Graveyard Keeper 2 Formulation Bench: Unlock, Recipes and Gold

You unlock the Graveyard Keeper 2 Formulation Bench with the Church Lighting I tech, and it's a station of the Anatomy line. It makes fertilizer, Dynamite, gold organs, Golden nuggets, Golden ingots and injections, and every recipe needs a certain Anatomy mastery.

This guide shows how to get the bench, what it makes at which mastery level and where the usual stumbling blocks are. What we read in the German version of the game ourselves is marked as confirmed. Community wiki data is labeled.

๐Ÿ”“ How to Unlock the Graveyard Keeper 2 Formulation Bench

The blueprint isn't where you'd expect it. It sits on the Theology tab of the tech tree, in the Church Lighting I node. In the game the node shows a candle and two blueprints. That one of them is the Formulation Bench is confirmed by the community wiki wikily.gg, which lists the bench under Church Lighting I.

If you look for it in the alchemy corner of the tech tree, you're looking in the wrong place. It makes sense once you know the Formulation Bench also makes candles for the church.

Build Cost According to the Community Wiki

We didn't read the build cost ourselves. The community wiki wikily.gg lists:

  • 4 Wooden Plank
  • 4 Bronze Detail
  • 1 Polished Bronze

The wiki gives the Alchemy Lab and the Writing Basement as build locations. Our alchemy lab's build menu shows the Large Chest, Zombie Supplier Station, Laboratory I, Laboratory II, Flask shelf and Distillation Cube. So check both rooms if you can't find the bench right away.

โš—๏ธ What the Formulation Bench Makes

In the Formulation Bench's recipe menu, we saw these groups in the German version of the game:

  • Gold organs, with two versions per organ
  • Golden nuggets and Golden ingots
  • Injections
  • Farming Fertilizer III (the community wiki lists the other fertilizer tiers)
  • Dynamite

The community wiki wikily.gg counts 36 recipes in total, with requirements from Anatomy mastery 1 to 8. According to the wiki, that includes candles, incense, Paper glop for the Paper Press, Urns with Ashes and a Tooth from any skull. So the Formulation Bench is more of a catch-all station for church, garden, morgue and mining than a pure alchemy tool.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Recipes by Anatomy Mastery

The table sorts the recipes by the mastery they need. Two values we confirmed in the game: Farming Fertilizer III at level 4 and Dynamite at level 5. Both match the community wiki.

We couldn't read every recipe above level 5 from the community wiki. Golden nugget (level 6) and Golden ingot (level 8) are on wikily.gg's item pages. We don't have a source for the injections' level, even though we saw them at the Formulation Bench in the game.

๐Ÿฅ‡ Gold Organs: Two Versions per Organ

In the German version, the Formulation Bench shows two gold recipes for every organ. The community wiki explains the difference: one uses the red Organ Improver, the other the green version with a white skull on the label. Both turn any organ into its gold version.

We checked the red Organ Improver in the game. Its tooltip says it makes the best red organ, and its rune total is 4 red and 1 green, for example from Stone plus Copper Nugget. The green version with 4 green is community data. How to hit the runes in the lab is in our Graveyard Keeper 2 alchemy guide.

What's the point? According to the community wiki, a gold organ carries up to 3 red skulls. For an undead worker that means more perk slots. How skulls, collars and organs fit together is in our Graveyard Keeper 2 zombies guide, which also lists the injections with their community values.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Golden Nuggets and Golden Ingots

We saw in the recipe menu that Golden nuggets and Golden ingots come from the Formulation Bench. Ingredients and mastery come from the community wiki wikily.gg, which says both recipes are unlocked by the "Alchemy, Advanced" tech:

  • 1 Golden nugget = 1 Iron Ore + 1 Philosopher Stone, Anatomy mastery 6
  • 1 Golden ingot = 1 Iron Ingot + 1 Philosopher Stone, Anatomy mastery 8

According to the community wiki, you brew the Philosopher Stone in Laboratory II with 3 red, 3 green and 3 blue. It's used up on every craft. That makes this route expensive: one Golden ingot costs a full three-slot brew plus the Iron Ingot.

The trader is often cheaper. The Trademaster sells Golden nuggets from Tier I for 1 silver each, with a stock of 20. We saw that in the game. So check if your lab brew is worth more than a silver coin.

For ingots, wikily.gg also lists a route without the Philosopher Stone: Furnace II with the Bellows upgrade turns 3 Golden nuggets and 30 Fuel into 2 Golden ingots, at Smithing mastery 4 and after the Reanimation II tech. We saw that tech node with a Golden ingot icon in the German game.

๐ŸŒฑ Fertilizer and Dynamite

For many players, fertilizer is most of the work at the Formulation Bench. Farming Fertilizer III is confirmed: 8 Peat and 1 Miracle Growth Elixir at Anatomy mastery 4, with a tooltip saying it adds +5 green to the bed. The Vineyard Upgrade alone takes six. Why a bed only has two fertilizer slots and where Peat comes from is in our Graveyard Keeper 2 fertilizer guide.

According to wikily.gg, each fertilizer recipe gives one piece, or two with the Compost Chemist perk. The community wiki graveyard-keeper.wiki says two per craft with no mention of a perk. If you fertilize a lot, keep an eye out for that perk.

You need Dynamite for the Factory walls and the Old Mine. We confirmed the recipe and mastery 5 in the game. You mix the Explosive Dust (2 red, 2 blue, for example from Tin and Seed Oil) in the lab, and the Alcohol comes from the Distillation Cube. The full chain is in our Graveyard Keeper 2 dynamite guide.

๐ŸงŸ Workers at the Formulation Bench

According to the community wiki, an undead worker can run the Formulation Bench, but only recipes whose requirement its own Anatomy mastery meets. We saw the matching talent tree in the game: every zombie has a skull tab for Anatomy.

In practice, a worker with low Anatomy only handles the simple recipes. For Farming Fertilizer III it needs at least level 4, for Dynamite level 5. Until then you make the demanding recipes yourself.

โš ๏ธ Common Formulation Bench Mistakes

  • Looking in the wrong tree: the blueprint hangs on Church Lighting I on the Theology tab, not in alchemy.
  • Mastery too low: a recipe stays locked even with every ingredient in your inventory. Check the level first.
  • Wrong Organ Improver: red and green lead to different gold versions. Decide which one you need before you brew.
  • Laboratory I for the Philosopher Stone: the community wiki lists it as a Laboratory II recipe with three slots.
  • Paying too much for gold: one brew per nugget rarely pays off while the Trademaster still has stock.

One trick for mastery limits comes from the community wiki: Third Eye Salt, a 1 red and 5 blue mix from Laboratory II, gives +2 to all five masteries for 7.5 minutes. We haven't tested that at the Graveyard Keeper 2 Formulation Bench ourselves yet.

โ“ FAQ: Graveyard Keeper 2 Formulation Bench

How do I unlock the Formulation Bench?

Through the Church Lighting I tech on the Theology tab of the tech tree. It gives you the blueprint.

Why is it on the Theology tab?

Because the bench also makes the church candles. Simple Candle, Pretty Candle and Magnificent Candle are all crafted there.

Which mastery does Farming Fertilizer III need?

Anatomy mastery 4. The recipe is 8 Peat and 1 Miracle Growth Elixir.

When can I make Dynamite?

From Anatomy mastery 5, with 2 Explosive Dust and 1 Alcohol.

How do I get gold organs?

At the Formulation Bench from an organ and an Organ Improver. There are two versions per organ, depending on the improver's color.

Is gold from the Formulation Bench worth it?

Rarely. According to community data, every nugget and every ingot costs one Philosopher Stone from Laboratory II. The Trademaster sells nuggets for 1 silver.

Checked against the German game as of October 2026: the Church Lighting I node with a candle and two blueprints, the recipe groups at the Formulation Bench (gold organs with two versions each, Golden nuggets and Golden ingots, injections), Farming Fertilizer III at mastery 4, Dynamite at mastery 5, the red Organ Improver, the zombie Anatomy tab and the Golden nugget price at the Trademaster. Build cost, other recipes and levels, gold ingredients, perks and salt come from the community wikis wikily.gg and graveyard-keeper.wiki.
