- โ Windrose Navigation FAQ
Windrose navigation works differently from what many guides online claim. There is no fixed world map, no coordinates you can share and currently no wind that affects your ship. You find your way with your own map markers, fast travel points, signal fires and landmarks you remember.
This guide separates what Kraken Express officially says and what is in the game data from what fan sites made of it. The game version is 0.10.0.9 in Early Access.
๐งญ What's Official: Your Map Is One of a Kind
The Early Access description on Steam is clear here. The current build contains three biomes spread across around 30 procedurally generated islands with over 90 hand-crafted points of interest. The store text itself speaks of over 100 hand-crafted dungeons and points of interest, and adds that procedural generation makes each journey stand out.
Almost everything that matters for navigation follows from that. The islands in your world sit in different places than in mine. The points of interest are identical building blocks, but their position in the ocean isn't. The database windrose.gaming.tools also points out that every world has its own archipelago and its own point of interest placement. There is no map you can copy.
โ ๏ธ The Costliest Mistake: the "Interactive Map" with Coordinates
Search for Windrose navigation and you'll quickly land on sites offering an interactive map with fixed coordinates for ores or treasure. Numbers like that can't apply across the board in a procedurally generated world. At best they fit the world of whoever wrote them down.
The conclusion is inconvenient but clear: other players' coordinates are useless for your world. What carries over is which resource shows up in which biome, and our guide to Windrose trading and resources sorts that by biome instead of by coordinates.
๐จ Wind: Planned, but Not in the Game
A windrose is the compass star on a sea chart, so you'd expect wind direction to matter. In the current build it doesn't. In the Ashlands devblog from July 1, 2026, Kraken Express itself writes that it is aware of the popular request to add wind influence on sailing.
The developer says it will definitely explore the idea, but makes clear that it should stay fun and simple. Windrose aims to be an adventure without the more hardcore simulation aspects. That is not a firm commitment to a wind system. Ashlands itself is announced for this winter, according to a press release from publisher Pocketpair on October 9, 2026. What the update brings is in our Windrose Ashlands overview.
Full speed tables for sailing with, across and against the wind circulate online anyway. They describe a mechanic that doesn't exist in the game. For Windrose navigation in version 0.10.0.9, you don't need to plan around wind direction.
๐ Fast Travel: Your Real Navigation Tool
Since there is no map you can share, you build your own network of routes. The tool for that is the Fast Travel Bell. Its values come from the extracted game data on windrose.gaming.tools, and the Fast Travel Point description is in-game text:
| What | Cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Fast Travel Bell | 10 Copper Ingots, 3 Rope at the Workbench | the recipe is one of the Coastal Jungle discoveries |
| Fast Travel Point | 1 Fast Travel Bell, 20 Wood | you need at least two points to travel |
| Limit | 10 Fast Travel Points per world | stated in the in-game description |
You don't have to craft the first bell. According to the database, it is loot from a Supply Cache early in the game.
Whether your ship comes along when you fast travel is answered neither by Kraken Express nor by the game data, and fan guides contradict each other. Plan as if the ship stays where you left it. The Copper Ingots for more bells come from the same metal chain you need for shipbuilding.
๐ Map Markers and Signal Fires
What a database does in other games, you do yourself in Windrose. Even before Early Access, Kraken Express announced a reworked map on which you can place markers and chart routes. The developer does not name a marker limit.
Marker discipline decides how much time you waste. Set the marker the moment you find something, not when your inventory is full. Good candidates are cave entrances, copper deposits, flax fields and faction main bases with their Buyers.
For finding your way at sea, there is also the Signal Fire. Kraken Express added it because many players were using Bonfires as makeshift lighthouses. According to the in-game text, its light can be seen from afar, but you can only place three signal fires per world. The game data lists 20 Wood and 10 Animal Fat as the building cost.
๐บ๏ธ Treasure Maps and Map Fragments
Windrose does have coordinates, just inside the game itself. The game data contains nine maps from Blackbeard's crew, from Blackbeard Crew's First Map to the Ninth. There is also the Map Fragment with Coordinates. According to its description, a few numbers are scrawled on it in uneven handwriting, and you need the remaining fragments to get the full coordinates.
You find these clues in your own world, which is why they lead you to the right spot there. Coordinate lists from the web can't do that.
๐๏ธ Finding Islands Again: a Method Without Made-Up Numbers
Since nobody can hand you coordinates, here's a routine that works in a procedural world. It costs two minutes on your first visit and saves hours later.
- Circle first, then land. One lap around the island shows bays, beaches and hazards, and gives you the silhouette you'll recognize it by.
- Mark it right away. One marker for the island, more for each find. Later you'll remember the ore vein, not the island.
- Remember landmarks, not compass directions. A wreck on the beach, a rock arch, an odd cluster of trees. Those are fixed in your world.
- Use the coastline as a guide rope. On the way back, follow the shore instead of cutting across open sea. It's slower, but you won't lose your bearings.
- Spend Fast Travel Points wisely. Ten is the maximum, so put them at biome borders, Tortuga and the faction bases, not on the third wood island.
- Light a Signal Fire at your most important bay. Three fires cover your main base, your wharf and one outpost you visit often.

โ Windrose Navigation FAQ
Does Windrose have a fixed world map?
No. According to Steam, the Early Access build is spread across around 30 procedurally generated islands in three biomes. The points of interest are hand-crafted, but their position in the ocean isn't. Other players' coordinate lists won't match your world.
Does wind affect my ship in Windrose?
No. In the Ashlands devblog, Kraken Express calls wind influence a popular request it wants to explore, keeping it simple and free of simulation overhead. Speed percentage tables floating around are made up.
How do I unlock fast travel?
According to the database, you find your first Fast Travel Bell in a Supply Cache early on. You craft more at the Workbench from 10 Copper Ingots and 3 Rope. A Fast Travel Point costs one bell and 20 Wood, and you need at least two points.
How many Fast Travel Points can I build?
Ten per world, as the in-game description of the Fast Travel Point says. On top of that come up to three Signal Fires as landmarks you can see from far away.
Does my ship come with me when I fast travel?
That is not officially settled, and fan guides contradict each other. To be safe, assume it stays behind.
How do I find an island again?
With your own map markers, the silhouette of the island you circled and fixed landmarks like wrecks or rock formations. On the way back, follow the coast instead of crossing open water.
