Without Subnautica 2 power, your base is just a flooded tin can: no oxygen, no Fabricator, no Metal Farm. Four sources keep you running, the Solar Panel, Hydroelectric Turbine, Bioreactor and Thermal Plant, and each one has a depth and a stage of the game where it works.
This guide shows which source fits when, how storage and transmitters work together and which energy bugs Unknown Worlds has officially fixed. That last part might save you a complete rebuild.
Game version: Buddy System Hotfix 2 from October 6, 2026. Subnautica 2 has been in Early Access on Windows PC and Xbox Series X|S since May 14, 2026. There's no PlayStation version.
โก What Uses Power in Your Base
Subnautica 2 power isn't a comfort feature, it's a survival question. A sealed base only produces oxygen when it has energy. If the supply drops while you're inside, your air ticks down just like it does in open water, only without a way up.
Then there are the active consumers: the Fabricator, chargers, grow bed lighting and above all the Metal Farm, which simply produces nothing without energy. This is where a misconception lasted a long time, because the module kept running even though the display said energy was missing. The "Buddy System" update fixed that, so now your farm really stops when the juice runs out.
Remember the order: generation first, then storage, then consumers. If you put down the Metal Farm first and think about energy afterward, you'll build twice.
โ๏ธ The Four Subnautica 2 Power Sources and When They Fit
All four generators are in the game, but they differ a lot in effort and reliability. The output values in this table come from the community-run Subnautica wiki and fan guides. They're community data, because Unknown Worlds doesn't publish official numbers.
| Source | Output (community data) | Requirement | Game stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solar Panel | about 1โ8 energy/sec, less at night | shallow water, daylight | start |
| Hydroelectric Turbine | about 12 energy/sec, constant | strong current | midgame |
| Bioreactor | about 1โ20 energy/sec, depending on fuel | organic matter inside | midgame |
| Thermal Plant | highest steady output | heat source within range | late game |
The practical rule behind it is simple. Solar Panels are cheap and available right away, but they only suit your shallow starter base and drop off at night. Two of them run lights and a Fabricator, nothing more.
The Hydroelectric Turbine is the first real step up, because its output doesn't depend on time of day or depth. But it has to sit right in a visible current, and that's rarely where you want to live. So every turbine needs a chain of transmitters back to your base.
The Bioreactor is the most flexible source, because it stands anywhere inside and can deliver a lot more for a while. The price is restocking: it eats fish, plants and blocks. The Thermal Plant is the end-game solution for deep bases, but it needs late-game materials and a heat source nearby.
๐ง Recipes, and Where Fan Guides Disagree
Here's a data point you won't find in most guides: the recipes floating around don't agree. For the Bioreactor, one source lists two Titanium Ingots and two Copper Ingots, another lists no recipe at all. For the Solar Panel, two independent guides agree on 1 Titanium and 2 Quartz.
| Module | Recipe (community data, disputed) |
|---|---|
| Solar Panel | 1 Titanium and 2 Quartz |
| Hydroelectric Turbine | 3 Titanium, 3 Copper and 3 Silver |
| Bioreactor | 2 Titanium Ingots and 2 Copper Ingots |
| Thermal Plant | 3 Titanium, 3 Copper and 3 Gold |
| Power Storage | 1 Germanium Ingot, 3 Titanium and 2 Salt |
| Power Transmitter | 1 Titanium and 1 Copper |
So treat these numbers as a guideline, not a shopping list. What counts is always what your Fabricator shows in-game, because amounts shift with every Early Access update. Where each resource is found is covered in our Subnautica 2 biomes guide.
๐ Storage, Transmitters and Chargers
Generation alone isn't enough. Storage is your buffer for the night and for load spikes: it soaks up what Solar Panels produce in excess during the day and hands it back when nothing is coming in. Without a buffer, a solar-only base runs dry every night.
A transmitter bridges distance. It passes energy along a chain, and that's how you hook up a turbine sitting in a current to a base 100 meters away in calm water. Keep the links close enough together. If the chain breaks at one point, the whole outside setup goes dark.
The Battery Terminal and Power Cell Terminal recharge batteries and cells from your base grid. They're the reason a surplus pays off: every charged cell is more dive time.
๐ฉน Six Energy Bugs That Are Officially Fixed
This is the most useful part of the guide. Several stubborn energy problems weren't layout mistakes but bugs, and they're listed in the official patch notes for the "Buddy System" update from August 19, 2026, one of them in Hotfix 2 from October 6, 2026. If you recognize one of these symptoms, your layout wasn't to blame.
| Symptom | Officially fixed |
|---|---|
| Hydroturbines stop producing power after 120 to 160 minutes of gameplay | yes |
| Solar Panels stop providing power after 45 to 60 minutes when there are multiple bases | yes |
| Bases stay supplied even though their Power Storage is empty | yes |
| Thermal and Hydroelectric Generators lose power or show incorrect power after being streamed out and back into the world | yes, with Hotfix 2 from October 6, 2026 |
| Metal Farms keep producing while the UI says energy is missing | yes |
| Metal Farms connected in a series lose power once the first one finishes production | yes |
Two more fixes affect the Bioreactor directly: Algae Blocks and Nutrient Blocks couldn't be used as fuel, and the reactor burned fuel immediately even when set to Off. Both are fixed as well. If you avoided the Bioreactor because it swallowed material, give it another chance.
The takeaway is unspectacular but effective: play on the current build. If your base goes dark after a good hour, an outdated client is more likely than a generator that's too small.
๐ Plan Subnautica 2 Power by Depth
Your choice of source in Subnautica 2 depends almost entirely on where you build. In the shallow starting zone, solar plus a buffer is enough. As soon as you move to middle depths, solar is practically out, and you need a turbine or a Bioreactor.
For deep outposts, you're left with the Thermal Plant or a well-fed Bioreactor. Plan that before you move: a deep base without energy seals in no oxygen, and you'll notice exactly when you're standing inside it.
One trick: connect deep outposts by transmitter to a shallower setup with stable generation instead of building a second generator down below. That saves material and keeps hull integrity under control. More on that in our Subnautica 2 base building guide.
๐ค Coordinating Power in Co-op
In multiplayer, energy quickly turns into a sore spot, because everyone can build. Three players switching on a Fabricator, a charger and a Metal Farm at the same time will drain a small solar setup in minutes. Decide beforehand who expands generation.
One simple rule works well in practice: whoever places a new energy-hungry module places an extra source or storage at the same time. If you're switching a world between solo and co-op, our guide to Subnautica 2 save files shows how converting works.
๐ก The Build Plan in Short
- Phase 1, shallow: two Solar Panels and one storage unit. Enough for lights, oxygen and a Fabricator.
- Phase 2, mid-depth: a Hydroelectric Turbine in the nearest current, linked to the base by a transmitter chain.
- Phase 3, flexible: a Bioreactor inside as a reserve, fed with plants and blocks.
- Phase 4, deep: a Thermal Plant at a heat source, small outposts linked by transmitter.
- Always: only build chargers once you have a real surplus.
โ Subnautica 2 Power FAQ
Why has my base in Subnautica 2 stopped producing oxygen?
Because it has no energy. Check your storage first, then the transmitter chain, and finally make sure your game is on the current build (Buddy System Hotfix 2). Several outages were officially confirmed bugs.
What's the best power source in Subnautica 2?
There's no single best one, just the right one for each depth. Solar in the shallows, a Hydroelectric Turbine at mid-depth, a Thermal Plant deep down, plus the Bioreactor as a reserve that works anywhere.
Why did my Hydroelectric Turbine suddenly stop working?
That was a known bug: turbines stopped producing after 120 to 160 minutes of gameplay. Unknown Worlds fixed it with "Buddy System". Buddy System Hotfix 2 from October 6, 2026 also fixed Hydroelectric Turbines producing incorrect power after being streamed out and back into the world.
How far does a transmitter reach?
It passes energy along a chain, so you can hook up distant turbines too. Unknown Worlds doesn't give an official range in meters. When in doubt, place the links closer together.
What do I feed the Bioreactor?
Organic matter: plants, fish, Algae Blocks and Nutrient Blocks. The "Buddy System" update specifically fixed the two block types so they work as fuel.
Are the recipe amounts in this guide guaranteed?
No. Unknown Worlds doesn't publish an official materials list. All amounts and output values here are community data from fan guides that partly contradict each other, and they can change with any Early Access update.
Checked as of October 2026, game version Buddy System Hotfix 2 from October 6, 2026. The generator and turbine fix from Hotfix 2 is confirmed in its patch notes. Every other bug fix in this guide is officially confirmed in the Unknown Worlds patch notes for the "Buddy System" update from August 19, 2026.
Those fixes cover the Hydroturbine outage after 120 to 160 minutes, the Solar Panel outage after 45 to 60 minutes with multiple bases, bases staying supplied with empty storage, Metal Farms producing despite a power warning, Metal Farms in a series losing power, and the two Bioreactor fixes. Platforms and Early Access start are also officially confirmed.
Community data, not officially confirmed: all recipe amounts, all output values in energy per second, the depth and game stage assignments for the four sources and the Power Transmitter's range. These values come from fan guides and the community-run Subnautica wiki, which partly contradict each other. What the game shows always has the final say.
