- ๐ Bottom line
"So what is Cogah and how does it work?" That question pops up in Soulframe chats all the time, and not just from new players. Even people with more than a week of playtime have to be told that the Soulframe Cogah is simply the game's hard mode. That's not on the players: Soulframe barely explains the mode anywhere in game. This guide fills that gap, as of Preludes 16.
๐ฉธ What is the Cogah in Soulframe?
The Cogah is an alternate game mode and Soulframe's take on a hard mode. You don't switch it on in a menu. You drink a brew: the Cogah elixir. Once it kicks in, the night sky over Midrath turns a dreary maroon, and the world gets much harder, and much more rewarding.
Behind it is an ancient Fey war ritual. According to the lore, Fey warriors drank a brew of Agaric and Wevetwood Sap made by their witches before the hunt, so they could hunt the Agari stupored and strengthened at the same time. Your Envoy carries that ritual on.
The big catch: a single death ends the Cogah. You're sent back to the Nightfold, the elixir's effect is gone and you need a new one. There's no time limit, but there's no way to resume either, and logging out also ends the trance.
โ๏ธ What the Soulframe Cogah actually changes
The mode doesn't just bump a damage number. It changes the whole session:
| Area | What happens |
|---|---|
| ๐น Enemies | Much stronger, regular mobs included. They're raised to level 50 and gain further levels as you slay Agari or Siege bosses |
| โ ๏ธ Drawbacks | Per the community wiki, Arcanics take twice as long to recharge, Smite chance drops, you withstand less Stagger, Life Elixirs barely drop and self-healing is reduced |
| ๐ Loot | Better drops, and some items only drop here |
| ๐บ๏ธ Map | Goes mostly empty and basically only shows the Agari |
| ๐ซ Fast travel | World Trees and Enclaves are no longer marked, so you walk |
| ๐ Votives | Per the community wiki, only Enclave Votives are disabled. All other Votives stay playable |
| โ๏ธ Weapons | Per the Preludes 15 patch notes, weapons looted under the Cogah have a higher chance of better Craftwork |
That last point hardly ever comes up in discussions, but it's one of the best reasons to light the Cogah at all. It's not just more loot, it's better quality on the same weapons. You can then reforge a weapon like that to suit your build.
๐งช Unlocking the Soulframe Cogah through Verminia
The person you need isn't the blacksmith Tuvalkane but the witch Verminia, the Brewer of Hues. Many players only know her for palettes and transmog and miss that the hard mode runs through her too. The steps:
- Recruit Verminia. She joins your Nightfold through the Fable "Brewer of Hues". If she's still missing for you, that's step one.
- Reach Bond rank 2 with her. Just like with Tuvalkane, the Bond grows when you craft with her, meaning you brew palettes (Hues) and elixirs. Below rank 2 the Cogah recipe doesn't show up, even with every ingredient in your inventory.
- Finish "A Witch Withdrawn". It starts when Verminia is no longer at her spot in the Nightfold after you log back in. Read the note she left, play the short quest and bring her back.
๐ก For troubleshooting: if the Cogah recipe doesn't appear at Verminia, it's almost always one of those three points, not missing ingredients. The game gives you no hint about it.
๐ Brewing the Soulframe Cogah elixir
Once the requirements are met, the Avakot community wiki lists this recipe: 8 Wevetwood Sap, 3 Agaric and 500 Dracs, with a brewing time of 30 minutes. About the two ingredients:
- Agaric: it grows at the corpse of every Agari you kill. You pick it up while farming bosses.
- Wevetwood Sap: the stumbling block. It doesn't lie around in the landscape like other plant resources. Per the wiki you harvest it with a Sap Tap from trees around the Wevetwood, 2 to 3 sap per tree. Verminia gives you the Sap Tap during "The Waste Bear". Amber Deposits in the Neath'uns also yield sap.
You brew at Verminia's cauldron in the Nightfold. Per the wiki brewing takes 30 minutes of real time and can be sped up with Arcs. You can hold up to 100 Cogah elixirs in your inventory, so a stockpile is worth it.
โน๏ธ What ends the Soulframe Cogah early
It's worth looking closely here, because a broken Cogah means a lost elixir:
| Trigger | Ends the Cogah? |
|---|---|
| ๐ Envoy death | Yes, you return to the Nightfold |
| ๐ Logging out or relogging | Yes, the state doesn't carry over between sessions |
| ๐ Fleeing a fight with an Agari | Yes, if all Envoys flee |
| ๐ณ๏ธ Surrendering a Siege | Yes |
| ๐ฟ Entering the Eternium Gardens | Yes |
| ๐ Fleeing an Organ or Collector | No, the ritual continues |
Two details worth knowing: entering and leaving a dungeon resets enemy levels back to 50. And there's a known account bug where some players get no new Cogah notes in their Journal despite drinking the elixir, killing Agari and seeing the wake-up animation. That isn't a mistake on your end.
๐ฆ What you actually farm in the Soulframe Cogah
The Cogah isn't an end in itself. It's a farming loop around the Agari, the named bosses of the open world that respawn 30 minutes after death according to the Avakot community wiki. Under the Cogah they have their own loot pool. Where to find them is in our Soulframe world bosses guide.
- Materials: one example from the wiki is Gruul-Seeker Ruthos. Under the Cogah he drops Agaric, Glow, Amber and Faer Lampyrite, Baskbulb, Sineculum, Sinners' Stratagem and Dracs, among others. Loot differs from Agari to Agari.
- Runes: per the wiki, every Combat Art has its own Cogah Rune, such as The Torrent (Bows), Treefell (Heavy), Splitbolt (Polearms) or The Hollowing (Magick). They only drop from Agari under the Cogah. More in the Soulframe Runes guide.
- The Cogah Lorcaan: a talisman (+2 Courage) that only gives extra bonuses during the Cogah. According to the community wiki, the bonus grows with every Agari you fell in the Cogah. Per the community wiki it's crafted from 3 Fragments that only Cogah enemies drop, one Sacred Shimmer and 2,500 Dracs, with a crafting time of one day.
- Epithets since Preludes 16: the game hands out names for legendary weapons for beating Cogah Agari, in a group too. "Of The Sleeve" comes from 10 Cogah Agari, and there are boss-specific titles as well, such as "Carver" for Kabocha or "Tormenatus" for Gruul-Seeker Ruthos.
๐ก Soulframe Cogah tips for getting started
- Stock elixirs first, then start. Every death costs one, so you don't want to run back to brew after your first mistake.
- Position yourself first. Fast travel is locked in the Cogah. Walk to your target area, then drink, not the other way around.
- Check your Virtues. Against level 50 enemies, a weapon whose requirement you don't meet punishes you right away. Details in the Soulframe Virtues guide.
- Time your Smites. Arcanics recharge twice as slowly under the Cogah, so every Smite that speeds them up counts. See the Smite guide.
โ FAQ: Soulframe Cogah
Is the Cogah a mode or an item?
Both, and they're linked: the Cogah is the mode, and the Cogah elixir is the item that activates it.
Can I play the Cogah in co-op?
Yes, solo or in a group. Per the wiki, all party members must be present before the elixir is drunk; nobody can join a running ritual. A relog won't put you back into the session either. Per the patch notes, the matchmaking added in Preludes 16 doesn't work under the Cogah, so invite your teammates directly. More in the Soulframe co-op guide.
Why doesn't the Cogah recipe show up at Verminia?
Because you're missing Bond rank 2 with her or haven't finished "A Witch Withdrawn". Ingredients alone aren't enough.
Do I lose progress if I die in the Cogah?
No, only the elixir's effect. You land in the Nightfold and need a new elixir for your next attempt.
Is the Cogah worth it for beginners?
It's meant as an endgame activity. Before that, basics and gear pay off more, and the Soulframe beginner guide is a good starting point.
๐ Bottom line
The Soulframe Cogah is the hard mode the game never explains: a red-tinted ritual that raises enemies to level 50, takes away fast travel and your map, and pays you back with better loot and higher Craftwork on looted weapons. The key isn't the blacksmith but Verminia: Bond rank 2 and "A Witch Withdrawn". Once you've unlocked it, the Agari give you a 30-minute farming loop that carries the rest of the endgame.
