- โ FAQ about the Dune Awakening homeworld, caste and mentor
Your Dune Awakening homeworld gives you a dialogue trait and a unique emote, but no stat bonus. The same goes for your caste. Only the mentor matters for gameplay at character creation, because it sets your starting class and your first ability.
All three choices are permanent, so it's worth a close look before you hit "Next". This guide shows what each homeworld, each caste and each mentor in Dune Awakening really does, which mentor fits which playstyle and what you can still change later.
๐งฌ Character creation in Dune Awakening at a glance
After appearance and name come three steps that set your background: Homeworld, Caste and Mentor.
| Step | Options | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Homeworld | Giedi Prime, Chusuk, Caladan, Kaitain, Ix | Dialogue trait and an emote |
| Caste | Bondsman, Na-Familia, Pyon | Dialogue trait |
| Mentor | Swordmaster, Bene Gesserit Acolyte, Mentat, Trooper | Starting class, starting ability, first skill tree |
GamesRadar sums it up plainly: homeworld and caste occasionally open extra dialogue options but barely affect gameplay. The mentor, according to the same article, decides your starting ability and the skill tree you get access to first.
๐ Dune Awakening homeworld: all five planets
You can pick from five planets. Each Dune Awakening homeworld adds a dialogue trait and unlocks an emote that only players from that origin have. The assignments match across the community wiki awakening.wiki, GamesRadar and Method.gg.
| Homeworld | Background | Dialogue trait | Emote |
|---|---|---|---|
| Giedi Prime | Industrial volcanic world, seat of House Harkonnen | Deception | Harkonnen Curse |
| Chusuk | World of culture | Cultured | Chusuk Music |
| Caladan | Ocean world of House Atreides | Honorable | Atreides Salute |
| Kaitain | Imperial capital, House Corrino | Political | Kaitain Bow |
| Ix | Technology world of the Ixians | Technologist | Ixian Secret |
Two details help with the choice. First, you don't have to pick the planet whose preset you used for your appearance. Second, your faction doesn't depend on your homeworld: you start without one and only choose between Atreides and Harkonnen later at The Anvil tradepost. How that works is in the faction guide. Picking Caladan doesn't make you an Atreides.
๐๏ธ The three castes and the conflict between sources
Your caste describes your social standing in the Imperium. It also comes with a dialogue trait and nothing else. According to awakening.wiki and Method, the traits are Nobility (Na-Familia), Bondsman and Pyon.
| Caste | In-game description (per awakening.wiki) | Dialogue trait |
|---|---|---|
| Na-Familia | A caste reserved for essential members of a noble household or retinue | Nobility |
| Bondsman | The educated caste that serves the Great Houses and administers Imperial bureaucracy | Bondsman |
| Pyon | The vast peasant labor force that drives the Imperial engine | Pyon |
This is where sources disagree. GamesRadar ranks Bondsman as the peasant class, Na-Familia as middle class and Pyon as aristocracy. Method.gg puts Bondsman as upper class, Na-Familia as middle class and Pyon as working class. The community wikis quote the in-game descriptions instead and agree with each other. For gameplay it doesn't matter, since no caste changes stats. For roleplay, we'd go with the wikis.
โ๏ธ Mentor: the only choice with gameplay weight
Your mentor is your starting class. There are four to choose from, and the Planetologist isn't one of them: according to press coverage, you unlock it only through its trainer.
| Mentor | Focus per GamesRadar | Starting ability |
|---|---|---|
| Swordmaster | Melee, aggressive | Knee Charge |
| Bene Gesserit Acolyte | Control, manipulation | Voice: Compel |
| Mentat | Recon, strategy, mobility | The Sentinel |
| Trooper | Offense, explosives | Shigawire Claw |
Here too there's a discrepancy: Method.gg lists Deflection as the Swordmaster's starting ability instead of Knee Charge. awakening.wiki and GamesRadar both list Knee Charge.
What the four abilities do is in the game database dune.gaming.tools. Knee Charge launches you at an enemy and staggers them hard. Compel uses the Voice to pull a distant target to you. The Sentinel deploys a hovering dart projector that covers a field of fire through motion detection. Shigawire Claw slings you along a wire in the direction you aim.
๐ฏ Which mentor fits which playstyle?
The following ratings come from community guides and aren't confirmed by Funcom. Method.gg rates the Trooper as beginner-friendly, the Swordmaster as easy to learn, the Bene Gesserit as hard to master and the Mentat as slow but rewarding.
- Trooper: for players who start solo and want some room for mistakes. Shigawire Claw is movement and counter in one.
- Swordmaster: for anyone who likes melee and wants to practice parrying. In PvP it counts as the strongest school, according to our builds guide.
- Bene Gesserit: for players who'd rather control enemies than charge them. Takes practice.
- Mentat: for ranged combat, recon and group play. Slower at first, strong with teammates.
One practical point that few guides mention comes from the German community wiki: the basic trainers for Bene Gesserit and Swordmaster sit in areas you can't reach early on. Our trainers guide confirms the locations: Pinnacle Station in Jabal Eifrit and Helius Gate in the Eastern Shield Wall. The Trooper and Planetologist trainers, on the other hand, are already in southern Hagga Basin.
That leads to simple math. Pick Trooper and you get a class you could learn early anyway. Pick Swordmaster or Bene Gesserit and you have a school right away that you'd otherwise have to travel far for. If you want to mix two classes early, this community advice says one of those two is the better start.
๐ What you can still change later
Homeworld, caste and starting mentor are fixed, according to Method.gg. That's less dramatic than it sounds, because two things can be adjusted afterwards.
Appearance at the clinic
You can change your appearance at any time at the clinics in the settlements. awakening.wiki lists 5,000 Solaris for it. Method.gg places the clinics in Arrakeen (Dr. Shaffat, across from the Landsraad vendors) and in Harko Village (Fleshshaper Phrakk, at the very back of the village next to the Swordmaster trainer) and also names 5,000 Solaris.
The trainer in Harko Village is the advanced Swordmaster trainer Seron Varlin; the basic trainer stands at Pinnacle Station, as described above. Sportskeeda, on the other hand, describes the change as free. Since Update 1.5, both clinics are marked on the compass, according to the official patch notes. If money is tight, the Solaris farming guide lists quick income.
More classes through trainers
Your starting class isn't a cage. Through the trainers you unlock the skill trees of every other school, including the Planetologist. The German community wiki puts it simply: you can learn all the other classes if you want to. Which combinations work is shown in the builds guide.
โ ๏ธ Myth: bonuses from homeworld or caste
In June 2025 a Steam discussion thread claimed Caladan gives 15 percent better water efficiency, Giedi Prime 20 percent faster crafting and Kaitain more reputation. The poster gave no proof, and several players contradicted it directly in the same thread. None of the sources we checked lists such a bonus. Pick your Dune Awakening homeworld based on taste.
More typical early mistakes are in our beginner tips, and every English guide is listed on the Dune Awakening hub.

English names of homeworlds, traits, emotes, castes, mentors and starting abilities come from the community wiki awakening.wiki (page "Character Customization"), ability descriptions from the database dune.gaming.tools, plus GamesRadar, Method.gg, Mein-MMO, Sportskeeda and the German community wiki duneawakeningwiki.de. Playstyle ratings, clinic prices and the caste ranking are community information and not officially confirmed by Funcom.
