Is Warframe worth it for new players in 2026? Yes, if you're looking for a free co-op action game where you can earn every weapon and every frame without real money, and if a long collecting grind doesn't scare you off. The catch isn't a paywall. It's inventory space and time.
This guide shows what's actually free, where Platinum comes in, what limits trading has and who shouldn't bother. Everything was checked against Digital Extremes' pages on warframe.com, the official support site and the community-run wiki at wiki.warframe.com. Community figures are marked as such.
๐ก Short answer: is Warframe worth it for you?
Digital Extremes has run the game as free-to-play since the PC launch on March 25, 2013. Today it's on PC (own launcher, Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. You play missions solo or in a squad of up to four.
What decides whether it's worth getting in is the payment model. Frames, weapons and non-cosmetic gear can all be earned. For Prime items, warframe.com explicitly describes the free route through Aya and Void Relics. Money buys shortcuts, not exclusive power. If you accept that, you get a loot shooter with over ten years of content for nothing.
๐ฆ What's free and what costs Platinum
Platinum is the premium currency. This table separates what you get by playing from where Platinum is just a shortcut.
| What | Free route | Platinum shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| Frames and weapons | Blueprints from the Market for credits or as drops, then build in the Foundry | Buy them ready-made in the Market or rush the build time |
| Prime items | Open Void Relics in Void Fissure missions, trade Aya with Varzia | Prime Access or Regal Aya |
| Orokin Catalyst and Orokin Reactor | Nightwave Creds in the Nightwave Offerings, blueprints from activities | Ready-made in the Market |
| Forma | Earn the blueprint and build it | Ready-made in the Market |
| Extra slots | No direct route without Platinum | Platinum, which you can also earn by trading |
Per warframe.com, the Orokin Catalyst and Orokin Reactor permanently double mod capacity. The Catalyst goes on weapons, the Reactor on frames, companions, Archwings and more. How to spend mod capacity wisely is in our mod capacity guide for beginners.
๐ Platinum without real money: how trading works
The main reason Warframe works without a credit card is trading between players. You sell Prime parts, mods, relics or Arcanes to other players who pay with Platinum they bought. Which methods pay best is in our Warframe platinum farming guide.
Per Digital Extremes' support, trading requires:
- Mastery Rank 2 or higher.
- Two-factor authentication (2FA) on your account.
- Enough credits for the trading tax, which depends on rarity.
- Trades happen in a Clan Dojo or in Maroo's Bazaar on Mars.
Per the community wiki, your number of trades per day equals your Mastery Rank. Only purchased Platinum is tradable. A new account's starting Platinum isn't. Since October 2024, per warframe.com, trading works across platforms when cross-play is on. Per warframe.com, the Nintendo Switch is left out of cross-platform Platinum trading.
๐งฎ The real bottleneck: slots, not a paywall
Here's the data point most overviews leave out: early on, it isn't frames or weapons that cost you money, it's the space to keep them. Per the community wiki, a new account starts with 3 Warframe slots and 11 weapon slots.
Each extra Warframe slot costs 20 Platinum per the community wiki, and two weapon slots cost 12 Platinum. The community wiki also lists an Orokin Catalyst at 20 Platinum in the Market, or 75 Creds through Nightwave. The math is clear: your first traded Platinum is best spent on slots, because Catalysts and Reactors are also available for free.
The second reason for slots is Mastery Rank. Per warframe.com, a weapon leveled to rank 30 gives 3,000 Mastery points, a frame 6,000. If you level gear and then sell it, you need free space for the next weapon. Without slots, your progress stalls.
๐ Platforms, cross-play and cross-save
Since the โLua's Preyโ update, per warframe.com, you play together across PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and mobile. The Cross-Platform Play setting is in the options menu and can be turned off.
Cross-save links several platform accounts into one primary account. Per warframe.com, you need a PC account for that, but you don't have to install the game on PC. The link is permanent: you can't reach the progress on the linked secondary accounts afterward. So check first which account carries more progress.
โ ๏ธ The honest weak points
A fair check also names where new players struggle. Know these four points going in:
- Overwhelming start: Mods, Focus, Syndicates, open worlds and Railjack come at you fast. The in-game Codex helps but doesn't replace an explanation.
- Waiting times: The Foundry keeps building while you're offline, but a frame still takes several days. Rushing costs Platinum.
- Mastery Rank gates: Per warframe.com, trading, joining a clan, daily Syndicate Standing and some weapons depend on your rank. Every new rank requires a Mastery test.
- RNG when farming: Components and Prime parts drop by chance. Some sets take a lot of tries.
If you want a game with a clear ending or a fixed twenty-hour campaign, Warframe probably isn't for you. It rewards patience and routine, not finishing.
๐ Is Prime Access worth it, or is the free route enough?
Prime Access sells a new Prime frame and its weapons instantly for real money. That's purely a time saver: the same Prime parts drop from Void Relics, which you open in Void Fissure missions. Older Prime sets come back later through Prime Resurgence, where you trade Aya with Varzia in Maroo's Bazaar for relics.
So whether the purchase is worth it comes down to your patience. If you open relics anyway, you get the parts on the side and can sell duplicates for Platinum. If you want to play a new Prime frame on day one, you pay for exactly that head start, not for more power.
๐ Is it worth coming back after a break?
For returning players, things are easier than for newcomers. Your account, inventory and Mastery Rank stay intact, and with cross-save you can even continue on another platform if you link the accounts.
The sensible way back: check open quests in the Codex, update your mods to current rules, and only then head into new areas. Our Warframe Duviri guide covers getting into Duviri, and our Nightwave rank 30 guide covers Nightwave and its rewards.
๐ฏ Who it's worth it for
| Player type | Worth it? |
|---|---|
| You like loot games and long-term goals | clear recommendation |
| You like co-op with friends on other platforms | clear recommendation thanks to cross-play |
| You don't want to pay anything | doable, with trading and patience |
| You want a self-contained story | probably not |
| You only have a little time per week | possible, but progress is slow |
๐บ๏ธ How to start right
On warframe.com, Digital Extremes advises new players to first play the Star Chart through the Origin System, follow the main quests and only visit open worlds like the Plains of Eidolon or the Orb Vallis later. That includes joining a clan for the Dojo and learning the Bullet Jump as a movement technique.
Which frame to add first is covered in our guide to the best Warframes for beginners. For your first Prime parts and Platinum from trading, check our Void Relics farming guide. Once the Star Chart is done, the Steel Path is the next step.
โ FAQ: is Warframe worth it?
Is Warframe really free?
Yes. The game is free-to-play, and frames, weapons and non-cosmetic gear can be earned. Platinum speeds things up and buys slots and cosmetics.
Is Warframe pay-to-win?
Not in the strict sense: bought Platinum doesn't get you gear you can't also earn. It saves time, and noticeably so.
Can I get Platinum without real money?
Yes, by trading with other players. You need Mastery Rank 2, two-factor authentication and credits for the trading tax.
Is Warframe worth it solo?
Yes, almost all missions work solo. Per warframe.com, the game is designed around teams, though, and some activities go much faster in a squad.
Can I take my progress between console and PC?
Yes, through cross-save. You need a PC account and pick one primary account. The link can't be undone.
Is Warframe worth it on Switch or mobile?
Yes, both versions take part in cross-play and cross-save and can be linked to the PC account. One limit per warframe.com: cross-platform Platinum trading isn't available on Switch.
What should I buy with my first Platinum?
Slots. You can also get Orokin Catalysts and Reactors through Nightwave, but extra inventory space only costs Platinum.
