- โ FAQ: Windrose Dungeons
Windrose dungeons are the one place in the game where your gear grows faster than through gathering and trading. On the Steam page, Kraken Express lists over 100 hand-crafted dungeons and points of interest, and adds in the same sentence that the rewards rarely come without risk.
This guide explains how to recognize these locations, which types exist, how keys and hidden chests work and why no location list from the web can help you. Status: Early Access, version 0.10.0.9 from August 25, 2026. The start of the game is covered in our Windrose beginner tips.
๐งญ What's Official and What the Number Really Means
The official Steam store description is more precise than most guides make it sound. It reads: "Over 100 hand-crafted dungeons and points of interest contain endless secrets and treasures, though such rewards rarely come without risk."
The key is the little word "and". The 100+ figure covers dungeons and points of interest together, not 100 dungeons plus extra points of interest. Many fan sites split the two and double the game's scope on paper. The Early Access description on the same Steam page is even more careful about the current state and mentions over 90 hand-crafted points of interest across about 30 islands.
Also official: procedurally generated biomes "filled with hidden mysteries, hand-crafted dungeons and quests" and tough bosses. Kraken Express doesn't publish anything about individual locations, and there is no official Windrose wiki.
Important for planning: Windrose runs solo or in co-op with up to eight players, but the store explicitly recommends no more than four, because performance suffers in the late game otherwise. That's exactly where the toughest locations are.
๐ Finding Windrose Dungeons: Three Reliable Signals
No location list applies to your world: the islands are procedurally generated, only the locations themselves are hand-built. The pattern carries over, the position never does. It's the same logic our Windrose navigation guide breaks down.
According to consistent player reports on the official Steam forums, which aren't officially confirmed, Windrose uses three signals to show you locations:
- The magnifying glass icon. Discoverable locations appear as magnifying glass markers on the map once you're close enough.
- Landmarks seen from the water. Bigger wrecks give themselves away with a mast that sticks out far above the tree line. That's the most reliable hint when you sail past.
- Quest markers that show up later. Several locations only appear on the map once you've found a related location first.
The third point causes the most frustration: in the side quest "Mystery of the Expedition", the game asks for more graves without marking them. As one player on the forums put it: "no one has time to randomly run around each island in the game to find few randomly placed graves."
๐ Location Types at a Glance
This overview comes from player reports on the official Steam forums and is not officially confirmed. Kraken Express hasn't published a list of locations.
| Location type | How to spot it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Beach wrecks | Wreckage on the beach, mast visible from afar | Undead enemies, key-locked chests |
| Pirate camps | Tents and palisades on the coast | Crates, enemies carrying keys |
| Old ruins | Stone walls in the jungle | Smashable crates, hidden chambers |
| Traveler camps | Small camp, first chest open to loot | A letter pointing to a dig spot |
| Smuggler stashes | Hole covered with leaves and wood | One Drowned guard, supplies |
| Caves | Entrances in cliffs and slopes | Ore veins, deeper caves with iron |
What's in which cave and who buys the loot is sorted by region in our Windrose resources and trading guide. This one is about the locations themselves.
A note on the catchy names you'll see on the forums: places like "The Hidden Grotto", "Sunken Shipwreck Cove" or "The Submerged Ruins" sound like underwater content, but they aren't. Windrose has no diving, and Kraken Express hasn't announced it for the next update either. According to players, all of these locations can be explored from the surface.
๐ The Key System and the Mistake Almost Everyone Makes
Beach wrecks and camps have chests that need a key. The key isn't in a crate, it drops from enemies. According to forum reports it comes from the strongest, most heavily armored undead in the group. One player describes a key icon above exactly those enemies.
Now the tip most guides miss. According to the forums, the chests ask for an "ancient key". But the item that lands in your inventory is called "Old Key" and looks like a small brown pouch. One player on the official forums put it like this: "the drop looks like a small brown pouch and is called 'old key' for some reason, even though the chests say they need an 'ancient key.'"
That mismatch costs time. If you search your inventory for "ancient", you find nothing, think the location is bugged and sail on, even though the key has been in your backpack all along. The item does exist: the game data in the windrose.gaming.tools database lists it as Old Key, with a description saying it smells of sea, mud and seaweed. We only know the chest text with "ancient key" from the forums.
If a key really is missing, the forums suggest a simple fix: leave the location, let the enemies respawn, come back.
โ๏ธ Digging, Switches and Hidden Chambers
Some of the loot isn't lying around in plain sight. Players on the official forums consistently describe two hiding techniques. Neither is officially confirmed.
The dig spot at the red cloth. In traveler camps, the first open chest holds a letter. It points to a tree with a red rag. Players place the spot roughly thirty to fifty feet from the center of the camp, sometimes as a red band on a pole or a skeleton on the ground. One player's advice: "dig everywhere around that tree to find it. (Takes about 3 digs on the correct spot to fully reveal it)."
The wall switch behind crates. In ruins, smashable wooden crates sometimes hide a switch on the wall that opens a niche. One player describes exactly that for a larger wreck site: "Behind some smashable wooden crates inside the ruins, there is a switch on a wall that opens a hidden alcove."
In practice: smash every wooden crate in ruins, even the ones that look empty, and bring a shovel.
๐งฎ What a Dungeon Run Really Costs
The gear is simple. The shovel recipe is in the game data of the windrose.gaming.tools database: you craft the shovel at the workbench.
| What | Amount | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| Shovel | 3 Copper Ingot and 10 Wood at the workbench | Game data |
| Shovel recipe | unlocks with the copper tools in the coastal jungle | Game data |
| Key for locked chests | from armored enemies on site | Community |
| Way back to the ship | rowboat, K key in game | Community |
The real price isn't material, it's time. Showing up without a shovel means doing the whole trip a second time, and the only way to find the spot again is your own map marker.
The second hidden cost is water. There's no diving, and players on the Steam forums report characters who drowned while swimming, gear and all. Going straight for a beach wreck isn't a shortcut: sail up close, don't swim.
๐ซ Why Interactive Maps and Location Lists Don't Work
Search for Windrose dungeons and you'll land almost exclusively on sites promising complete location lists with coordinates. Those can't be right. The islands are procedurally generated, and the locations are only identical as building blocks. Where they sit in the sea is different in every world.
The honest alternative still works: set a map marker the moment you find a location, not when you leave, and remember the island's silhouette.

โ FAQ: Windrose Dungeons
How many Windrose dungeons are there?
The Steam store says over 100, for hand-crafted dungeons and points of interest together, not separately. Sites that add the two up misread the official wording.
How do I spot a dungeon on the map?
According to player reports on the official Steam forums, by the magnifying glass icon once you're close enough. Bigger wrecks give themselves away with a mast you can see from afar. That isn't officially confirmed.
Where do I find the key for a locked chest?
On the enemies at the same location, according to the forums the most heavily armored ones. Watch out: the chest asks for an "ancient key", but the item in your inventory is called "Old Key" and looks like a small brown pouch.
Can I dive to sunken wrecks in Windrose?
No. Diving isn't in the game, and according to players, swimming for too long ends with drowning. Places like "Sunken Shipwreck Cove" can be explored from the surface. Underwater salvage is a forum wish, not a feature.
Why can't I find the chest in the traveler camp?
Because it's buried. The letter in the first chest points to a tree with a red cloth, roughly thirty to fifty feet from the camp. You need a shovel there and about three digs.
Are interactive maps useful for Windrose dungeons?
Not for locations. The world is procedurally generated, so no coordinate list can apply everywhere. What carries over is how the location types are built and which hiding techniques exist.
Official basis: the Windrose Steam store description from developer Kraken Express with the Early Access launch on April 14, 2026, the line about over 100 hand-crafted dungeons and points of interest with its risk warning, and the co-op recommendation of four players at most. Also the Steam news feed with patch notes up to version 0.10.0.9 from August 25, 2026, the "Ashlands" devblog from July 1, 2026, the sneak peek from August 28, 2026 and the pinned F.A.Q. post from the developer account on the Steam forums.
Explicitly community information: all location types, markers, key and chest mechanics, dig hints and wall switches, sourced from discussion threads on the official Windrose Steam forums. The shovel recipe and the key name come from the game data in the windrose.gaming.tools database. Checked as of October 2026, game version 0.10.0.9. There is no official Windrose wiki. We left out specific locations, coordinates and loot tables on purpose: in a procedurally generated world they don't carry over.
