- โ FAQ: Windrose Tips for Beginners
Windrose tips for the start save you a lot of frustration. This pirate survival game drops you on an island with little explanation, and your first choices decide whether you build up calmly or keep starting over. In short: gather wood and plant fiber, make stone tools, place a bonfire as the heart of your base and craft a bigger bag right away.
This guide shows the right order for your first hour, the building system, the first real danger and the road to your own ship. Status: Early Access, version 0.10.0.9 from August 25, 2026.
๐ดโโ ๏ธ What Windrose Is
Windrose is a pirate survival game with base building and ship-to-ship combat. The developer is Kraken Express. The Steam store lists the publishers as "Kraken Express, Pocketpair Publishing (Japan)", so Pocketpair, the studio behind Palworld, is a publishing partner focused on Japan rather than the sole publisher. Early Access has been running on Steam and Epic since April 14, 2026.
It's pure PvE: no player combat and no raids on your base. You play solo or in co-op with up to eight people, though the developers recommend four for smooth performance.
๐ฅ Co-op: Difficulty Does Scale
One stubborn myth shows up in many guides: that Windrose doesn't scale with player count. That's not true. Enemy health and how fast enemies lose posture depend on the number of active players on the server. The value sits in the world settings, can be set between 0 and 200 percent and can be turned off completely.
According to a developer post on the official Steam forums, scaling only applies up to the fifth player. At the default value with five people, that's about 60 percent more health and roughly 30 percent more posture resistance. So co-op takes work off your hands but makes enemies tougher. If you want to build in peace, turn the slider down or to zero.
โฑ๏ธ Making the Most of Your First Hour
Before you build anything, do a full beach sweep of the starting island: collect coconuts for an early food buff and break down small pieces of wreckage for extra wood and your first nails. That front-loads resources many newcomers overlook.
After that, focus on the basics: wood and plant fiber. Tools, buildings and stations all come from those two. Craft a stone axe and a stone pickaxe as early as possible. You can get your first wood with your bare hands, but every minute with tools saves noticeable time.
๐ฅ Build Order: Bonfire, Then Tent
Your first building is the Bonfire. It creates a radius that defines your base area, and workbenches, chests and additions have to stand inside it. It also heals you passively outside of combat and feeds the comfort system. These details come from fan guides, not from official patch notes or the store page.
Important: according to consistent community reports, your respawn point isn't set by the Bonfire but by a tent or bed. With a tent you set the point by interacting with it, and a bed in your base can be marked as a respawn too. There's no official confirmation, so we treat this explicitly as community information. Still, build a tent early before you head far out.
Next come the workbench for the basic recipes and a storage chest for your overflowing inventory. Only after that is the smelter worth it.
๐ Right Away: A Bigger Bag
The most important early tip: build a bigger bag immediately. Windrose gives you very little space at the start, and you're full after the first few trees. According to the game data in the windrose.gaming.tools database, the Torn Sailcloth Bag is crafted at the workbench from two Coarse Fabric and one Rope. Its description calls it full of holes but fairly roomy, and it adds four extra slots.
Every minute without the bag is time wasted walking back and forth. Get it done before you set out to explore seriously.
๐ The Underrated Comfort System
Almost everyone overlooks one system: comfort. Put a roof over your base so the furniture underneath counts. Every piece of furniture in the roofed area raises comfort and extends the Rested buff, which among other things improves stamina regeneration. This is also fan guide information.
So the rule is: don't build big, build tight and furnished. A small, furnished shelter around the Bonfire beats a big, empty hall every time.
๐ The First Real Danger: Boars
Windrose isn't a game where you just mash attack. Combat has souls-like traits with dodging and a posture bar. According to consistent fan guides, your first lesson comes from boars: they take down an unprepared character fast, especially without armor and a weapon.
So hunt boars early for coarse hides, build the Armor and Clothing Workshop and craft a first melee weapon at the Weaponsmith Workshop, which costs 10 Wood and 5 Copper Ingots according to windrose.gaming.tools. The Anvil is only an upgrade you place next to it later. Also learn to dodge attacks instead of tanking them. How parrying and posture work is explained in our Windrose combat guide.
โต From Raft to Your First Real Ship
You don't get your first ship for free, which is a common misconception. You start with a simple raft. You get the ship design for your first real ship, the Ketch, from the quest "I Need a Bigger Boat", and according to the game data it costs 100 Nails, 150 Wood, 40 Coarse Fabric and 30 Rope. Plan the materials before you take the quest.
The ship opens up a whole new layer of shipbuilding, upgrades and naval combat. You need two stations for it: the Wharf, which according to the game data can only stand on the shore, and the Shipwright's Workshop for gear. You buy the ship designs for the Brig and Frigate later from the Brethren of the Coast, from faction level 2 and 4. All costs are in our Windrose ship building guide.
Only sail short distances at first before heading into open water. One tip for the road: don't commit to a mega base early. Set up temporary outposts where resources are plentiful, and move on when an area is tapped out.
โ๏ธ Understanding the Crafting Tiers
Fan guides describe progression in four crafting tiers. Tier one is stone tools and wooden buildings. Tier two brings metalworking with charcoal and smelting: copper ore is smelted together with charcoal into ingots. Tiers three and four add firearms, better armor, alchemy and shipbuilding.
You won't find an exact amount for the ingot recipe here, on purpose. The numbers going around contradict each other, there's no official source, and recipes like this change during Early Access anyway. Check the value at the smelter in the game. Work through the tiers in order, because skipping ahead quickly leaves you without the materials you need.
๐๏ธ Patch Status and What's Next
The current version is 0.10.0.9 from August 25, 2026. It fixes cannonballs not registering damage on the stern, sails and hull. Before that, 0.10.0.8 arrived on July 8, 2026 against projectiles passing through ships at range. No newer patch had been released by October 15, 2026.
The big Ashlands update has been announced with a fourth, volcanic biome including a new boss, more ship classes and additional building parts. According to a press release from publisher Pocketpair dated October 9, 2026, it's due this winter, with no exact date yet. Everything known so far is in our Windrose Ashlands overview.

โ FAQ: Windrose Tips for Beginners
What should I build first in Windrose?
The Bonfire. It defines your build radius and heals you outside of combat. According to community reports it doesn't set your respawn point, though, for that you need a tent or bed. After that, a workbench and a storage chest, both inside the radius.
Can I play Windrose in co-op?
Yes, PvE co-op for up to eight players, with four recommended. Difficulty scales with player count: enemies get more health and posture resistance. The value can be set from 0 to 200 percent in the world settings and turned off entirely.
Is there PvP in Windrose?
No. Windrose is 100 percent PvE. There's no player combat and no raids on your base.
Why do boars keep killing me?
Because combat is souls-like and you go down fast without armor and a weapon. Build a weapon and armor early and dodge attacks instead of taking them.
When do I get my first ship?
Nobody hands you one. You start with a raft. Your first real ship, the Ketch, comes from the quest "I Need a Bigger Boat" and according to the game data costs 100 Nails, 150 Wood, 40 Coarse Fabric and 30 Rope.
Official basis for this guide: the Windrose Steam store page for developer, publisher, Early Access launch, language table and player count, plus the Steam patch notes up to version 0.10.0.9. Co-op scaling comes from a developer post on the official Steam forums. The bag recipe, ship costs, station names and the Wharf rule come from the game data in the windrose.gaming.tools database.
Not officially confirmed and taken from fan guides such as Destructoid, KeenGamer, Nodecraft, method.gg and Prima Games: the comfort and Rested system, the boars and the four crafting tiers. That workbenches and traders only work within the Bonfire's range is stated in the in-game text. Checked as of October 2026, version 0.10.0.9. There is no official Windrose wiki. Since the game is in Early Access, recipes and values change with updates.
