Dune Awakening Steel: Recipe, Carbon Ore and the Right Cutteray

Dune Awakening Steel: Recipe, Carbon Ore and the Right Cutteray

To make Dune Awakening steel, you need Carbon Ore, an Iron Ingot and 50 water, processed in any Ore Refinery. In the Small Ore Refinery, one Steel Ingot costs 4 Carbon Ore; in the Large one, only 2.

The real bottleneck isn't the recipe, it's the Carbon Ore. You have to head north out of the starting area for it, and you need a better Cutteray. Below are all three recipes, the route to carbon, what a full build-out really costs and what you need the ingots for.

โš’๏ธ The Dune Awakening Steel Recipe in Every Ore Refinery

Steel is tier 3 in Dune Awakening, between iron and aluminum. The item database dune.gaming.tools, which reads its values from the game files, lists the Steel Ingot with three recipes. All of them run in an Ore Refinery; there's no separate steel forge.

StationCarbon OreIron IngotWaterTime
Small Ore Refinery41505 s
Medium Ore Refinery31504 s
Large Ore Refinery21503 s

The Iron Ingot is its own step in the same station. According to the database, it costs 25 water plus 5 Iron Ore in the small, 4 in the medium and 3 in the large refinery (10, 7 and 5 seconds). So every finished Steel Ingot always eats 75 water, no matter which refinery you run. A bigger station only saves ore.

You don't need research for the ingot itself. The Small Ore Refinery sits in the very first section of the building research tree and costs 90 Salvaged Metal. Once you have Carbon Ore in your pockets, you can start.

๐Ÿ“ Finding Carbon Ore: Jabal Eifrit North of the Gap

You mine Carbon Ore from carbon deposits. According to the English guide site Beebom, the early areas of Arrakis don't have any, so you won't find it in southern Hagga Basin where you start. The best hint comes from the game itself: a side quest sends you through the three parts of Jabal Eifrit (Al-janub, Al-sharq and Al-gharb). In its closing text, your character notes they'll have to come back here when they need carbon or Advanced Servoks in large amounts.

Only community guides name more precise spots:

  • Jabal Eifrit Al-janub: per Beebom, the area lies north of the Eastern Vermillius Gap and is surrounded by quicksand. Carbon is found there in deposits, as small ground pickups and in crates near strong enemies.
  • Approach via the western gap: Sportskeeda describes the route from the Western Vermillius Gap north into Jabal Eifrit Al-janub and suggests moving your base near several carbon deposits. Beebom talks about the eastern gap instead. Both name the same target area, just a different approach.

Treat these as starting points, not fixed coordinates. Spawns can shift with updates, and Funcom itself doesn't name deposit locations. Once you're across the gap, our base building guide helps you decide where a second base near the ore makes sense.

Buying Carbon Ore Instead of Mining It

The database lists five vendors selling Carbon Ore with no requirements. The biggest stock belongs to an ore vendor the database only lists under an internal Jabal Eifrit label: 120 units at 200 each. The vendors with the O'odham and Shield Wall labels have 60 each at 200, while Aliza DeCastille and one more vendor have 30 each at 400. That covers your first ingots, but not a buggy.

๐Ÿ”ฆ The Right Cutteray for Carbon

The starter Cutteray won't get you far. The Cutteray Mk2 is the first tool that mines carbon. Its in-game description reads "Cutteray capable of mining carbon." Mining values compared:

ToolCarbonIronRecipe
Cutteray Mk245%48%10 Iron Ingot, 7 EMF Generator
Cutteray Mk360%72%15 Steel Ingot, 10 EMF Generator, 10 Cobalt Paste, 5 Ray Amplifier, 90 water
Buggy Cutteray Mk3112%135%30 Steel Ingot, 25 Particle Capacitor, 17 Cobalt Paste, 10 Ray Amplifier, 200 water

You can craft the Mk2 in the Fabricator or the Survival Fabricator. If you're short on EMF Generators, the database says Dr. Shaffat and Phrakk sell it for 2,600 Solaris. The Mk3 costs 11,000 there.

Our own math on the order: going from Mk2 to Mk3 gets you a third more carbon per mining pass (60 instead of 45). The buggy attachment sits at about two and a half times the Mk2. This assumes efficiency converts linearly into yield, which is an assumption. Still, the conclusion is clear: your first 15 ingots go into the Cutteray Mk3, and after that the buggy with Cutteray and storage pays off.

๐Ÿงฎ What a Steel Build-Out Really Costs

For 100 ingots, you need these materials depending on the refinery (our own math from the database recipes, Iron Ingots included):

RefineryCarbon OreIron OreWaterPure run time
Small4005007,50025 min
Medium3004007,50018 min 20 s
Large2003007,50013 min 20 s

The catch: the Medium Ore Refinery itself costs 125 Steel Ingots, plus 45 Cobalt Paste and 35 Complex Machinery. It also only unlocks in the aluminum section of the building research tree. So you'll inevitably make those 125 ingots in the small station. That's 500 Carbon Ore, 625 Iron Ore and 9,375 water.

Is it worth it? Once the medium station is up, you save 100 Carbon Ore and 100 Iron Ore per 100 ingots. After roughly 500 more ingots, it has earned back its own Carbon Ore. If you only build a buggy and tools, you can skip it. If you're moving on to aluminum, you need it anyway.

A tip for your water supply: according to the Hotfix 1.5.3.5 patch notes, fabricators and refineries sometimes didn't detect water in the base. That's fixed. How to build up your supply is covered in our water guide.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ What You Need Dune Awakening Steel For

The database counts 98 recipes that contain Steel Ingots. Most of them are tier 3. The entry point is the steel section of the building research tree, which opens once you've spent 100 Intel in total. It includes the Survival Fabricator, Vehicle Fabricator, Weapons Fabricator, Garment Fabricator, Cutteray Mk3, Power Pack Mk3 and the omnidirectional wind turbine.

Medium Ore Refinery (building)125Construction tool
Cutteray Mk315Survival Fabricator
Holtzman Shield Mk318Survival Fabricator
Filter Extractor Mk314Survival Fabricator
Buggy Mk3, complete150Vehicle Fabricator

On top of that come weapons like the Artisan versions of the Kindjal, sword and Maula Pistol, armor like Karak's set, and every tier 3 buggy part. The number for the full buggy comes from our buggy guide (chassis, hull, tail, engine, PSU and four treads).

A side quest in Jabal Eifrit and the Hagga Rift gives you a natural thread to follow. It has you research and build the Survival Fabricator, Vehicle Fabricator, Weapons Fabricator and Garment Fabricator one after another, plus a Holtzman Shield Mk3, a Mk3 sandbike booster and an Artisan Kindjal. Work through it and you'll quickly see why you can never make enough ingots. Survival Fabricator, Cutteray Mk3, Holtzman Shield Mk3 and one buggy in Dune Awakening already add up to 223 Steel Ingots, without the refinery.

๐Ÿ”— The Metal Ladder: What Comes After Steel

After steel comes aluminum, which you can mine with the Cutteray Mk3 (36 percent per the database). Then comes Duraluminum from Jasmium Crystals, and finally Plastanium. Every tier needs a better Cutteray, more water and bigger refineries. Recipes and locations are in our guides to Duraluminum and Plastanium.

๐Ÿ’ก Dune Awakening Steel FAQ

Where do I make Dune Awakening steel?

In any Ore Refinery: small, medium or large. The bigger the station, the less Carbon Ore one ingot needs.

Which Cutteray mines Carbon Ore?

Starting with the Cutteray Mk2 at 45 percent efficiency. The Mk3 reaches 60 percent, the Buggy Cutteray Mk3 even 112 percent.

Is there carbon in southern Hagga Basin?

Going by everything the community has documented, no. The game itself points to Jabal Eifrit as the source for carbon in large amounts in a quest.

Can I buy Steel Ingots?

The database doesn't list any vendor selling them, only vendors that buy them. So you have to make them yourself. Carbon Ore, on the other hand, is sold by five vendors.

How much water does one Steel Ingot cost?

50 water for the ingot itself, plus 25 for the Iron Ingot. That's 75 water in total, the same in every refinery.

Is the Medium Ore Refinery worth it just for steel?

Not really. It costs 125 ingots and saves one Carbon Ore per ingot. Its real value only shows at the aluminum tier.

Checked against Dune Awakening Update 1.5 (live since September 17, 2026) as of October 2026, latest Hotfix 1.5.3.7 from October 9, 2026. The official patch notes for Hotfixes 1.5.3.1 through 1.5.3.7 list no changes to steel, Carbon Ore or Ore Refinery recipes.

Recipes, efficiency values, vendors, research sections and quest text come from the database dune.gaming.tools (read from the game files). The locations come from community guides by Beebom and Sportskeeda and aren't confirmed by Funcom. All cost calculations are our own.
