Subnautica 2 Roadmap 2026: Every Update So Far and What Comes Next

Subnautica 2 Roadmap 2026: Every Update So Far and What Comes Next

The official Subnautica 2 roadmap has three stops, and two of them are done. Early Access 1.1 "Adaptive Measures" delivered the promised quality-of-life fixes, and Early Access 1.2 "Buddy System" brought the co-op features. The only one left is the big expansion Unknown Worlds itself calls "Early Access 2", and as of October 2026 it still has no date.

Below you'll find every update since the May 14, 2026 launch with its date, how each one lines up with the roadmap, everything confirmed about Early Access 2 and the status of the most-wanted community ideas on the official feedback board. Anything that's only speculation or press coverage is labeled as such.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ What the official Subnautica 2 roadmap promises

Unknown Worlds published the roadmap on May 15, 2026, one day after Early Access started. It's deliberately simple. Instead of dates it gives an order: first an update with quality-of-life improvements for areas that need tuning, then an update with co-op improvements based on community requests, then a major expansion.

For that expansion, the post is fairly specific about scope. It's meant to expand the world, biomes, creatures, resources, tools and vehicles, and to bring the next chapter of the story. In between, the studio promises ongoing bug fixes, balance changes, optimization and hotfixes when needed.

The fine print matters: the roadmap is explicitly subject to change. Platforms, prices and a 1.0 release don't appear in it at all. If you see a Subnautica 2 roadmap with months or quarters on it somewhere, it's not from an official source.

๐Ÿ“… Every update since Early Access launch

This table collects every Subnautica 2 entry from the Steam news feed and the news section on unknownworlds.com. The studio restarts hotfix numbering for each update, which is why "Hotfix 1" and "Hotfix 2" each appear twice.

DateUpdateMain changes

Buddy System Hotfix 2 is a pure bug fix patch with no new content. Early Access 2 had not been released by mid-October 2026.

โœ… Which Subnautica 2 roadmap items are already done

Stop 1: the "Adaptive Measures" quality-of-life update

The first major update for Subnautica 2 arrived on July 8, 2026 and matches the first roadmap item exactly. The biggest change was to Biomods: two extra Biolabs in the Coral Gardens and the Axum Ruins raised the number of unlockable Biomods from four to six, and scanning creatures unlocks another passive slot. Both areas are covered in our biome guide.

The update also added an FOV slider, sprinting on land, extra traversal and oxygen puzzles in wrecks, a bigger deconstruction radius for base building and a storage container whose contents no longer feed into nearby builds. Audio logs no longer play automatically. On Nvidia cards, an unintended 60 FPS cap was removed. If you build a lot, our base building guide covers the basics.

Stop 2: the "Buddy System" co-op update

On August 19, 2026 the second roadmap item followed and expanded Subnautica 2's co-op noticeably. All four headline features came from the community wish list: cross-platform proximity voice chat, reviving each other before you respawn, five emotes on a radial menu and direct item trading between players. Revived players keep their gear and get some oxygen back.

The update also added two new characters to choose from (Jegna and Grace), a new short-range Tracking Tag that you can place in containers like lockers, and a longer stun from the Sonic Resonator, now 10 seconds.

๐Ÿ”ญ Early Access 2: what's actually known

The name comes from the studio itself. In the post for the update vlog on July 7, 2026, Unknown Worlds wrote that the vlog shows content for the upcoming 1.2 update "and later in the year for Early Access 2". The vlog post for "Buddy System" on August 18 hints at another short look at "the upcoming Early Access 2 update".

Anthony Gallegos of Unknown Worlds got more specific in the "Swimming Forward" dev vlog on June 4, 2026. According to GameSpot's report, he announced the home of the Collector Leviathan as a new region, plus a new vehicle chassis that "brings back one of the most requested player experiences", along with new creatures and resources. He said this would make Subnautica 2 scarier than ever.

The studio hasn't said which vehicle that is. The only hint is that "Large Submarine" is among the most-voted ideas on the feedback board, but that link isn't confirmed. There's no date either. The popular estimate of "late September or October" was an extrapolation from the update rhythm so far, not an announcement, and September has now passed without a release. If you want to know what the current vehicles can do, see our vehicle guide.

๐Ÿงช Experimental Branch: test upcoming content early

Since August 12, 2026 there's been an optional test build that lets you play new content before it reaches the regular Early Access version. According to the help center, it was first meant for update 1.2. Between big updates the studio also uses it for smaller fixes, without a fixed schedule.

  • Steam: right-click the game in your library, open Properties, go to the Game Versions & Betas tab and select "Experimental".
  • Xbox: install the free Xbox Insider Hub app, join "Subnautica 2 Experimental (Public Test)" under Previews and then install it.

Important: saves are not compatible between Experimental and the main version, and you can't import or export them. Your regular save stays untouched, but the test build can contain game-breaking bugs. According to the community wiki, there were no content differences to the main version as of September 4.

๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ What the community wants, and what's marked as planned

Unknown Worlds collects requests on the official feedback board at subnautica2.nolt.io and points to it directly in the roadmap. The board's roadmap view is switched off, but individual ideas carry status labels. That's the only public hint at what the studio is looking at beyond the known Subnautica 2 roadmap.

Community ideaStatus on the board
Weather events (rain, storms)Planned
Huge mapPlanned
Skip the night in a bedResearching
Fish should be able to dieResearching
Replay audio clips from black boxesResearching
Large Submarineno status, category only
Water filtration stationno status, category only

"Planned" is a statement of intent on a feedback platform, not a date. The water filtration station is a request, not a feature: right now there's no automatic source of drinking water in the game.

โณ How long Early Access will last

On the Steam store page, Unknown Worlds puts Subnautica 2's Early Access at roughly two to three years, based on its own earlier Early Access projects. Counting from the May 2026 launch, that puts a 1.0 release in 2028 at the earliest. The studio hasn't named a date. The price is supposed to go up after Early Access.

The Subnautica 2 roadmap doesn't include new platforms either. Why that still means no PlayStation version is explained in our article on Subnautica 2 on PS5.

๐Ÿ’ก What each update means for your save

So far, neither major update has forced a fresh start in Subnautica 2. Still, this is Early Access, and bigger reworks can change existing worlds. Two official notes are worth remembering before every patch.

  • After Buddy System Hotfix 1, mods should be disabled before the first launch, or the game may crash.
  • The same hotfix clears leftover base building data out of saves and makes them smaller. If you back up old saves, do it before the patch.

Balance changes also land quietly in hotfixes. Hotfixes 2 and 3 changed how the Hammerhead, Marrowbreach and Nibbler behave in ways you'll notice, so older guides often describe outdated behavior.

โ“ Subnautica 2 roadmap FAQ

When is the next big Subnautica 2 update?

For Early Access 2, Unknown Worlds only says "later in the year", which means 2026. There's no day or month. As of October 2026, no date has been announced, and any dates you see online are guesses based on the update rhythm.

What's in Early Access 2?

According to the official roadmap: an expansion of the world, biomes, creatures, resources, tools and vehicles, plus the next story chapter. Press reports on the June 4 dev vlog mention the home of the Collector Leviathan and a new vehicle chassis.

Which updates have already come out?

Two major updates: EA 1.1 "Adaptive Measures" on July 8 and EA 1.2 "Buddy System" on August 19, 2026. On top of that, six hotfixes, most recently Buddy System Hotfix 2 on October 6, 2026, and, since August 12, the Experimental Branch.

Is weather or a bigger map coming to Subnautica 2?

Both ideas have the status "Planned" on the official feedback board. That signals the studio's intent, but neither is part of the published roadmap or tied to a timeframe.

Can I bring my save into the Experimental Branch?

No. Saves aren't compatible between Experimental and the main version. You start fresh there, but your normal save stays intact.

When does version 1.0 come out?

Unknown. The studio expects about two to three years of Early Access from May 2026. The roadmap itself doesn't mention a 1.0.

As of October 2026. The current build is Early Access 1.2 "Buddy System" with Hotfix 2 from October 6, 2026; Early Access 2 has not been released yet. The status labels on the feedback board are a snapshot and can change at any time.

Checked against the official patch notes in the Steam news feed, the roadmap, update and vlog posts on unknownworlds.com, the Early Access section of the Steam store page, the help center at support.subnautica.com and the official feedback board at subnautica2.nolt.io. Not officially confirmed: the content of the June 4 dev vlog (source: GameSpot's report), the state of the Experimental Branch on September 4 (community wiki) and any date estimate for Early Access 2.
