Subnautica 2 PS5: Why There's No PlayStation Release (2026)

Subnautica 2 PS5: Why There's No PlayStation Release (2026)

Subnautica 2 PS5 is the question most console players are asking right now, and the honest answer is: no PlayStation release has been announced. Subnautica 2 has been in Early Access since May 14, 2026, only on Windows PC and Xbox Series X|S, and there is still no date for a PS5 version.

This article shows what's actually confirmed, which games from the series you can play on PS5 instead and what Early Access means for you in practice.

๐ŸŽฏ Subnautica 2 PS5: the confirmed status

Unknown Worlds launched Subnautica 2 into Early Access on May 14, 2026. Since then the developer and the stores have listed only two platforms: Windows PC via Steam and Epic, and Xbox Series X|S through the Xbox Game Preview program. A PlayStation 5 version isn't in any store or on the official roadmap, and it was never announced with a time frame.

That matters, because plenty of made-up dates are floating around online. There's no date, no window, no official commitment. If someone gives you a specific month for Subnautica 2 on PS5, they have no source for it. We didn't find one, and the studio's roadmap deliberately contains no platform promises.

Unknown Worlds also hasn't named or dated the next content update. The roadmap only talks about regular improvement updates and, later, larger expansions to the world, biomes, creatures, resources, tools and vehicles.

โš ๏ธ Why there's no PlayStation version so far

There's no official explanation from Unknown Worlds. What does exist is a developer statement from the studio's Discord that the community passed around and gaming media picked up. Roughly: PlayStation currently has no Early Access program, so there's no news on a PS5 version. That's a community-relayed statement from a chat channel, not an official announcement. We mention it because it explains the situation plausibly, not because it guarantees anything.

Technically it makes sense: Xbox has had an established process for unfinished games in its store with Game Preview for years, while Sony has no comparable open program for Early Access titles. A game that the studio expects to stay in development for another two to three years simply doesn't fit the PlayStation Store model.

The series history also shows that the first game followed exactly this pattern, and how long it took.

๐Ÿ“Š How long the original Subnautica took to reach PlayStation

Subnautica: Steam Early AccessDecember 16, 2014PC

Subnautica: console releaseDecember 4, 2018PS4 and Xbox One
Subnautica: next-gen versionMay 14, 2021PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch

For the first game, about four years passed between the start of Early Access and the first PlayStation version, and the PS4 release only came after the finished 1.0. A native PS5 edition took almost six and a half years. That's not a promise or a forecast for Subnautica 2, but it shows why there's nothing to report right now.

๐ŸŽฎ What Xbox and PC players get instead

On Xbox Series X|S, Subnautica 2 has been in the store as a Game Preview title since May 14, 2026. It's included in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, explicitly not in the Game Pass Essential and Premium tiers. If you own an Xbox Series X|S or a PC, you can get in without a separate purchase as long as the right subscription is active.

The Early Access price is $29.99. Unknown Worlds itself says the price will go up once Early Access ends, so buying now is cheaper and includes all updates at no extra cost. The studio has ruled out microtransactions, a battle pass and loot boxes.

On PC the entry bar is moderate. Steam lists a Core i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 2600, 12 GB of RAM and a GTX 1660 with 6 GB as the minimum, and a Core i7-13700 or Ryzen 7 7700X, 16 GB RAM and an RTX 3070 as recommended. You need 50 GB of storage.

Co-op supports up to four players online, with crossplay between PC and Xbox Series X|S, but no split-screen and no PlayStation. The game stays fully playable solo.

๐ŸŒŠ These Subnautica games run on PS5

Subnautica 2 isn't on PS5, but both predecessors run as native PlayStation 5 versions, not just through backward compatibility. Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero got their own next-gen versions on May 14, 2021, with a 4K option, a 60 fps performance mode and haptic feedback on the DualSense controller.

Handy detail: if you own the digital PS4 version, you get the PS5 version for free. The PlayStation Store purchase covers downloading both editions. With a disc copy this only works on a PS5 with a disc drive, not on the Digital Edition.

For PS5 owners new to the series, that's the most sensible way in. Both games are finished, complete games with a full story, unlike Subnautica 2, which will be under construction for years. If the genre appeals to you in general, there's more on console: our look at The Planet Crafter on PS5 shows how a similar survival and base-building game holds up on PlayStation.

๐Ÿ’ก What Early Access means here

Unknown Worlds itself expects the Early Access phase to last about two to three years, based on its earlier projects. Counting from the start date, that puts version 1.0 somewhere between 2028 and 2029 at the earliest, and only after that would a console expansion even be realistic. That's not confirmed, just the studio's time estimate combined with the launch date.

In practice Early Access means: content keeps coming, systems change, and saves can be affected by larger reworks. By early September 2026 three milestones had shipped: Early Access 1.1 "Adaptive Measures" on July 8, 2026, Early Access 1.2 "Buddy System" on August 19, 2026, and its Hotfix 1 on September 1, 2026, which among other things fixed missing translations in PDA and databank entries.

Since August 12, 2026 there has also been an Experimental Branch on Steam and Xbox for testing upcoming changes early. That cadence is the real reason a port to a third platform makes no sense right now: every version would have to keep pace with it. What the current build already offers is covered in our guides to Subnautica 2 biomes, vehicles and base building.

๐Ÿ›’ Wait, switch platforms or play the predecessors?

You have three realistic options. One: stay on PS5 and play the two finished predecessors. No risk, no subscription, no construction site. Two: jump in on PC through PC Game Pass, which works without paying full price as long as your PC meets the minimum requirements. Three: buy it on Steam for $29.99 now, because the price goes up later.

What you shouldn't do is fall for supposed PS5 pre-orders or key offers for a PlayStation version. There is no PlayStation product for Subnautica 2, so there can't be a legitimate key for one either.

โ“ Subnautica 2 PS5 FAQ

Is Subnautica 2 coming to PS5?

Nothing has been announced. Neither Unknown Worlds nor Krafton has confirmed a PlayStation 5 version, and there's no time frame. Any date floating around beyond that is unconfirmed.

Can I play Subnautica 2 on PS4 or PS5 through backward compatibility?

No. There's no PlayStation version at all, so there's nothing that could run through backward compatibility. Only PC and Xbox Series X|S are supported.

Which Subnautica games run on PlayStation 5?

Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero, both as native PS5 versions since May 14, 2021, with a 60 fps mode and DualSense haptics. If you own the digital PS4 version, you get the PS5 version at no extra cost.

Is Subnautica 2 on Xbox Game Pass?

Yes, in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass since the Early Access launch. It's not included in the Essential and Premium tiers.

Is it worth buying now?

If you have a PC or Xbox and enjoy building in Early Access, yes: the $29.99 price goes up after Early Access, and all updates are included. If you want a finished game, you're looking at several years of waiting.

Is there crossplay between PC and PlayStation?

No. Crossplay works between PC and Xbox Series X|S. Since there's no PlayStation version, Subnautica 2 on PS5 isn't a co-op option either.

As of October 8, 2026: we found no PlayStation announcement up to this date. Official sources for Subnautica 2 are the Steam store page, the game's Steam news feed and the roadmap and update posts on unknownworlds.com. Platform details for the two predecessors come from the PlayStation Store. We could not fully check the news feed for updates released after September 1, 2026.

Not officially confirmed: the historical release dates of the series in the table above, which come from freely editable encyclopedia entries. There's no official Subnautica 2 wiki; wiki.subnautica.com is a freely editable community wiki (Weird Gloop, CC BY-NC-SA) and doesn't count as an official source.

Also community information only: the statement from the studio Discord, picked up by gaming media, that PlayStation currently has no Early Access program. Since the game is in Early Access, the list of platforms can change.
