Short version: if you're looking for Planet Crafter osmium on Skeo and can't find anything you can mine by hand, your scanner isn't the problem. Update v2.102 changed how Planet Crafter osmium works on the moon: the osmium veins are still there, but they're now collected with an Ore Extractor instead of the Harvesting robot, and that version has been live for everyone since September 1, 2026. The changelog line reads: "Osmium on Skeo is now collected with ore extractor (not harvester anymore)".
Any guide or video built on the July test builds describes a state that no longer exists. And since September 1, 2026, v2.102 with the moon Skeo is the regular version, free on Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and GOG; the current patch is v2.103. You don't need a beta branch to see it.
๐ง Planet Crafter osmium on Prime: the ice caves
On the starting planet Prime, the Skeo change doesn't matter. Osmium sits as chunks in ice caves whose entrances are frozen at first. Only once your terraforming has built up enough heat does the ice melt and let you in. A few chunks also turn up in containers and after meteor showers, but you can't plan around that.
The best-known osmium cave lies north of your escape pod's landing spot at roughly 404:142:996. It connects directly to the zeolite cave: the zeolite cave's east entrance (396:144:988) and its north entrance from the sulfur field (455:71:1220) both run through the osmium cave. What lies beyond is covered in our Planet Crafter zeolite guide.
For a steady supply on Prime, you place a T2 Ore Extractor in the ice cave. According to planetcrafter.th.gl, it takes 3 Osmium, 1 Super Alloy Rod and 2 Iridium Rods, it's built on an ore vein and it unlocks at 364.5 mPa of pressure. So the first three Planet Crafter osmium chunks come out of the cave by hand.
Note: the coordinates come from community guides, partly from the Early Access era, not from Miju Games. The cave at 404:142:996 is backed by two independent sources. If in doubt, check the values in game.
โ ๏ธ Why every Planet Crafter osmium guide says something different
The reason the search results are such a mess is simple. Miju Games changed the tool for osmium on Skeo within six days on the test branch. Anyone who wrote a guide or recorded a video in that window captured an in-between state, and some guides misread the v2.102 notes as if the veins had been removed.
| Version | Date | What happened to osmium |
|---|---|---|
| v2.100 | July 15, 2026 | Skeo arrives as a preview. Osmium isn't mentioned in the patch notes. |
| v2.101 | July 22, 2026 | Osmium, bacteria and cocoa are added as harvestable veins on Skeo, mined with the Harvesting robot. |
| v2.102 | July 28, 2026 (test branch) | Tool change: osmium on Skeo is collected with the Ore Extractor, no longer with the Harvesting robot. |
| v2.102 (release) | Sep 1, 2026 | Skeo and the osmium change go live for everyone, free on Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and GOG. |
| v2.103 | Sep 14, 2026 | Skeo Patch #1 with fixes, no change to osmium. |
So there was a short phase where osmium on Skeo was mined differently. If you played or read guides during that week, you saw it. The veins themselves are still on the map today. v2.103 is the current live version, and according to Miju Games it's meant to be the last patch for the Skeo update.
๐ฆ What osmium is and what you need it for
Planet Crafter osmium is one of the heavy, high-tier resources and not something you need in the early game. It usually becomes relevant once you've made solid terraforming progress and are working toward advanced parts and endgame tech. It was already a minable resource long before Skeo. On Toxicity, 2.0 Update Patch #2 (April 2026) added more osmium near the new starting location, together with Tungsten and mushrooms.
An honest note: which recipes need exactly how much osmium shifted several times during the Skeo cycle. v2.101, for example, removed the genetic trait from the Magnetar Quartz recipe and changed the T2 Animals spreader rocket to 2 Amber plus 4 Genetic Traits. Don't rely on recipe lists copied from the web. Check the build menu in your own version; that's the only reliable way.
โ๏ธ How mining osmium on Skeo works now
The practical difference changes how you plan your base around Planet Crafter osmium. planetcrafter.th.gl lists osmium resource veins on Prime, Humble, Toxicity and Skeo, and describes the T2 Ore Extractor as "built on a tier 1 or tier 2 ore vein". On Skeo, that's now the way to get osmium: find the vein, put the extractor on it, and let it run.
| Aspect | v2.101 (test branch) | Since v2.102 |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Osmium vein on Skeo, marked on the map | The same osmium veins |
| Machine | Harvesting robot | Ore Extractor, built on the vein |
| Power | Depends on the machine | Yes, every extractor draws power |
| Automation | Yes | Yes, keeps running in the background |
The routine is the same as for other ores that run through extractors: find the vein, place the extractor, secure the power, then grab the output or hook it up to your storage. The game shows which extractor tier a vein accepts when you place it; th.gl doesn't list osmium for the basic Ore Extractor.
๐ก What this means for your base planning
Overall the change makes life easier, but it moves your bottlenecks:
- Power becomes the limit. Every extra extractor costs power. If you want Planet Crafter osmium in bulk, you need the capacity first, so plan your power supply generously.
- Location matters. The osmium vein decides where the extractor goes, and you build the logistics around it. Set your base up near the vein from the start and you won't have to move later.
- Storage. Extractors keep running while you're elsewhere. Without storage hooked up, the output fills and production stops.
- Time instead of luck. An extractor on a vein delivers steadily, which makes Planet Crafter osmium more predictable than picking up loose chunks.
๐บ๏ธ Does this apply to you? Yes, since September 1
For a long time, all of this only affected the test branch. Since September 1, 2026, Skeo with v2.102 is the regular version, free for everyone on Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and GOG. You don't need a beta branch for it.
Two things still matter. First, Skeo isn't a starting world. You only reach the moon after fully terraforming one of the starting planets and building the Extraction platform and the Interplanetary travel rocket. Second, check your version number in the main menu before you follow an older guide. v2.101 and v2.102 use different machines for osmium on Skeo.
๐ The test branch: you don't need it anymore
For Planet Crafter osmium and Skeo you no longer need to switch to the test branch since September 1, 2026. The regular version includes both. If you still want to try upcoming test builds, here's where Steam hides the option:
- Right-click The Planet Crafter in your Steam library
- Open Properties
- Go to Game Versions and Betas
- Pick the test branch and wait for the download
Important: test branch saves aren't guaranteed to work on the main branch. If you switch back later, a save that already contains test content can cause problems. Copy your save folder first. And expect values, recipes and mining methods to change with the next test patch. That's exactly what happened with Planet Crafter osmium within six days. How to move between worlds is covered in our guide to the Planet Crafter new planet trip.
๐ Community reports on resources on Skeo
For context, because a lot of Planet Crafter osmium searches come from Skeo frustration: in the Steam forums, players reported during the test phase that Skeo was short on resources. One player said, roughly, that he had reached the oxygen stage and seen nothing to mine except Amber. Others said Aluminum was hard to find and a start directly on Skeo was "nearly impossible".
These are community reports from the Steam discussions, not an official statement from Miju Games. A developer did point out in that thread that the moon wasn't in its final form yet.
One more point from v2.102 fits here: according to the changelog, the Portal generator can't be built on Skeo anymore. If you relied on portal logistics there, you'll have to plan differently. More on the moon itself and the cargo space problem is in our Planet Crafter Skeo guide and the guide to the Skeo inventory. Short on Aluminum too? The Planet Crafter aluminum guide helps.
๐ฏ FAQ about Planet Crafter osmium
Where do I find Planet Crafter osmium on Skeo?
In osmium veins marked on the map. Since v2.102 you collect them with an Ore Extractor instead of the Harvesting robot. According to planetcrafter.th.gl, the extractor is built on an ore vein.
Why do older guides say something else?
Because they were written during the v2.101 window, when the Harvesting robot did the job, or they read the v2.102 notes as if the veins were gone. Check the version number of every guide, not just the publishing date.
Does this apply to the regular version?
Yes. v2.100 to v2.102 first ran only on the test branch. Since September 1, 2026, v2.102 with Skeo and the osmium change is live for everyone on Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and GOG, now in version 2.103.
Is Skeo available to everyone now?
Yes, since September 1, 2026, free on Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and GOG. Skeo isn't a starting world, though. You reach it after fully terraforming a planet and building the Extraction platform and the Interplanetary travel rocket.
Where do I get Planet Crafter osmium on Prime?
In the ice caves, for example the one at about 404:142:996 north of the landing spot, which opens once it's warm enough. Later a T2 Ore Extractor in the cave gives you a steady supply.
Will I lose my save if I switch to the test branch?
Not automatically, but test branch saves aren't guaranteed to work on the main branch. Back up your save folder before switching.
