- โ Windrose Ashlands FAQ
Windrose Ashlands is the first big content update for Kraken Express's pirate survival game: a fourth, volcanic biome with a boss, more story, new factions, at least one new ship class and more building pieces. Since the Triple-i Initiative on October 8, 2026, there's a release window: Ashlands is set to launch this winter. There's no exact date yet, and much of the content is officially subject to change.
This overview separates what Kraken Express actually said in its devblog of July 1, 2026, its sneak peek of August 28, 2026 and around the Triple-i Initiative on October 8, 2026 from what forums and AI-written sites turned it into.
๐ What Windrose Ashlands is
Ashlands is the name of the next major update, not a separate DLC. Kraken Express introduced it in the official devblog "Windrose Devblog: Ashlands (WIP)", and the WIP is meant literally. The post opens with a clear disclaimer: the team experiments a lot, drops ideas that don't hold up in testing and is talking about plans that can still change.
For you, that means everything listed as announced below is an intention, not a promise. Where Kraken Express itself writes "at least" or "we're exploring", we keep exactly that caution. If someone sells you the content as a finished list with stats, it didn't come from an official source.
๐ The story continues
The devblog puts the story first. Main and side quests are supposed to grow noticeably, and new factions join in and pull you into their plans. The search for the artifact at the heart of the main story, the Obol, leads into the ruins of a long-forgotten Spanish colony that volcanic eruptions have turned into dangerous land. And you're not the only one looking.
Important if you have a running save: Kraken Express writes that it's working hard so you can continue your adventure and keep your progress. That's a stated goal, not a technical guarantee. The devblog doesn't announce a wipe anywhere, though.
Existing factions get attention too. Their outfits are set to be reworked. The devblog names the Buccaneers as an example, with other groups to follow.
๐ฅ The fourth biome: volcanic land with a boss
According to the Steam store, Windrose currently has three biomes spread across around 30 procedurally generated islands. Ashlands becomes the fourth: a region scarred by volcanic eruptions that hides relics and secrets under the ash, still guarded by someone.
Kraken Express lists new islands, enemies, items, resources, recipes, points of interest and a challenging boss. New factions are also supposed to bring more armor and weapon variants. The devblog gives no names, stats or locations, so any list of specific Ashlands items right now is made up.
One sentence deserves attention: each biome should play differently, so the team is also exploring biome-specific mechanics. What that means in practice, the post leaves open.
โต Ships: Brigantine, Fluyt and Galleon in the works
The studio says it sees a lot of room to grow in ship gameplay. On the list: deeper ship gameplay, more ship classes and more faction variants, more care for naval combat and better AI, such as NPC ships that sail more naturally and travel in formation. Kraken Express stresses that not all of this has to fit into one update.
The devblog names the Brigantine, the Fluyt and the Galleon as ships in development. The only commitment is that at least one of them is expected to arrive with Ashlands. The sneak peek on August 28, 2026 showed a Galleon variant for the Brethren of the Coast, along with new damage effects on the ship.
On October 8, 2026, Kraken Express also announced a rework of ship customization in the post "Voyage to Ashlands: Ship Customization, pt.1". The fixed faction variants that exist today for the Brethren of the Coast and Blackbeard's Crew are set to be removed. Instead, you pick a ship class and customize it freely. The hold is supposed to take useful installations such as a workbench and a cooking fire. The studio says resources from dismantled faction ships will be fully refunded.
๐ A brig is not a brigantine
This is a mix-up that runs through a lot of guides. The English Steam store page describes today's ships as ranging from the ketch through the brig to the frigate. The Brigantine, on the other hand, is listed in the devblog as a ship that's still being worked on.
So if you read that the Brigantine is already the mid-size ship, someone renamed the brig. For your planning: the mid-size ship you build today stays the brig, and a Brigantine would be an additional ship once the update lands.
๐ฌ๏ธ Wind, diving, crew: what's announced and what isn't
Wind affecting sailing is one of the most requested features. Kraken Express writes that it will definitely look into the idea and had originally planned it, but makes clear it should stay fun and simple. The studio sees Windrose as an adventure without some of the hardcore simulation aspects. Exploring isn't the same as adding: right now, wind has no effect.
Diving isn't mentioned in the Ashlands devblog at all, and on the Steam forum it is listed as a player request. The crew is a different story: in the October 8 post, Kraken Express writes that it is exploring ways to make the crew feel more involved in your ship setup and naval gameplay. The studio wants to share details later.
๐ Building and camp NPCs
The team says it was impressed by what the community has built. That's why the update plans new decorations, expanded building sets and quality-of-life improvements for building. You can submit requests on the official idea board at windrose.support and vote on them there.
The camp NPCs, which according to the devblog were well received, are also set to be expanded. That means the workers you recruit for your camp, not a ship crew.
โ๏ธ Weapons, armor and faction outfits
The sneak peek on August 28, 2026 showed some work in progress. On screen were a colorful new armor set for NPCs, reworked Halberds and Greatswords, and outfit sets meant to reflect each faction's character better. The Galleon variant for the Brethren of the Coast was shown too.
Whether the weapon rework only changes the looks or also affects melee behavior, the post doesn't say.

๐๏ธ When does Windrose Ashlands come out?
This winter, with no exact date yet. Kraken Express named the window with a new teaser at the Triple-i Initiative on October 8, 2026. Publisher Pocketpair confirmed on its website on October 9, 2026 that Ashlands is "scheduled to launch this winter". According to the showcase summary, the update brings a new biome, new quests, armor and weapons and a new boss, and the accompanying text also mentions a new ship without naming its class.
The devblog of July 1 had said an estimated release window would follow as development progressed. The October 8 announcement settles that.
On the Steam forum, a rule of thumb is going around that big updates come every six months. That's a community guess, not something Kraken Express said. The only official frame covers Early Access as a whole: according to the Steam store, the studio expects 1.5 to 2.5 years until the full release, which should offer around 50 percent more content, with more biomes, bosses, enemies, ships and loot.
Between the devblog and mid-October 2026, only two small patches came out. Version 0.10.0.8 on July 8, 2026 fixed projectiles passing through ships at long range, and version 0.10.0.9 on August 25, 2026 makes cannonballs deal proper damage to the stern, sails and hull. Both are bug fixes, not Ashlands content.
๐งญ What you can plan around right now
- Keep playing your save. No wipe has been announced, and Kraken Express wants progress to carry over.
- Count on the brig as your mid-size ship, not a Brigantine, until Ashlands is out.
- Don't plan routes around the wind. It still has no effect.
- Be skeptical of sites with Ashlands stats, maps or boss names. The devblog names none.
- Patch notes appear in the Steam news feed, and that's likely where the exact date will show up first.

No wipe has been announced. The devblog explicitly states the goal that you can continue your adventure and keep your progress. In an Early Access game, that's not a technical guarantee, though.

The Brigantine, Fluyt and Galleon are in development. The only commitment is that at least one of them is expected with the update. So far, a Galleon variant for the Brethren of the Coast has been shown.

As of October 2026 (checked October 15, 2026). Ashlands has not been released and has no exact date; the current game version is still 0.10.0.9. The six-month rule of thumb comes from the official Steam forum and is a community guess. There is no official Windrose wiki.
