Dune Awakening Update 1.5: Spice Melange Removed from Build Costs

Dune Awakening Update 1.5: Spice Melange Removed from Build Costs

Short answer: With Update 1.5, Funcom removed Spice Melange from the build costs of six endgame placeables in Dune Awakening, including all four Advanced Fabricators, the Medium Chemical Refinery and the Augmentation Station. The change has been live on all platforms, PC included, since September 17, 2026 with version 1.5.3.0. The current live hotfix is 1.5.3.7 from October 9, 2026.

For solo players, Dune Awakening Update 1.5 is the biggest balance change since launch. If you play alone or as a duo, the endgame rarely stopped you in combat. It stopped you at the Melange wall in front of the workbench. That wall is gone.

๐Ÿ“ฆ These six buildings no longer cost Spice Melange

Funcom names the affected placeables in the Update 1.5 patch notes. It's exactly these six, no others:

BuildingWhat you need it forMelange before 1.5
Advanced Garment FabricatorAdvanced armor and stillsuits45
Advanced Survival FabricatorTop-tier survival gear and consumables45
Advanced Vehicle FabricatorTop-tier vehicle modules45
Advanced Weapons FabricatorTop-tier weapons45
Medium Chemical RefineryChemical intermediates in larger batches35
Augmentation StationApplying augmentations to items15

A note on the numbers: Funcom doesn't list any amounts in the patch notes. They only say these placeables "no longer require Spice Melange in their construction costs". The Melange values in the table come from the community databases awakening.wiki and dune.gaming.tools, which match for all six buildings. They are not officially confirmed. Treat them as a solid estimate, not a patch note.

๐Ÿ’ก What the change actually saves you: the math

If you build the full endgame set of these six buildings once, the community values add up to 230 Spice Melange. And you don't mine Melange, you refine it.

The conversion rate depends on the refinery size, according to the game data on dune.gaming.tools (data version 1.5.3.6): the Spice Refinery needs 100 Spice Sand per Spice Melange, the Medium Spice Refinery 75:1 and the Large Spice Refinery 50:1. For 230 Melange, that works out to:

ItemAmount
Spice Melange for all six buildings230
Spice Sand in the Spice Refinery (100:1)23,000
Spice Sand in the Medium Spice Refinery (75:1)17,250
Spice Sand in the Large Spice Refinery (50:1)11,500
Water in the Spice Refinery (750 mL per 100 Spice Sand)about 172,500 mL
Pure refining time in the Spice Refinery (180 s per Melange)over 11 hours

That's the real point. The 230 Melange were never the problem. The 11,500 to 23,000 Spice Sand behind them were, depending on the refinery. You only get that much from spice fields that pull in a sandworm. For a twelve-person guild, that's an afternoon. For a solo player, it's a weekend project with an ornithopter, water logistics and a worm on your tail. How to farm Spice Sand efficiently is in our spice farming guide.

Since 1.5 you skip that whole block if all you want is the workbenches. Melange still matters for other things, such as trading and as a base for fuel. But it no longer guards the door to your endgame workshop.

โš ๏ธ Why this is aimed at solo players

Funcom says the Melange cut in Dune Awakening Update 1.5 is meant to make the endgame more accessible for solo players. That fits the rest of 1.5: the patch adds a real single player mode, and in single player the game now simulates the Landsraad on its own. The patch notes put it this way: "The Landsraad simulates other guilds to ensure a dynamic and believable Landsraad competition that progresses even without player participation."

Without these two changes, solo mode would have been a dead end: no guild access to large spice operations, no Landsraad competition, but full Melange build costs. If you want to start solo, the basics are in the single player guide.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ What else is in Dune Awakening Update 1.5

  • Cheaper taxis: 500 Solaris to the social hubs, 150 Solaris to tradeposts.
  • Medium Storage Container: volume raised from 3,500 to 4,000.
  • Difficulty rework: the hard scaling now only starts at difficulty 30 with +1,750% health and damage (previously roughly +1,700% already applied at difficulty 20), and each level above adds another 50%. In overland dungeon maps, Grade 3 items and augmentations no longer drop above difficulty 20, Grade 4 drops less often from difficulty 27, and Grade 5 drops from difficulty 20, but less often than before. Details in the Grade 5 farming guide.
  • Enemy balance: Assault enemies lose 15% health, Plastanium-tier enemies deal about 20% less melee damage. The parry window for swords, daggers and dual blades goes from 0.25 to 0.33 seconds, and a successful parry returns 10 stamina. Heavy melee attacks now do the same damage as shield-penetrating attacks.
  • Cheaper Plastanium tier: crafting and building costs for Plastanium tier items, including grades 1 to 3, drop by roughly 10 to 25 percent depending on the item.
  • Character-centric system: a new main menu with a character tab, and several characters per account. According to Funcom, characters from official servers can be played on any official server and can move to private and self-hosted servers, but not back. Funcom cites the integrity of the official servers. Single player characters stay in single player mode; backed-up bases and vehicles come along on a transfer.
  • Other changes: Heavy Metal Blade Coating is now a Grade 3+ augmentation; Solido Replicator limits are 20 per player, 10 per base, 20 per bank and 10 per vehicle; Crippling Strike, Deflection, Compel, Stop, Stunner and Weirding Step have three ranks; shield damage in PvP drops by 33%; the Base Reconstruction Tool has no cooldown in the southern Hagga Basin; and on Steam the Funcom Launcher is gone.

The one-way character transfer is where frustration starts later. Once you move your main character to your own server, it stays there. If you're thinking about your own server anyway, read the server transfer guide and the base building guide first and think the move through.

Between June 24 and the release of Dune Awakening Update 1.5 on September 17, almost three months passed without a new feature update. Live was still maintained: five hotfixes from 1.4.10.1 to 1.4.10.5 fixed bugs without changing content or recipes. That long gap is unusual for Dune Awakening. The reason was the console release, which used 1.5 as its base build. Which editions got in early is covered in our editions guide.

๐ŸŽฏ What you should do now

  • Stop hoarding Melange for the six buildings. Since 1.5 you build them without it, which saves 15 to 45 Melange per building.
  • Keep collecting Melange anyway if you trade it or produce fuel. Nothing changes there.
  • Shift your building resources: Plastanium, Silicone Blocks and Complex Machinery are still due for all six buildings. The patch notes don't say whether the general Plastanium tier cost reduction also applies to these buildings, so check the build costs in game.
  • Set your difficulty with the 1.5 rules in mind. The new scaling has been live since September 17; details in the Grade 5 guide.

โ“ Frequently asked questions about Update 1.5

When did Update 1.5 go live?

On September 17, 2026, on all platforms, PC included. The current live hotfix is 1.5.3.7 from October 9, 2026. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Deluxe and Ultimate buyers played in Early Access from September 17, and the regular console launch followed on September 22, 2026.

Which buildings no longer cost Spice Melange?

Advanced Garment Fabricator, Advanced Survival Fabricator, Advanced Vehicle Fabricator, Advanced Weapons Fabricator, Medium Chemical Refinery and Augmentation Station. No other buildings are affected.

Does this make Spice Melange worthless?

No. It only drops out of the build costs for these six placeables. As a trade good and in other recipes, Melange stays relevant.

How much Spice Sand does the change save me?

Based on community values of 230 Melange for all six buildings: 23,000 Spice Sand in the basic Spice Refinery, 17,250 in the Medium and 11,500 in the Large Spice Refinery.

What happened between 1.4 and 1.5?

After feature update 1.4.10.0 on June 24, 2026, five hotfixes followed: 1.4.10.1 (July 1), 1.4.10.2 (July 3), 1.4.10.3 (July 14), 1.4.10.4 (July 23) and 1.4.10.5 (August 12). None of them added content. The five new Landsraad missions (the mission system itself has existed since Chapter 3), the 30-second log-off time in the Deep Desert and the 20% lower boss health for four players come from 1.4.10.0; Update 1.5 further reduces bonus boss health for groups of three to four players.

Can I move my character from my own server back to official servers?

No. Transfers only go one way: from official servers to private or self-hosted servers, not back.
