Dune Awakening Best Faction: Atreides or Harkonnen, and How to Switch

Which is the Dune Awakening best faction? Neither, at least in combat. You choose between House Atreides and House Harkonnen through the journey "Join a House" at The Anvil. The choice changes your contracts, your guild options and your side in the Landsraad. Based on the patch notes and the game data, it does not change your combat stats.

New players, especially everyone who started on PS5 or Xbox, tend to get stuck at the same spot: the recruiter wants a decision and nobody tells you whether it's final. Short answer: you can switch faction once, and never again. This guide covers where you choose, what is actually different, and how the betrayal works step by step.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ When You Have to Pick a Faction in Dune Awakening

You start without a faction. The choice begins with the journey Join a House, which you pick up at The Anvil, a tradepost in the Eastern Vermillius Gap in the Hagga Basin.

The steps of the journey:

  • Talk to a House Atreides or House Harkonnen recruiter at The Anvil.
  • Take a contract from one of the recruiters, starting with The Missing Spy.
  • Prove yourself to at least one of the recruiters by completing contracts for your sponsor.
  • Choose a side. Only this step locks you in.

Each house has its own proving journey, and both recruiters want you to deal with the other one:

HouseRecruiterJourneyGoal
AtreidesLt. Anton TolliverA Test of LoyaltyTake out Levenbrech Kazmir
HarkonnenLevenbrech Maxim KazmirA Test of TreacheryBlackmail Lt. Tolliver

Until the "Choose a side" step, you can work for both recruiters and look at both houses before you commit. After that, the journey Climb the Ranks takes over: contracts for your sponsor, the officer who hands out your house work.

โš–๏ธ Atreides or Harkonnen: What Actually Differs

The two factions in Dune Awakening differ mainly in story, quest givers and looks. Neither the official patch notes nor the community databases list a damage, health or stamina bonus for either side. Picking a faction is not a build decision.

AreaWhat the choice changes
Contracts and quest giversAtreides line through Tolliver, Andrea Ganan and Thufir Hawat in Arrakeen. Harkonnen line through Kazmir, Simone von Konig and Piter de Vries in Harko Village
CosmeticsAccording to the community wiki you can get all cosmetics of both houses, but the other side's items cost double
GuildYou can only join a guild that is aligned with the same faction
LandsraadYour missions count for your side in the Landsraad competition
Combat statsNo documented difference

In practice: if you play with friends, the guild decides. If you play alone, pick whatever you like, based on armor style, story or which quest givers you'd rather spend time with. The combat school, which is what really shapes your abilities, is a separate system. The Swordmaster build shows what that looks like in practice.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Climbing the Ranks: Rank 0 to 20

After the choice you earn Faction Standing and climb through ranks. The community wiki describes two phases:

  • Rank 0 to 5: through regular contracts from your sponsor. Rank 5 needs 1,999 Faction Standing in total, according to the community wiki.
  • Rank 6 to 20: only through Landsraad missions. With Mnemonic Recollection each mission gives 75 Standing, and the daily cap is 375. Rank 20 needs 12,474 Standing in total, which works out to about 27 days at full pace according to the wiki's table.

method.gg names Rank 5 as the key threshold, because that's where the Landsraad opens up and with it the specializations. The community wiki awakening.wiki also lists Rank 5 (journey "The Art of Making Friends") as the requirement for Landsraad missions. The mission system with 20 ranks has existed since Chapter 3 (Update 1.3); the Update 1.5 announcement only sums it up. We don't have an official Funcom statement on the Rank 5 threshold. How the Landsraad works is covered in the Landsraad guide.

๐Ÿ”„ Switching Faction: The One-Time Betrayal

A switch runs through its own journey: Betray the Atreides or Betray the Harkonnen. The journey text is clear: while it is active, you make no progress with your current house. Finish the betrayal contract to climb the ranks of the other house instead.

Which betrayal contract you get depends on your current rank. Per the game database:

Your rankAtreides โ†’ Harkonnen: quest giverHarkonnen โ†’ Atreides: contract
Rank 2Levenbrech Maxim KazmirRestoring Lt. Tolliver's Honor, from Anton Tolliver
Rank 3Simone von KonigA Spy Among Spies, from Andrea Ganan
Rank 4 and higherPiter de Vries, Harko VillageA Betrayal Within a Betrayal, from Thufir Hawat in Arrakeen

For the direction to the Atreides, the database lists no rank of its own. The mapping follows from the counterparts on the other side. "Rank 4 and higher" also relies on player reports from Rank 5 characters.

On the way to the Atreides you get 200, 400 or 600 Standing with your new house when you finish, depending on the tier. The Harkonnen contracts only list XP and Solaris in the database. In the Rank 4 version for Atreides defectors, Piter de Vries sends you to Thufir Hawat with a forged report, so for a moment you play both sides against each other.

What stays and what goes after the switch:

  • No second switch. The community wiki and player reports agree: each character can change faction only once. Think it through before you defect.
  • Landsraad progress: reset, according to the community wiki.
  • Rank: player reports say you keep your rank in the new house. This is not officially confirmed.
  • Schematics: schematics you already bought stay with you, according to the same reports.
  • Guild: if your guild belongs to the old side, you're out.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ What Update 1.5 Fixed in the Faction Choice

The official patch notes for Update 1.5 (version 1.5.3.0, September 17, 2026) contain four fixes that hit exactly this flow:

  • Betrayal contracts could be abandoned from the contract menu, but they already blocked all progress in your current house from the moment you accepted them. Abandoning is no longer possible, and the betrayal journey card now carries an extra warning.
  • If you were affected, Funcom says to go back to the sponsor where you accepted the contract and accept it again to finish the betrayal.
  • The "Choose a side" step sometimes stayed open even though the choice was already made.
  • Players who had completed all journeys of their house were still stuck at Rank 4.

The takeaway for new players: don't accept a betrayal contract out of curiosity. Since 1.5 there is no way back through the menu.

๐Ÿง Does the Faction Matter in Single-Player?

Yes, just less. You still have to pick a faction solo. According to the patch notes, the Landsraad in single-player simulates other guilds so the competition keeps running without other players, with cycles adjusted for solo play. The guild question disappears, while contracts, ranks and your Landsraad side remain. How to tune the rest of solo mode is in the single-player settings guide.

๐Ÿ’ก Which Faction Should New Players Pick?

  • With friends: pick the same faction together and agree on it beforehand. Switching because of a guild costs you your only betrayal.
  • Solo: pick whatever you like. Combat stats don't depend on it, and the other side's cosmetics stay purchasable.
  • Decide before Rank 5: if you want to switch, do it before your Landsraad progress grows, because it gets reset.
  • Avoid betrayal contracts unless you really want to switch.

More typical early mistakes are collected in our beginner tips, and the Dune Awakening hub lists every English guide.

โ“ FAQ: Choosing a Faction in Dune Awakening

Where do I choose my faction in Dune Awakening?

At The Anvil tradepost in the Eastern Vermillius Gap, through the journey "Join a House". The recruiters there are Lt. Anton Tolliver (Atreides) and Levenbrech Maxim Kazmir (Harkonnen).

Can I change my faction later?

Once. Each character can switch once through a betrayal journey. A second switch is not possible.

Which faction is stronger in Dune Awakening?

Neither. Patch notes and databases show no combat bonuses for either side. The difference is story, quest givers, cosmetics and guild.

Can I abandon a betrayal contract?

Not since Update 1.5. Accepting it already blocks progress in your current house.

Do I lose my rank when I switch?

Player reports say no, the rank carries over. The community wiki says your Landsraad progress is reset, though.

Can I play with friends from the other house?

Not in the same guild, because a guild always belongs to one house. If you want to play together, pick the same faction.

As of October 11, 2026 (Update 1.5, current Hotfix 1.5.3.7 from October 9, 2026): checked against the official patch notes for Update 1.5 (version 1.5.3.0, September 17, 2026), quest data from dune.gaming.tools, and the community wiki awakening.wiki for rank thresholds and cosmetics rules. Rank carry-over and kept schematics are based on player reports and are not officially confirmed.
