Space Engineers 2 Roadmap: Combat NPCs in October, Co-op in 2027

The Space Engineers 2 roadmap no longer uses VS numbers, only update names. Since October 19, 2026, "Hostile Encounters" with the first combat NPCs has been live. Four-player co-op, originally planned together with the NPCs for November/December 2026, has been split off and is now planned for early 2027. Planet-wide water follows in 2027. For you that means: the enemies are already here, co-op comes next, big oceans after that.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ The Space Engineers 2 roadmap at a glance

Keen doesn't ship classic patches. It delivers large, self-contained themed packages. Until July 2026 these stages had numbers like VS2.3 ("Vertical Slice"). On August 13, 2026, studio founder Marek Rosa dropped that numbering: "We decided not to use Vertical Slice numbering for our releases." Since then every update is named after what it brings, and the roadmap only lists names and dates.

โš”๏ธ Hostile Encounters: combat NPCs since October 19

The original roadmap had one update for NPCs and Cooperative Multiplayer in November/December 2026. Keen split it in two. In its official Steam announcement from October 8, 2026, Keen explains that the NPC systems "reached a point where they were ready to go into players' hands sooner", so the team "decided to separate the two and release Combat NPCs early."

"Hostile Encounters" released on Monday, October 19, 2026, at 5 PM UTC, with a release livestream on Twitch and YouTube. Keen's patch notes "Space Engineers 2 Alpha: Hostile Encounters" open with "Hostile Encounters is here", and hotfixes followed on October 20 and 22. According to the announcement, it brings:

  • Combat NPCs for the first time: the Renegades and the heavier Boatmen
  • An expanded Almagest System with improved Locations and Contracts
  • Overhauled ores and new Verdure flora
  • Updated lighting and new combat effects
  • New blocks: Cables, Pipes, Armor Slabs, Interior Turrets and decorative props

If you're playing a quiet survival world, this update gives you resistance for the first time. Interior Turrets and armor matter once something shoots back, so save your best ships as blueprints. Our blueprint guide shows how, and the ores guide is a good reference to compare against the overhauled ores.

๐Ÿš€ Four-player co-op: now early 2027

Co-op is still coming, just later. Keen's wording from October 8: "We are actively developing 4-player co-op (player-hosted sessions) for Space Engineers 2, currently planned for early 2027."

What matters is what this co-op is not. Keen already set the scope in July 2026: it starts with player hosting, not dedicated servers. Big server worlds with double-digit player counts are not part of this first co-op update and come later. If you're used to 16-player servers from the first game, adjust your expectations. Four players in a world opened by the host is the starting point, not the end goal.

Until then, Space Engineers 2 stays a single-player game.

๐Ÿ’ง Why water slipped back

The most interesting part of the Space Engineers 2 roadmap is not what was added but the order that changed. Water was originally planned as the next big step after the survival foundations. It ran under the number VS3, ahead of the co-op update VS4. In his dev diary from June 11, 2026, Rosa wrote that Keen was "moving it after VS4". Since Keen dropped the numbers, the roadmap only shows names, and "Water" simply sits behind "Cooperative Multiplayer".

The reason is technical. Keen describes water as one of the most technically demanding systems being built for Space Engineers 2. The plan is planet-wide volumetric water with oceans, rivers and lakes, plus boats and submarines. Not a texture trick, but real volume that has to work with grids, buoyancy and destruction. Instead of waiting for it, Keen pulled the further-along features forward.

A detail many summaries skip: in the July update notes, Keen left open that water might ship as part of a later major update. Behind water, the official roadmap page only has one more entry, "Full Multiplayer, Storyline and Campaign", and it has no date at all. If you read about a fixed "VS5" somewhere: Keen dropped that numbering in August 2026.

โš ๏ธ What water could mean for your planet bases

Whether the water update requires a new save is something Keen has not stated in the official sources we checked (roadmap, Steam page, dev diaries). What is certain: for earlier updates like VS2.3, Keen said some content needs a new game. With a change this deep to the terrain, caution makes sense.

For your current world, that means:

  • Bases and stations on planets could be affected by the water update, because oceans, rivers and lakes change the terrain.
  • Blueprints are your insurance. Anything you want to keep belongs in a blueprint, ideally uploaded to the Workshop. Ships and modules survive a wipe, grown worlds don't.
  • Big terraforming projects on planet surfaces may have a limited shelf life. If you do one anyway, do it on purpose, not by accident.
  • Smaller updates can be affected too. Some features from the July update "Drive, Automate and Detonate" only showed up in freshly started worlds.

If you still want to build long-term, orbital stations and asteroid setups are a safer bet than planet bases, since water mainly hits surfaces. For that, see our ship building guide and the blocks overview.

๐Ÿ“… Early Access until the end of 2027: what that means for the dates

On the Steam page, Keen says "approximately three years (end of 2027)" for Early Access. Hold that against the roadmap: combat NPCs in October 2026, co-op in early 2027, water sometime in 2027, then the final stage with full multiplayer, story and campaign. That's a very full schedule for the time left.

So here is the honest take: roadmap dates for an alpha are intentions, not promises. The co-op date itself is the proof. In August it said November/December 2026. In October it says early 2027. The gaps between past updates point the same way: almost four months between the planet update (December 2025) and mechanical blocks (March 2026), and another three and a half to the July update. And "2027" without a month is the vaguest date on the whole roadmap.

The only thing you can plan with is what's actually there, and since October 19 that includes Hostile Encounters. New to the game? Start with the Space Engineers 2 beginner's guide.

๐Ÿ’ก Frequently Asked Questions about the Space Engineers 2 Roadmap

When is multiplayer coming to Space Engineers 2?

Four-player co-op is currently planned for early 2027, according to Keen's announcement from October 8, 2026. It starts with player-hosted sessions. Dedicated servers come later.

When do NPCs come to Space Engineers 2?

The first combat NPCs have been in the game since "Hostile Encounters". The update released on October 19, 2026. Keen split them off from the co-op update because they were ready earlier.

Why does co-op come before water?

Because Keen swapped the order. Water was originally the next big step after the survival foundations, but it turned out to be more technically demanding than expected. Keen moved the further-along features forward.

Do I have to start over for the water update?

Keen hasn't said yet. Since earlier updates already needed a new game for some content, save everything you want to keep as a blueprint before then.

Are there still VS numbers for the updates?

No. Marek Rosa dropped the Vertical Slice numbering on August 13, 2026, and every update has a name since then. After water, only the undated "Full Multiplayer, Storyline and Campaign" stage follows.

When does Space Engineers 2 leave Early Access?

Keen plans about three years of Early Access and gives the end of 2027 as a rough frame on Steam. There is no fixed date for the full release.

As of October 31, 2026, after the release of "Hostile Encounters". Sources: the official Space Engineers 2 roadmap (2.spaceengineersgame.com), Marek Rosa's dev diaries from June 11 and August 13, 2026 (end of VS numbering), Keen's Steam announcement from October 8, 2026 (Hostile Encounters date, co-op moved to early 2027), the July update notes, the Steam store page, and Keen's patch notes "Space Engineers 2 Alpha: Hostile Encounters" on support.keenswh.com with the hotfixes from October 20 and 22, 2026. Alpha roadmap dates can change at any time.
