You move a Subnautica 2 save between PC and Xbox with a code: pick "Save to Cloud" in the main menu, copy the code and enter it on the other device under "Import Save File". Locally, your files live on your PC or Xbox, and depending on your account settings the platform cloud keeps a copy as well.
This guide covers what Unknown Worlds officially documents, how to back up and convert a world, and how players recover a broken save. Anything that only comes from the community is clearly labeled.
๐พ Where Subnautica 2 Stores Your Save
The official Unknown Worlds help center keeps it short: your saves are stored primarily on your device, PC or Xbox. Depending on your account settings, the platform's cloud service backs them up as well, with Steam Cloud and your Xbox account named as examples. That lets you keep playing on another device on the same platform.
The help center doesn't give the exact folder on PC. Players in the Steam discussions consistently name this path for the Steam version:
%localappdata%\Subnautica2\Saved\SaveGames
You can paste that path straight into the File Explorer address bar or the Run dialog. Careful: "%appdata%" takes you to the Roaming folder, which is the wrong place. We couldn't find a confirmed path for the Xbox app on PC or for Epic.
๐ Transferring a Subnautica 2 Save Between PC and Xbox
Subnautica 2 runs on Windows PC (Steam and Epic) and Xbox Series X|S. There's no PlayStation version, as explained in our article on Subnautica 2 on PS5. For switching platforms, Unknown Worlds built in an export feature. According to the help center, it takes four steps:
- In the main menu, go to your saved games, single player or multiplayer.
- Select the world you want and choose "Save to Cloud".
- Copy the code it generates.
- On the other platform, open "Import Save File" at the bottom left of the main menu and enter the code.
According to the help center, this works for single player and multiplayer worlds. Unknown Worlds doesn't say how long a code stays valid or if you can use it more than once. When in doubt, generate a fresh code right before you import.
๐ฅ Co-op: When the Host Can't Make It
In co-op, the world belongs to the host. That's how the system is built. Exporting changes something important, though: since the help center says multiplayer worlds can be shared by code too, the host can export the world and a friend can import it and host it themselves.
That's our reading of the official description. Unknown Worlds doesn't describe an explicit "host switch". In practice it matters that you end up with two separate copies after the import. If each group keeps playing its own, the worlds drift apart. Agree on who keeps the current version of your Subnautica 2 save.
๐ ๏ธ Convert, Rename and Switch Back
The help center describes three more actions that many players miss.
| Goal | Path according to the help center |
|---|---|
| Turn a solo world into co-op | Main Menu, "Play Single Player", select your save, "Convert to Multiplayer" |
| Keep playing a co-op world alone | Main Menu, "Host Multiplayer", select your save, "Convert to Single Player" |
| Rename a world | Main Menu, single player or "Host Multiplayer", select your save, "Rename" |
| Move to another platform | "Save to Cloud", copy the code, "Import Save File" |
According to the help center, you can rename a world at any time. If you run several worlds side by side, say one solo and one co-op, a clear name saves you mix-ups during an import later.
๐งช Experimental Branch: Separate Worlds
Since August 2026 there's been an optional test build on Steam and Xbox. For your save data, one clear rule applies there, and the help center repeats it several times:
- Separate saves: When you switch to the Experimental Branch, your regular worlds disappear from the list. They aren't deleted, just stored separately, and they come back when you switch back.
- No import or export between versions: The code feature doesn't work between Experimental and the main version.
- Back up first: Unknown Worlds recommends a backup before every switch between versions, because the test build can contain bugs.
- Not on Epic: The test build is only available on Steam and Xbox.
What the test build contains and when the next big update is expected is covered in our Subnautica 2 roadmap overview.
๐ฉน What Hotfix 1 Changed About Save Files
Buddy System Hotfix 1 from September 1, 2026 includes several changes that directly affect save data. The patch notes list:
- Save files now track build number and branch. A save from a newer build can no longer be loaded into an older one.
- An outdated save compatibility file was removed on all platforms.
- Leftover data from the base item spawn system and lingering construction ghost data from finished builds were cleaned up. That makes the files smaller.
- If you use mods, disable or remove them before your first launch after the hotfix, or the game may crash on startup.
For co-op, that means everyone needs the same version. Anyone on an older build should update first. Hotfix 2 from October 6, 2026 doesn't list any further change to save data in its patch notes, but it repeats the advice to disable mods before the first launch.
๐ Recovering a Broken Subnautica 2 Save (Community Method)
After a crash, a world sometimes won't load anymore. Unknown Worlds hasn't published an official guide for this. In the Steam discussions, the following method has become the standard, and we pass it on explicitly as community advice:
- Pause cloud sync: Turn off Steam Cloud sync for the game, or a broken file can overwrite your fix.
- Back up the folder: Copy the entire SaveGames folder somewhere else.
- Look for backups: Next to the .sav files, the folder holds older copies with the .bak extension.
- Swap the extension: Rename a matching .bak file to .sav and leave the file name in front of it unchanged.
- Test it: Start the game and load the world.
Player reports vary on how many .bak copies the game keeps. Don't count on a fixed number, and make your own copy before bigger trips into the deep.
๐ก Manual Saves and Autosave
Many questions in the Steam discussions are about saving manually. According to player reports, there's a dedicated manual save slot that's separate from the autosave and gets overwritten the next time you save manually. The Continue button, on the other hand, always loads the most recent save, which is often an autosave in the middle of a tight spot.
If you want to go back on purpose, pick the manual save on the load screen instead of just hitting Continue. Players say you can turn autosave off in the settings. Reports differ on which tab the option is under.
๐ Checklist Before Updates, Switches and Co-op Nights
A lot of lost worlds in Subnautica 2 come down to doing things in the wrong order. This short list combines the official notes with community experience.
- Before every update: Copy the SaveGames folder. It takes a minute, and it's the only backup you fully control.
- Before switching to the test build: Make a backup, as the help center recommends. The code export won't help you here.
- Before switching platforms: Save one last time on the old device and only then export, so your latest progress is in the export.
- Before a co-op night: Check that everyone is on the same version. Since Hotfix 1, an older build can't load saves from newer ones.
- After starting a new world: Give it a clear name right away, so exports and backups are easy to match.

โ Subnautica 2 Save FAQ
Can I transfer my save from PC to Xbox?
Yes. Pick the world in the main menu, choose "Save to Cloud" and enter the code on Xbox under "Import Save File". According to the help center, it works the other way around too.
Where are the save files on PC?
According to the Steam discussions, under %localappdata%\Subnautica2\Saved\SaveGames. Unknown Worlds only officially confirms that the files are stored locally on your device.
Can a friend host my co-op world?
Through the export, yes: according to the help center, multiplayer worlds can be shared by code. After that, though, there are two separate copies.
Are Experimental worlds compatible with the regular version?
No. Both versions store saves separately, and the code import doesn't work between them. Back up before every switch.
Can I continue a solo world in co-op?
Yes, with "Convert to Multiplayer". The way back is "Convert to Single Player".
Why won't my save load after the update?
Possible causes are mods still active after a hotfix (the notes for Hotfix 1 and Hotfix 2 both ask you to disable them) or different versions in co-op. Disable mods and make sure everyone has updated.
Checked against official sources as of October 2026. The current build is Early Access 1.2 "Buddy System" with Hotfix 2 from October 6, 2026. Its patch notes list no change to save data, so the rules from Hotfix 1 still apply. Official sources: the help center at support.subnautica.com (articles on save location, cross-platform transfer, converting, renaming and the Experimental Branch) and the patch notes for Hotfix 1 and Hotfix 2 in the Steam news feed.
Community data, all from the Steam discussions: the PC save path, the .bak recovery method and how manual saves and autosave behave. In Early Access, the save system can change with any update.
