You build an Enshrouded water well at the Carpenter once you've brought back the Masonry Tools, and it gives you a supply of water to draw from. If you want flowing water for a pond, a ditch or a rice field, you don't need a well at all, but a water dispenser, which the game counts as a water source.
This guide covers what the water builds do in version 1.0, which craftsperson makes what and how many water sources each Flame level allows.
๐ง Enshrouded water well or water source: the difference
Since the "Wake of the Water" update from November 10, 2025, water in Enshrouded is fully simulated, Keen Games says: it flows, pools and can be redirected. For your base, there are two kinds of water builds:
- Storage: The two wells and the Water Barrel store water that you take out with a water pouch, a Watering Can or the Portable Water Pump. Workshops pull it with a button press.
- Flowing water: A water dispenser, per its item text, "will dispense water endlessly until it is submerged." It fills basins and ditches in the world.
The game data database enshrouded.th.gl calls the Enshrouded water well an almost endless source of water. The "Water source capacity" limit on the Flame levels applies to the dispensers, though: in the patch notes for 0.9.0.2, Keen Games writes that bases on the highest Flame level allow up to 50 water dispensers.
๐ชฃ Building an Enshrouded water well at the Carpenter
The Carpenter makes both versions of the Enshrouded water well. First you need the Carpenter's quest "Finding Masonry Tools": according to th.gl, the tools are in an excavation camp at the Pillars of Creation, and the recommended level is 15. Where the Carpenter is waiting is in our Enshrouded craftspeople guide.
| Build | Craftsperson | Recipe per th.gl (1.0) | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water Well | Carpenter | 20 Linen, 100 Revelwood Stone, 1 Wooden Bucket | storage to draw from |
| Improved Water Well | Carpenter | 20 Linen, 100 Limestone, 1 Wooden Bucket, 2 Bronze Bars | reaches groundwater faster, per its description |
| Wooden Bucket | Carpenter | 2 Wood Planks, 1 Metal Sheets, 1 Charcoal | ingredient for both wells |
| Water Barrel | Carpenter | 4 Wood Planks, 2 Copper Bars, 1 Charcoal | collects rainwater |
Older databases from Early Access list different ingredients for the improved Enshrouded water well, like Sandstone and Iron Bars instead of Limestone and Bronze Bars. What counts is what the Carpenter shows you in the game.
Keen Games doesn't say how much water an Enshrouded water well holds. The English community wiki says the basic well generates up to 12 water, you collect 5 at a time, and then it refills over time. According to patch 0.9.0.2, a freshly placed well starts empty, so plan for some waiting time.
๐ข๏ธ The Water Barrel as a rain barrel
Unlike an Enshrouded water well, the Water Barrel fills with rainwater that you can use for recipes, ponds or irrigation, according to the official patch notes. The community wiki adds that rain itself doesn't raise the water level of ponds. Only the barrels fill up.
๐ฐ Building a water source: the dispensers
If you want a water source instead of an Enshrouded water well, you craft a water dispenser at the Workbench. According to th.gl, no craftsperson is needed. Per patch 0.9.0.2, the recipes unlock in the Nomad Highlands crafting tier. Before that, they only came in the Kindlewastes.
| Water dispenser | Recipe per th.gl | Station |
|---|---|---|
| Metal Water Dispenser I | 1 Metal Scraps, 3 Tin Bars | Workbench |
| Metal Water Dispenser II | 8 Archaic Shards | Workbench |
| Stone Water Dispenser | 40 Shell Limestone, 4 Steel Bars, 8 Iron Dust | Workbench |
All three share the same description. According to the community wiki, you attach the dispenser to a block surface, rock or dirt included, and the water runs out of the spout at the bottom. Since patch 0.9.0.2, you can switch dispensers and drains on and off. Drains only get that switch if you place them after that patch, so rebuild older ones.
๐ Water sources per Flame level
How many dispensers fit in one base depends on the Flame level. The values come from the Flame level pages on th.gl:
| Flame level | Region | Water source capacity |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Springlands | 1 |
| 3 | Revelwood | 1 |
| 4 | Nomad Highlands | 5 |
| 5 | Kindlewastes | 10 |
| 6 | Albaneve Summits | 20 |
| 7 | Albaneve Summits | 30 |
| 8 | Veilwater Basin | 40 |
| 9 to 11 | Veilwater Basin, Cinder's Cradle | 50 |
Our take: at Flame level 4, the limit jumps fivefold from 1 to 5, right when the recipes unlock. At level 9 it caps at 50, and levels 10 and 11 add no more dispensers. th.gl doesn't list a value for level 1.
๐งฎ What 50 water sources cost
If you want to max out the limit, the bill depends a lot on the model. Based on the th.gl recipes, we worked out what 50 dispensers need:
- Metal Water Dispenser I: 50 Metal Scraps and 150 Tin Bars
- Metal Water Dispenser II: 400 Archaic Shards
- Stone Water Dispenser: 2,000 Shell Limestone, 200 Steel Bars and 400 Iron Dust. The Steel Bars alone take 10 runs at the Blast Furnace with 200 Iron Ore and 400 Coal in total.
For ponds and ditches, the cheap metal model is enough, and more dispensers are rarely better.
๐ How water flows in Enshrouded
The physics details come from the English community wiki (January 2026, before "Forging the Path"). According to it, water climbs back up in U-bends, splits at junctions and spreads with a delay.
According to the wiki, a dispenser puts out 36 blocks per second, or 4.5 cubic meters, if it hangs at least 2 blocks above the ground. Right above the ground it flows slower. Our math with that value: a rice field of 8 by 8 meters and half a meter deep holds 32 cubic meters and would be full in just over 7 seconds. Whether that still holds in 1.0 isn't confirmed.
How far the water gets depends on the ground. According to the community wiki:
- Built stone: absorbs nothing, ideal for basins
- Soil: absorbs very little, one dispenser reaches more than 100 blocks
- Mud: fully absorbs flowing water
- The Shroud: makes water vanish fast
Since patch 0.9.0.2, water drains away much more slowly on soil, sand and dirt, Keen says. If you used to place lots of dispensers to fight the seepage, your basins will now overflow. Keen's advice: remove the extra dispensers and lower the rest.
With "Forging the Path" in April 2026, water flows much further on completely flat surfaces, and dispensers no longer switch off when no player is nearby. Keen warns in the same patch notes that existing builds may need additional drains because of this.
๐ณ๏ธ Drains, irrigation gates and water barriers
If you build basins, you need drains so they don't overflow. According to the item text, a drain "will remove any water above it." They come as floor and wall drains. Since "Forging the Path," floor drains drain all water that touches them, per the patch notes. The community wiki explains that the height of the drain caps the water level.
| Part | Recipe per th.gl | Crafted at |
|---|---|---|
| Metal Floor Drain I and the matching wall drain | 2 Iron Bars | Workbench |
| Metal floor drain, tier II | 10 Archaic Shards | Workbench |
| Metal wall drain, tier II | 8 Archaic Shards | Workbench |
| Irrigation Gate Small | 4 Wood Planks, 4 Tropical Wood, 8 Nails, 8 Paper Reed | Carpenter |
| Irrigation Gate Large | 8 Wood Planks, 8 Tropical Wood, 12 Nails, 12 Paper Reed | Carpenter |
| Water Barrier Wall and Water Barrier Ground | 10 Shell Limestone, 2 Gold Bars | Carpenter |
The Stone Floor Drain and Stone Wall Drain are made from Stone. You lower or raise an irrigation gate to control the flow. The water barrier keeps water out, for example for dry rooms underwater. For doors, Keen says there's "no general rule" on whether they block water. Test every door before you run channels through your house.
๐พ Irrigation for your fields in Enshrouded
Regular beds don't need watering, so not every farm needs an Enshrouded water well. Water is needed for the Seedbed as a recipe ingredient and for plants like rice, which have to stand in water according to the "Wake of the Water" patch notes. You dig ditches with the rake, whose depth you can adjust. Recipes for the Seedbed, Farm Soil and rice seedlings are in our Enshrouded farming guide.
Irrigation gates split the water from one dispenser across several beds, and a drain at the end stops overflow. Since "Wake of the Water," workshops with water recipes pull their water from a nearby well with a button press. So put your Enshrouded water well right next to the Seedbed.
โ๏ธ Water wheel, pump and Watering Can
The Alchemist crafts the small and large water wheels. According to th.gl, they power a Mill when they stand partly in water and close to it. You only get the Mill after the Alchemist quest "Obtaining A Mill" in Riverreach in Veilwater Basin.
The Portable Water Pump (Blacksmith: 2 Bronze Bars, 1 Leather, 4 Wood Planks) adds or removes water in your base. The Watering Can also comes from the Blacksmith. You refill both at an Enshrouded water well or at lakes.
๐ Version 1.0: removing water and known bugs
If things get out of hand, the Flame Altar helps. Since "Wake of the Water," it can remove all simulated water in a base with one button press. The 1.0.0.0 changelog from October 14, 2026, lists fixes for cases where water acted "in inconsistent or incorrect ways" and better water simulation performance.
Hotfixes 1.0.0.2 and 1.0.0.3 fix crashes in the water simulation. Hotfix 1.0.0.3 from October 21 adds a catch for old saves whose Flame Altar wasn't placed in the voxel grid: the water of that base can't be loaded and has to be re-added. More on the altar is in our Enshrouded base building guide.
โ Enshrouded water well FAQ
Where can I build an Enshrouded water well?
At the Carpenter, after you've brought back the Masonry Tools. You place it inside the build area of a Flame Altar.
Why doesn't my well fill a pond?
Because an Enshrouded water well only holds water to draw from. Flowing water comes from a water dispenser, which you craft at the Workbench.
How many water sources can I build?
According to th.gl, one up to Flame level 3, then 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40, and from Flame level 9 a maximum of 50 per base. Each level is listed in our Flame Altar levels guide.
Is the Improved Water Well worth it?
According to its description, it reaches groundwater faster than the basic Enshrouded water well. It costs Limestone and 2 Bronze Bars instead of Revelwood Stone.
Does an Elixir Well have anything to do with water?
No. Elixir Wells are quest locations for the Flame and the Blacksmith, not a water build for your base.
My basin overflows. What do I do?
Keen says to remove extra dispensers, lower the rest or add drains. As a last resort, the Flame Altar removes all water in the base.
