Windrose Naval Combat 2026: Cannons, Boarding and Repairs

Windrose Naval Combat 2026: Cannons, Boarding and Repairs

Windrose naval combat comes down to three things: your position relative to the enemy's stern, leading your shots and the right repair kit in your ship slot. Wind still plays no role. Waves do.

This guide strictly separates what Kraken Express has officially confirmed from what comes from the Steam forums. Status: Early Access, version 0.10.0.9 from August 25, 2026. How you get a warship in the first place is covered in our Windrose ship building guide.

โš“ Three Batteries: Bow, Port and Starboard

Your ship doesn't fire as one unit. It fires from three separate gun groups: one at the bow and one each on port and starboard, each with its own reload timer. Several players on the official Steam forums report this consistently. Kraken Express hasn't published a breakdown.

The batteries are still confirmed indirectly: the patch notes for version 0.10.0.6 literally mention "interacting with a battery", and version 0.10.0.8 explicitly names "front cannons".

If you just sail in circles, you waste two thirds of your firepower. The community recommends turning your bow toward the target first, emptying the front cannons and then turning through so port and starboard come into the firing arc one after the other.

๐ŸŽฏ Aiming in Windrose Naval Combat: Lead Low

The most common mistake is aiming too high. Experienced players on the Steam forums describe it like this: at short range aim at the waterline, raise your aim as distance grows, and shoot where the target will be, not where it's going right now.

Rule of thumb: if the enemy sails away, aim higher. If it's coming toward you, aim shorter. If it's sailing parallel, lead ahead of its bow. Cannonballs tend to fly high, Chain Shot drops short, so you need to get closer for it. All of this is community experience, not officially confirmed.

๐ŸŒŠ No Wind, but Waves

Time to clear up a misconception that floats through many guides: wind direction currently doesn't affect your sailing. The official devblog from July 1, 2026 lists "wind influence on sailing" explicitly as something still being looked at for the Ashlands update, deliberately "fun and simple" rather than a hard simulation.

The press backs this up: PC Gamer says not to worry about wind direction, and MMORPG.com notes that you sail at a constant speed. Waves do matter. According to MMORPG.com, a wave coming at you slows your ship and gives you a boost on the way down. Behind a tall wave, enemy fire splashes harmlessly into the water.

โ›ต Maneuvers: Sail Levels and the Brake Trick

Speed works in fixed steps. Players describe a display in the lower left next to your speed with five marks: four forward levels and one for reverse. Half sails mean less speed but a much tighter turning circle.

That gives you the most important trick for Windrose naval combat: sails up for speed, sails down for the turn, sails back up as you accelerate out of it. Several users also describe the brake key as a handbrake that lets you whip the ship around and get your front cannons on target.

Against AI fleets, the forums recommend constantly changing course and speed, because the enemies get tangled up in each other. Two rules come up again and again: never let yourself get flanked from both sides at once, and take targets out one by one, starting with the smallest.

๐Ÿฉธ The Stern Is the Weak Spot, and Reliably So Since August 25

The area behind the enemy is the best position: there are usually no guns there, and the forums consider the stern the most vulnerable zone. Players recognize a stern hit by big yellow damage numbers, the kind that otherwise show up on critical hits.

The point hardly any guide mentions: for a long time this tactic simply didn't work. Only the official patch notes for version 0.10.0.9 from August 25, 2026 state that cannonballs now "correctly deal damage" to the stern as well as sails and hull. Older stern guides describe a mechanic that was broken at the time.

The history is documented: version 0.10.0.7 from June 25, 2026 only just restored the ability to damage sails at all. One bug that Kraken Express documented itself is still open: front cannons occasionally deal no damage despite a visible hit.

โš”๏ธ Boarding: Wait for the Crossed Swords

The Steam store page officially lists boarding as part of naval combat and frames sea fights as a choice between long-range cannon duels and close combat on deck. Kraken Express doesn't say more than that. The details below come from the Steam forums and from reviews.

The process according to the community: you shell the target until its hit points drop below a threshold. The ship is then disabled, a crossed-swords icon appears, and only then does the boarding prompt kick in. Several users explicitly warn against jumping over before that.

On deck you fight alongside your crew. The decks are cramped, and enemies keep spawning, sometimes behind you. There's dedicated crew gear for this: Boarding Party Gear is made at the Shipwright's Workshop according to the game data in the windrose.gaming.tools database, can be upgraded in tiers and raises your crew's strength when boarding. Fully upgraded, the crew handles most of the enemies according to the forums.

The risk is real: according to MMORPG.com, you can't set your respawn point on your ship. Die while boarding and the loot is gone too. Many forum users find the payout, some money and a few trade goods, too thin and prefer to sink ships instead.

๐Ÿ”ง Damage Repair: Kits on Board, Shipyard for the Rest

Repair kits don't go into your backpack inventory but into the ship's toolbar. According to the Steam forums you trigger them with keys 5 to 8, and the crew repairs while you sail. There's no official description of this key layout.

Standard kits work like a slow bandage and stop as soon as you take damage, so they're for the trip between two fights. According to the forums, the Combat Repair Kit keeps healing even under fire. The game data in the windrose.gaming.tools database also lists a Master Combat Repair Kit.

Two details save material. Don't interrupt a running standard kit with a combat kit, because that cancels the passive healing. And according to the forums, certain ship equipment protects repairs from being interrupted in naval combat. In the game data these parts are called Keelhold hull bracing (hull reinforcement) and Naval Tactics III: Stretch the Supply (battle order). Both are sold by the smugglers' provisioner in Port Royal. The effect is a forum claim.

You can't fix structural damage at sea, for that you need to go back to the Wharf. Even a sunk ship isn't lost: according to several forum users you restore it at the Wharf, which costs more than a normal repair but far less than building a new one. The cargo hold is kept.

๐Ÿ’ก Three Mistakes That Cost You Ships

  • Turning with full sails: the ship turns sluggishly and shows the enemy its broadside.
  • Using only one battery: if you don't alternate, you sit around waiting for reloads.
  • Boarding too early: without the crossed swords you jump onto a fully manned deck.

โ“ FAQ: Windrose Naval Combat

How does Windrose naval combat work in general?

You maneuver into firing position and shoot from three separate batteries at the bow, port and starboard. Once the enemy drops below a hit point threshold, it's disabled and can be boarded. The official Steam description frames this as a choice between long-range cannon fights and boarding.

Does wind matter in Windrose?

No. The official devblog from July 1, 2026 lists wind influence on sailing as something still being looked at for Ashlands. PC Gamer and MMORPG.com confirm that wind direction currently does nothing and you sail at a constant speed. Waves, on the other hand, affect your speed.

Where should I hit an enemy ship?

The stern. There are usually no guns there, and the community reports the highest damage numbers there. Note that only version 0.10.0.9 from August 25, 2026 makes sure stern hits deal damage correctly, according to the patch notes.

When can I board a ship?

Once the enemy ship is disabled. The Steam forums describe a crossed-swords icon as the signal, after which the boarding prompt appears. Several users say jumping over earlier gets you killed. Officially confirmed is only that boarding exists.

How do I repair my ship mid-fight?

With repair kits in the ship's toolbar, on keys 5 to 8 according to the forums. Standard kits stop under fire, the Combat Repair Kit keeps working. Structural damage can't be fixed at sea and needs the Wharf.

What happens when my ship sinks?

It isn't lost. Several forum users consistently report that you can restore it at the Wharf, which costs more than a normal repair but less than a new build. The cargo hold is kept. PC Gamer mentions low wood costs.

Officially checked against the Windrose Steam news feed: patch notes 0.10.0.6 to 0.10.0.9, the "Ashlands" devblog from July 1, 2026 and the Steam store page. Status: October 2026, game version 0.10.0.9; no newer patch had been released by October 15, 2026. There is no official Windrose wiki.

Officially confirmed: cannon fights and boarding as game content, the front cannons as their own gun group, the term battery, the damage fixes for stern, sails and hull in 0.10.0.9, the known front cannon bug from 0.10.0.8 and the fact that wind influence has only been looked at, not implemented. Community information, not officially confirmed: aiming tips, the three batteries with their own reload timers, sail levels and the brake trick, the crossed swords as boarding signal, key layout and effect of repair kits, and how restoring a sunk ship works.
