Enshrouded Coal: Mine, Charcoal and Every Furnace Recipe

Enshrouded Coal is something you only mine once you reach the Albaneve Summits, and it only burns in the Blast Furnace. Until then, your Smelter runs on Charcoal, which you make from wood and dirt in the Charcoal Kiln right from the start.

This guide explains the difference between the two fuels, the known mine, every Smelter and Blast Furnace recipe and our own math on how much fuel you need up to Flame Level 8. Recipes and item data come from the game data database enshrouded.th.gl (version 1.0). The totals are our own calculations.

๐Ÿชจ Two fuels: which one you need when

Coal and Charcoal are not interchangeable. Every recipe asks for exactly one of them, and each belongs to its own furnace.

The in-game description calls Enshrouded Coal "a hard lump of coal" that "makes for great fuel." Charcoal, according to its description, is created in a kiln under high temperatures. The community wiki at enshrouded.wiki.gg lists a stack size of 250 for both.

โ›๏ธ Where to find Enshrouded Coal: mine and region

The game data only names the Albaneve Summits as the mining source for Enshrouded Coal. Unlike Silver Ore, the entry doesn't explicitly say Shroud. The database lists no recipe that produces it and no vendor. The community wiki puts the region at biome level 30 to 40.

According to the database, you can only enter the Albaneve Summits Shroud at Flame Level 7, as our Enshrouded Silver Ore guide shows. Whether the mine at Rothstep sits inside the Shroud is something neither the database nor the wiki says.

๐Ÿ“ The known mine at Rothstep

According to the community wiki (page edited October 29, 2026, so after 1.0), you mine Enshrouded Coal with a pickaxe. As an easy spot, it names the Rothstep Mining Settlement northwest of the Albaneve Summits Ancient Spire. The region page lists a mine there.

Neither the database nor the wiki names a minimum pickaxe. Since 1.0, the Keen Games changelog says the details menu of more resources shows a hint on where to get them. Check that before you head out.

โš”๏ธ Loot from the Scavenger

An enemy the database simply calls Scavenger drops 1 to 4 Enshrouded Coal in the Albaneve Summits with a 28 percent chance. The same chance applies to Silver Ore there. The wiki calls it the Scavenger Miner. That's not enough for a farming route, and our math below shows why.

๐Ÿ”ฅ How to make Charcoal in the Charcoal Kiln

The Blacksmith crafts the Charcoal Kiln from 20 Stone. According to the database, besides fuel for the Smelter it also makes Wood Acid and Tar. For 10 Charcoal you need:

  • 12 wood of one type: Wood Logs, Hardwood, Conifer Logs or one of the other wood types.
  • 3 dirt of one type: for example Springlands Dirt, seven types in total.

The community wiki lists a crafting time of 2:00 minutes and says the recipe unlocks once you get your first Stone. You have to rescue the Blacksmith first, see our Enshrouded craftspeople guide.

Charcoal isn't just for smelting. The Forge, the Blacksmith's workshop, costs 30 Stone, 10 Metal Scraps, 12 Wood Logs and 10 Charcoal. Metal Sheets need 2 each. At the Grinding Stones, 3 Charcoal become 3 Coal Powder, which another eleven recipes ask for, Black Powder among them.

๐Ÿญ Smelter: every recipe with Charcoal

The Blacksmith builds the Smelter from 50 Fired Bricks and a Crucible. How to fire the bricks is in our Enshrouded Lump of Clay guide. It makes five materials, and the fuel is always Charcoal.

OutputIngredientsCharcoalPer piece
10 Copper Bars10 Copper Ore101.0
10 Tin Bars10 Tin Ore, 2 Wood Acid101.0
10 Bronze Bars7 Copper Bars, 3 Tin Bars101.0
10 Iron Bars10 Iron Ore202.0
10 Glass30 Sand (one type)101.0

Iron is the most expensive item here. Every bar costs two Charcoal, so 2.4 Wood Logs. For copper, the community wiki partly lists different amounts, which our Enshrouded Copper Bars guide compares.

๐Ÿญ Blast Furnace: all 9 recipes with Enshrouded Coal

Among other things, the Blast Furnace costs 20 Fired Bricks, 10 Lump of Clay, a Bellows and 10 Iron Bars at the Blacksmith. It always makes 20 pieces per run and only accepts Enshrouded Coal from the Albaneve Summits.

Sources differ on steel: The database lists 40 Coal. The wiki's Steel Bars page says 50, but it was last edited in March 2026, before 1.0. The times come from the wiki's Coal page from October 29, 2026. Silver, Steel, Gold and Celestium Bars only come from the Blast Furnace, as the Smelter has no recipe for them.

๐Ÿงช Other recipes with Enshrouded Coal

Of the 55 recipes, 9 are Blast Furnace bars. Most of the rest is level 30 gear and steel or silver decor. These are the ones that matter during a playthrough:

  • Flammable Goo (Laboratory): 5 Tar, Shroud Vapor, Goo and 1 Coal make 5 Flammable Goo. Flame Level 7 asks for 30 of it, so 6 Coal go into the altar.
  • Pocket Heater (Hunter): a consumable with +4 cold resistance, made from Metal Sheets, Leather and 1 Coal according to the database.
  • Fire Bolt VI: 4 Amethyst and 4 Coal make 20, craftable by hand.
  • Brazen Bull Shield (Blacksmith, level 30): 2 Padding, 8 Steel Bars, 8 Coal, 5 Amethyst.

Other uses include the Golden Twinflame Swords and the Wolf's Hydra at levels 26 to 46, the Eternal Fire Totem I, steel barrels, steel doors and Albaneve Summits fireplaces and braziers.

๐Ÿ“Š Our math: how much Enshrouded Coal you need

The Blast Furnace doesn't always save fuel. Per bar, it burns just as much for copper and iron as the Smelter. It only needs less for tin and glass (0.75 instead of 1) and bronze (0.5 instead of 1). Its real advantage is elsewhere: double batches, no wood, and it's the only furnace for silver, steel, gold and celestium.

For the road to Flame Level 8, we calculated in full runs:

StepRunsEnshrouded Coal
30 Flammable Goo for Flame Level 76 in the Laboratory6
40 Silver Bars for Flame Level 82 in the Blast Furnace80
20 Steel Bars for gear1 in the Blast Furnace40 (old wiki value: 50)
Total126 (old wiki value: 136)

Before any of that, you need the Blast Furnace itself. Its 10 Iron Bars cost 10 Iron Ore and 20 Charcoal in the Smelter, so two Charcoal Kiln runs with 24 Wood Logs and 6 dirt. The order matters: the Flammable Goo for Flame Level 7 needs Enshrouded Coal before you reach level 7. So grab your first pieces on your very first trip to the Albaneve Summits.

Compare that with loot. At a 28 percent chance for 1 to 4 pieces, a Scavenger drops 0.7 Coal on average, assuming every amount is equally likely. For 126 pieces that's around 180 fights. Mining is clearly faster. Our tip for your first trip: 140 Enshrouded Coal, which covers the list even with the old wiki value.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips for Enshrouded Coal and Charcoal

  • Build the Charcoal Kiln early: It only costs 20 Stone and stays useful all game, also for Wood Acid and Tar.
  • Use any wood: Every wood type counts. Hardwood or Conifer Logs from later regions work just as well.
  • Move iron to the Blast Furnace: Once you have it, you save 2.4 Wood Logs per Iron Bar at the same fuel cost per bar.
  • Move bronze too: In the Blast Furnace, Bronze costs half the fuel, see our Enshrouded Tin Ore guide.
  • Plan for the cold: A Pocket Heater costs 1 Coal and gives +4 cold resistance.
