crafter Craft Station and refinement helps. Good central spots to build are listed in the best base locations.

๐Ÿš€ When Planet Crafter terraforming really won't move

If your Planet Crafter terraforming is stuck even with upgraded machines, you're usually missing the next step up, and that depends on content outside your base:

  • Launch rockets. They give permanent boosts to single values and become the real lever from the midgame on.
  • Open up new resources. Higher machine tiers need materials you won't find in the starting area. See Planet Crafter planets and travel.
  • Trade instead of mining everything yourself: the trade rocket.
  • Unlock endgame tech. Uranium, nuclear reactors and the big rockets are in the Planet Crafter endgame guide.

๐ŸŽฎ A note for new console players

Since the PS5 and Xbox launch in July 2026, a lot of new players have joined, and they trip over the Planet Crafter terraforming unit trap especially often, because the switch is even easier to miss on a TV than on a monitor. Everything about the console version is in our article on The Planet Crafter on PS5. If you terraform together, split the tracks between players. How to set that up is in the Planet Crafter co-op guide.

๐Ÿ’ก FAQ about Planet Crafter terraforming

Why is my Planet Crafter terraforming index not going up anymore?

Usually it still is, just more slowly on screen: after a unit change, the same digit needs a thousand times the production.

How do I recognize a real bottleneck?

When one of the three values stands still while the others keep moving. Then you're missing production in exactly that track.

Why am I not getting new blueprints?

Some unlocks don't depend on the total index but on milestones of single values. Build up the track you've neglected.

Are more machines or higher tiers better for Planet Crafter terraforming?

Higher tiers. They give much more output per space, power and materials than lots of small machines.

Does Planet Crafter terraforming keep running while I'm away?

Yes. That's why exploring and mining always beat waiting in front of the display.

As of October 2026 (version 2.103). The unit chains and display behavior come from player community discussions and can be verified in game. That unlocks depend partly on the total index and partly on single values such as oxygen, heat, pressure or biomass is shown for every part in the planetcrafter.th.gl database, which also provides the in-game names.
