- ๐ฆ FAQ: Warframe focus schools
The Warframe focus schools are your Operator's talent system, and they only show up in the menu after the quest "The Second Dream". There are five schools, each with a clearly separate role, and in the long run you'll build all five. This guide covers unlocking, farming Focus, switching schools and the best starting school for beginners.
๐ฏ Unlocking Focus: the one requirement
Access hinges on a single quest: The Second Dream. Digital Extremes' official quest guide on warframe.com names one condition: the quest becomes available through the Codex or quest menu once Neptune is unlocked. At the end of the quest you pick your first school, and from that moment on you earn Focus.
For Amps and the Quills in Cetus you also need the quest The War Within. Only after that does the Quills' hideout open up, and only with an Amp does your Operator get the full use out of its Focus abilities.
๐งช The five Warframe focus schools at a glance
Since the big rework in "Angels of the Zariman", every school has its own identity. Digital Extremes described the goal at the time as giving every existing school a more clearly defined identity and a distinct playstyle. The table sums up what each of the focus schools stands for.
| School | Motto | Defining node | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Madurai | Engage the Enemy | Void Strike: up to 1,000% bonus damage for 8 seconds | Eidolon hunts, Amp damage |
| Vazarin | Counter the Enemy | Mending Soul: your first four revives are instant | Defense, Rescue, solo |
| Naramon | Know the Enemy | Power Spike: the combo counter only drops by 5 instead of to zero | melee builds |
| Unairu | Outlast the Enemy | Caustic Strike: strips up to 100% of the armor of enemies hit | Steel Path, high levels |
| Zenurik | Dominate the Enemy | Wellspring: up to 5 Energy per second for allies at the well | almost any build, especially beginners |
โจ Madurai: the damage school
Void Strike turns stored Operator energy into a massive damage bonus, and Phoenix Talons adds a permanent 30 percent physical damage. If you hunt Eidolons, there's no way around Madurai. Our Warframe Eidolon hunt guide covers the rest of that setup.
โจ Vazarin: the protection school
Guardian Shell puts a barrier with up to 500 base health on you and nearby allies, and it is invulnerable for the first four seconds. Protective Sling hands out five seconds of damage immunity when you Void Sling through allies, and Mending Soul makes your first four revives instant. In Defense missions with a fragile objective, that's worth its weight in gold.
โจ Naramon: the melee school
Naramon basically exists for one node: Power Spike keeps your melee combo counter alive instead of letting it reset completely after a short break. On top of that, Affinity Spike gives 45 percent more Affinity on melee weapons.
โจ Unairu: the armor-stripping school
Caustic Strike removes all armor in an area, and Magnetic Flare disables the shields of enemies inside its field for up to 30 seconds, though not on bosses. On the Steel Path that's the difference between "enemy dies" and "enemy doesn't die".
โจ Zenurik: the energy school
Zenurik solves the problem that slows down every Warframe sooner or later: an empty energy bar. Energy Pulse pulls 50 percent bonus energy out of every Energy Orb, Wellspring places an energy well, and Inner Might lets you cast one ability per minute for free.
๐ Farming Focus: Lenses, Convergence Orbs and the daily cap
Lenses: the only bridge from Affinity to Focus
Focus for the Warframe focus schools doesn't drop as loot. It's created only when a Lens on a fully ranked piece of gear converts excess Affinity. A Warframe or weapon at rank 30 keeps earning Affinity but can't turn it into levels anymore, and that surplus is what the Lens taps. On gear below rank 30, a Lens gives you exactly nothing.
| Lens | Conversion | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Focus Lens | 2% of excess Affinity | Bounties from Konzu, Eudico and Mother, tradeable |
| Greater Lens | 3% | Blueprint in the Market (4 Focus Lenses, 1 Forma, 1 Argon Crystal, 1 Orokin Cell), not tradeable |
| Eidolon Lens | 4.25% | Blueprint from tier 5 and Steel Path bounties, needs 1 Greater Lens |
| Lua Lens | 5.5% | Blueprint from Lua Disruption (Rotation C), needs 1 Eidolon Lens |
The point most guides skip: where the Lens sits matters almost as much as which Lens it is. Warframe hands out Affinity by fixed rules. An ability kill gives 100 percent to the Warframe, a weapon kill splits it half and half between Warframe and weapon.
Shared Affinity from your squad goes 25 percent to the Warframe and 75 percent split across all equipped weapons. With four weapons, each one only gets 18.75 percent. So your most expensive Lens belongs on your Warframe, not on your favorite weapon.
Convergence Orbs: the 10x multiplier
Convergence Orbs spawn during missions when you use a Lens, and for a short time they multiply Affinity-to-Focus conversion by 10x. Per the patch notes, Update 31.5 raised the multiplier from 8x to 10x, and older guides to the focus schools often still list the old number.
Because the bonus is short, the efficient way is: grab the orb first, then pull the next wave, not the other way around.
Doing the math on the daily cap
According to the commonly cited community figure, the cap is 250,000 Focus per day, plus 5,000 per Mastery Rank. A player at Mastery Rank 20 gets 350,000 per day. The cap resets at 00:00 UTC.
There's a second source besides farming: Eidolon Shards can be converted straight into Focus in the Transference Room. A regular Eidolon Shard gives 2,500 points, a Brilliant Eidolon Shard 25,000, for any unlocked school. Whether that conversion counts toward the daily cap isn't officially documented.
๐ Switching Warframe focus schools and what it costs
The pick at the end of The Second Dream isn't a dead end. Each of the four schools you didn't choose costs 50,000 Focus to unlock, so 200,000 for all four. Once a school is open, you switch between your unlocked Warframe focus schools as often as you like, at no extra cost.
The real trick is called Way-Bound. Every school has two of these nodes, ten in total. Max one out, pay another 750,000 Focus plus a Brilliant Eidolon Shard, and its bonus works in every school from then on. That's how experienced players collect Operator stats like Void Siphon, Enduring Tides or Mind Step.
The old Focus pool that limited how many nodes could be active at once is gone: "Angels of the Zariman" removed it without replacement, and the Focus spent on it was refunded to the school it was invested in.
What a complete school really costs is listed in the notes of the school pages on the community-run wiki at wiki.warframe.com: about 9.0 million Focus for the main tree including the ranks of both Way-Bound nodes, plus 1.5 million and two Brilliant Eidolon Shards to unbind both Way-Bounds. The five Tauron nodes add roughly 5.0 million more, plus Lyroic Bridge, Ren Hypercore and Ascaris Prime.
That's about 10.5 million Focus for a single school without Tauron, and 15.505 million with it according to the wiki. At Mastery Rank 16 your cap is 330,000 per day, so even with the cap maxed every day you're looking at roughly 32 days without Tauron and about 47 days with it. And that's just one of five schools. The day counts are our own estimate based on the wiki costs, not an official figure from Digital Extremes.
โ ๏ธ New since Update 41: Tauron Strikes for the Warframe focus schools
With Update 41 "The Old Peace" on December 10, 2025, the Warframe focus schools got real new content for the first time in years. Each of the five existing schools gets five new nodes, one of them its own Tauron Strike as a third Operator ability.
You unlock it through the Tektolyst Artifacts from Marie Leroux in the Sanctum Anatomica. You need to have finished "The Old Peace" and unlocked the matching school, and each Artifact costs 150 Lyroic Bridge, 150 Ren Hypercore and 150 Ascaris Prime. The pairings: Lorak for Zenurik, Thara for Madurai, Nidri for Vazarin, Vexoric for Naramon and Cogron for Unairu.
For beginners that's a long-term goal. If you're still working through the Star Chart, max out a school's base nodes first.
๐ก Which of the Warframe focus schools beginners should build first
Our pick is clearly Zenurik, for a very practical reason: energy, not damage, is the bottleneck that actually holds beginner builds back. Energy Pulse, the school's cheapest node, costs 380,000 Focus across all four ranks, and at max rank it pulls 50 percent bonus energy over five seconds out of every Energy Orb you pick up. That's the best value for your Focus in the whole system.
After that, Wellspring is worth it, because it delivers energy even when no orbs drop. Only once that's in place does a second school get interesting: Unairu once you're on the Steel Path, or Madurai if Eidolons appeal to you. Vazarin and Naramon are strong, but far more specialized.
This order is our editorial recommendation based on node costs and effects, not an official guideline from the developer. If you play almost entirely melee, Naramon first is the better call. ๐ฆ FAQ: Warframe focus schools
How do I unlock the Warframe focus schools?
Through the quest "The Second Dream". Per warframe.com it becomes available once Neptune is unlocked. At the end of the quest you pick the first of your five focus schools.
How high is the daily Focus cap?
According to the common community figure, 250,000 points plus 5,000 per Mastery Rank. At Mastery Rank 20 that's 350,000 per day. It resets at 00:00 UTC.
Does switching schools cost anything?
Unlocking each additional school costs 50,000 Focus. After that, switching between unlocked schools is free and possible any time.
Which Lens is worth it for beginners?
The Greater Lens with 3 percent conversion is the best compromise, since its blueprint is sold in the Market for credits. Put it on your most-played rank 30 Warframe first, not on a weapon.
Does gear have to be rank 30 for a Lens to work?
Yes. A Lens only converts excess Affinity, and that only exists once the item can't rank up any further.
Do I need the Tauron nodes right away?
No. They require the quest "The Old Peace" plus 150 each of Lyroic Bridge, Ren Hypercore and Ascaris Prime, so they're a long-term goal. Build out a school's base nodes first.
