Graveyard Keeper 2 Fertilizer: Peat, Two Slots and Farming Fertilizer III

Graveyard Keeper 2 Fertilizer: Peat, Two Slots and Farming Fertilizer III

You make Graveyard Keeper 2 fertilizer at the Formulation Bench from Peat and a growth elixir, and every garden bed takes two of them at most. Peat comes from the Compost Pile, the elixir from your alchemy lab.

This guide covers how the two bed slots work, which types exist, what the strongest tier really costs and how to keep the Vineyard Upgrade and a zombie gardener supplied. Anything we read in the German version of the game ourselves is marked as confirmed. Community wiki data is labeled as such.

๐ŸŒฑ Graveyard Keeper 2 Fertilizer: Only Two Slots per Bed

This is where a lot of players get stuck. A garden bed in Graveyard Keeper 2 has exactly two fertilizer slots. The Fertilizers I tech unlocks the first one, Fertilizers II the second. Tiers III and IV don't add a slot. They only bring better recipes.

You'll see a third, locked slot on the bed. As far as anyone knows, it can't be unlocked. The community wiki lists it as unclear whether that's a bug, and there's no known workaround. So don't spend tech points hoping for a third slot.

TechColumn in the Farming treeCostEffect
Fertilizers I210 green1st slot, Peat, Compost Pile
Fertilizers II330 green, 10 blue2nd slot
Fertilizers III560 green, 15 bluebetter recipes, no slot

Positions and costs come from the community wiki graveyard-keeper.wiki.

One more planning rule from the community wiki: you can't put the same type into one bed twice. The two slots are meant for two different types.

๐Ÿ‚ Peat and the Compost Pile

Peat is the base of every Graveyard Keeper 2 fertilizer. In the rune book it carries 1 green and 1 blue rune, which we checked in the game. According to the community wiki, you make it in the Compost Pile, which you can build in the garden once you have Fertilizers I. It runs on its own: start the recipe, put Leaves in, collect Peat later.

StationInputOutput
Compost Pile8 Leaf2 Peat
Compost Pile II16 Leaf5 Peat

These amounts come from the community wiki. Quick math: the first Compost Pile needs 4 Leaves per Peat, the second tier only 3.2. If you fertilize a lot, get to Compost Pile II early.

Leaves drop when you harvest. According to the community wiki, a bed with perfect growth gives back two Leaves on top of the actual crop. That's barely enough early on, because Leaves also end up in alchemy mixes. Keep a separate Leaf stock just for compost.

๐Ÿงช Growth Elixirs as an Ingredient

Besides Peat, every Graveyard Keeper 2 fertilizer needs an elixir from the lab. There are three growth elixirs plus Dream Dust. We checked their rune totals in the game's rune book:

ElixirRunesLab
Weak Growth Elixir1 red, 2 greenLaboratory I
Rich Growth Elixir1 red, 3 greenLaboratory I
Miracle Growth Elixir1 red, 5 greenLaboratory II (3 slots)
Dream Dust1 green, 1 blueLaboratory I

Which ingredients hit those totals is covered in our Graveyard Keeper 2 growth elixir guide, and the full rune table is in the Graveyard Keeper 2 alchemy guide. For the Miracle Growth Elixir, Flour plus Beeswax plus Leaf works out by rune math to exactly 1 red and 5 green.

โš—๏ธ Every Graveyard Keeper 2 Fertilizer Recipe

The actual crafting happens at the Formulation Bench. There you combine Peat with the matching elixir. We read the recipe for the third Farming tier in the game. The other tiers come from the community wiki:

Headstart Fertilizer I21 Weak Growth Elixircommunity wiki
Crop Boosting Fertilizer I21 Dream Dustcommunity wiki
Farming Fertilizer II41 Rich Growth Elixircommunity wiki

The third tier also needs Anatomy mastery 4 at the Formulation Bench. Its tooltip says it adds +5 green to the bed. How many pieces one craft gives is disputed between community sources: graveyard-keeper.wiki says two, wikily.gg says one, and two only with the Compost Chemist perk. We haven't counted it ourselves yet.

๐ŸŒพ Which Two Types Go in the Bed?

According to the community wiki, the types fall roughly into two groups. Farming types and Peat (green values) make the plant grow faster and cut down on failed steps. Other types raise yield, seed return and crop quality instead.

Since the same type can't go in twice, the obvious setup is a growth type in the first slot and a yield type in the second. That's our own conclusion from the community data, not an official recommendation.

Know the ceiling, though. More growth only raises the yield up to the bed's maximum. A bed takes four seeds and, with perfect growth, gives back six Flax, six seeds and two Leaves (community wiki). Past that point, only more beds help. According to the community wiki, Garden Upgrade I and II expand your garden to 20 and 30 bed spots.

What you need the Flax for is in our Graveyard Keeper 2 fabric guide: a single fabric delivery costs 16 Flax.

๐Ÿ‡ Vineyard Upgrade: The Biggest Consumer

The Vineyard Upgrade needs more of the third tier than anything else in Graveyard Keeper 2. We checked its blueprint in the game:

  • 6ร— Farming Fertilizer III
  • 6ร— Advanced Detail
  • 4ร— Oiled Beam (made at the Woodworking Workbench II)

According to the community wiki wikily.gg, Advanced Detail is made at the Iron Anvil from 2 Bronze Detail and 2 Iron Detail and needs Smithing mastery 7. One craft gives 3 pieces, 4 with the Engineer trader perk, so six Advanced Detail take two crafts.

What the vineyard really costs: six pieces at one per craft (wikily.gg without the perk) means 48 Peat and 6 Miracle Growth Elixirs. At two per craft (graveyard-keeper.wiki, or wikily.gg only with Compost Chemist) that halves to 24 Peat and 3 elixirs. In the worst case you need 192 Leaves with the first Compost Pile, or 160 Leaves in ten runs with Compost Pile II. Build that stock before you start on the vineyard.

๐ŸงŸ Zombie Gardener in Graveyard Keeper 2

Past a certain number of beds, a zombie gardener pays off. It sows and harvests on its own in the garden or the vineyard. According to the community wiki, you need a Gardener Stand with an undead worker on it.

  • The gardener needs a shovel in hand. Without a tool it just stands around. A bronze shovel gives it +2 Farming according to the community wiki.
  • Seeds go into the garden chest. According to community sources, you pick the crop with a tablet, for Flax that's the flax tablet.
  • The same zone needs a staffed Zombie Supplier Station, or the gardener won't keep working.

Our sources don't say whether the gardener fills the bed slots too, so plan those yourself. You also need undead helpers for the church choir. More on that in our Graveyard Keeper 2 choir guide.

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes

Most problems here come from the same few causes:

  • Miracle elixir in the wrong lab: 1 red and 5 green need three ingredients. Laboratory I only has two slots, so you need Laboratory II.
  • Mastery too low: without Anatomy mastery 4 at the Formulation Bench, the third Farming tier stays locked even with Peat and elixir ready.
  • Tech points for a third slot: Fertilizers III and IV don't open another slot on the bed.
  • Leaves used up: if your Leaves go into alchemy, nothing is left for the Compost Pile. Plan both uses separately.
  • Same type twice: two identical types in one bed aren't allowed, according to the community wiki.

โ“ FAQ: Graveyard Keeper 2 Fertilizer

How many fertilizer slots does a bed have?

Two. Fertilizers I unlocks the first, Fertilizers II the second. The visible third slot can't be opened right now.

How do I make Farming Fertilizer III?

At the Formulation Bench from 8 Peat and 1 Miracle Growth Elixir. You need Anatomy mastery 4.

Where do I get Peat?

From the Compost Pile in the garden. According to the community wiki it turns 8 Leaves into 2 Peat, and Compost Pile II turns 16 Leaves into 5 Peat.

Can I put the same fertilizer in a bed twice?

No, not according to the community wiki. Combine a growth type with a yield type.

What exactly does the third Farming tier do?

The tooltip says it adds +5 green to the bed. Green values speed up growth.

Why do I need so much Farming Fertilizer III?

Mostly for the Vineyard Upgrade, which alone takes six.

Checked against the German version of the game as of October 2026: recipe, mastery and tooltip of the third Farming tier, the Vineyard Upgrade blueprint, the runes of Peat and the three growth elixirs, and the limit of two slots per bed. The other recipes, Compost Pile amounts, tech costs, yield values and the gardener setup come from the community wiki graveyard-keeper.wiki, the differing amount per craft and the Advanced Detail recipe from wikily.gg. English names follow wikily.gg.
