Windrose workers are the only crew you can actually hire and put to work. The game has two groups that people lump together: the crew on your ship and the NPCs in your camp. Only the camp workers can be recruited, assigned to a station and used.
If you're looking for gunners, helmsmen or a sailing master, you won't find them. Kraken Express describes one function on the Steam page: you recruit NPCs so your camp harvests and produces faster. This guide covers which workers exist in the game data, what they cost, where to find them and what the crew on board really does.
โ Ship Crew vs. Windrose Workers
Mixing up the two groups is the most common mistake. Your ship has a crew that handles the rigging and throws out the occasional one-liner. Your camp has NPCs you pay to join and then place at a specific station, where they boost what you craft.
The developer only confirms the second part on the official Steam page: recruit NPCs and grow your settlement to speed up harvesting and production. In the Early Access section, Kraken Express calls the current state "basic reputation systems and NPC workers". The official description says nothing beyond that.
Set your expectations accordingly. A worker isn't a sailor. You can't take one on board and park them behind a cannon. If you want to win more sea battles, you do it through the ship, your ammunition and your ship's crew equipment, not through camp workers.
๐ฐ Where to Hire Windrose Workers and What They Cost
The extracted game data on the database windrose.gaming.tools lists four workers, all recruited in Tortuga for 500 Piastres each. Names, professions and bonuses below come from that data. Kraken Express has not published official details on the individual workers.
| Worker | Location | Cost | Bonus according to the game data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rosalinda Mercer (Alchemist) | Tortuga | 500 Piastres | Master Bottle Maker: doubles Clay Bottle production; Talented Alchemist: 30% chance to craft an extra elixir |
| Jasper Crowe (Tailor) | Tortuga | 500 Piastres | Thrifty Tailor: 30% chance to recover the resources spent on upgrading an item |
| Black Axel (Cook) | Tortuga | 500 Piastres | A Talented Chef: 30% chance to craft an extra portion |
| Mortar Joe (Powderman) | Tortuga | 500 Piastres | Talented Powderman: increases Gunpowder production by 50% |
Fan guides disagree on Mortar Joe's gunpowder bonus, and some list a 30 percent chance at an extra craft. The game data settles it: his bonus increases gunpowder production by 50 percent. According to the database he also has a personal quest that is coming in a future update.
๐ง Assigning Workers: the Workers Tab at the Station
Hiring alone does nothing. The bonus only kicks in once the worker is placed at the right station. Open the crafting menu of the building you want to boost. It has its own tab for workers, and that's where you make the assignment.
The pairing is fixed. Rosalinda Mercer belongs at the Alchemy Table, Jasper Crowe at the Armor and Clothing Workshop and Mortar Joe at the Millstones. According to the game data, Black Axel works at the Cooking Fire and the Disassembly Table.
๐ฆ What Your Camp Crew Really Costs
All four known workers together cost 2,000 Piastres. According to community reports there are no running costs: it's a one-time payment per worker, with no daily wage and no food upkeep. If you have to save up first, pick the order based on how you play.
| Playstyle | Hire first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| lots of sailing and sea battles | Mortar Joe | gunpowder is the consumable that disappears fastest in combat |
| exploring and long trips | Black Axel | more portions per cook stretch your supplies |
| upgrading gear | Jasper Crowe | returned materials lower the cost of every upgrade |
| potions and supplies | Rosalinda Mercer | doubled bottles take pressure off the whole potion chain |
You won't earn 2,000 Piastres on the side. How to get goods and find buyers is covered in our guide to Windrose resources and trading.
๐งช Getting the Most Out of Each Worker
Windrose workers only pay off if you actually use their station. A worker at a bench you touch twice per session saves you almost nothing. Start with the one whose station runs hottest in your day-to-day play.
Something people overlook: most of the bonuses are probabilities. A 30 percent chance at an extra portion pays off over many crafts, not over three. Plan in batches and craft larger amounts in one go instead of clicking one item at a time.
It also helps to finish building the station and stock it with materials before you hire. That way the worker can run several batches right after you assign them, and you'll quickly see whether the 500 Piastres make sense for your playstyle.
๐ฉธ The Crew on Your Ship: What It Does and Doesn't Do
This is the part most guides skip. Since Early Access began on April 14, 2026, the ship's crew has come up in the official patch notes only in passing: in version 0.10.0.4 from April 30, 2026, to note that their voice lines can now be heard in free camera.
No patch since then has added roles, tasks or any kind of management for the crew on board. The crew still matters, though. The game data has a category called Ship: Crew Equipment, for example Boarding Party Gear from the Shipwright's Workshop. According to its description, it increases your crew's power while boarding other ships.
You can't assign posts to the crew. Players on the official Steam forum also report that lost crew members come back on their own, which is a player report, not official confirmation. On October 8, 2026, Kraken Express wrote that it is exploring ways to make the crew feel more involved in ship setup and naval gameplay for the Ashlands update.
For combat, rely on your ship, your positioning, your ammo and your crew equipment. The camp workers like the cook, tailor and alchemist only help with production, not at sea.
๐ก Wages, Morale and Roles: Not in the Game
To be clear, because a lot of made-up information is floating around: Windrose has no documented wages, no morale values, no fatigue and no crew roles like gunner or helmsman. Neither the Steam page nor the patch notes nor the developer posts mention anything like that.
If a guide gives you exact daily wages, morale percentages or a cap on crew size, treat it as unconfirmed for now. A game that's only been in Early Access since April 2026 naturally has thin sourcing on Windrose workers and crew. Invented numbers are a different story.
๐๏ธ What Kraken Express Has Announced
In the July 1, 2026 devblog about the upcoming Ashlands update, Kraken Express wrote that the camp NPCs were well received and that the system will be expanded. There's no specific feature, date or list of roles attached to that.
The same devblog says the team wants to explore wind influence on sailing; it isn't in the game. On October 8, 2026, Kraken Express added that it is looking for ways to involve the ship crew more. According to publisher Pocketpair, Ashlands is announced for this winter. Everything else Kraken Express announced is in our overview of the Windrose Ashlands update.
๐ Windrose Workers FAQ
Can I hire a crew in Windrose?
You can hire four workers for your camp, according to the game data in Tortuga for 500 Piastres each. There's no ship crew to hire. The crew on board comes with the game, and you can't put one together yourself.
How do I assign a worker?
Open the crafting menu of the matching station. It has a separate tab for workers, where you place the NPC you recruited at that station. The bonus only applies after that.
How many workers can I have?
No cap is documented anywhere. Four paid workers are known, each tied to their own station, so the question barely comes up right now.
Do workers cost money or food over time?
No. According to matching community reports, it's a one-time payment. Wages, food or upkeep aren't documented for Windrose.
Does the crew give a bonus in naval combat?
When boarding, yes, through equipment. According to the game data, crew equipment such as Boarding Party Gear increases your crew's power while boarding other ships. Individual crew members with their own bonuses or posts don't exist.
What happens when a crew member dies?
Players on the official forum report that lost crew members come back on their own. There's no official confirmation of that.
