A strong Soulframe Ode Tempest build since Preludes 16 runs on Spirit, the new lightning staff Gystalt and the rune The Hollowing. Astra Sphere and Atmos Sphere keep enemies off you while you build rune charge, then you clear whole groups with one explosion.
One thing up front: the in-game descriptions of Ode Tempest's abilities don't match what they actually do. This guide explains the real effects, how to unlock the pact, the Gystalt mechanics and the full build.
⚡ How to unlock Ode Tempest
Ode Tempest is one of the oldest pacts in Soulframe: its update history on the community wiki goes back to the early Preludes in 2024. You don't get it through a quest. You buy the fragment from one of two factions or for Arcs at the Wares of Zenith. How pacts work in general is in our Soulframe Pacts guide.
| Source | Price | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Alca's Children | 27,500 Favour | Rank 5 “Alora's Ward” |
| Silent Rose | 27,500 Favour | Rank 5 “Silent Saboteur” |
| Wares of Zenith | 215 Arcs (per the community wiki) | none |
Favour was called Standing until Preludes 16. Take the fragment to Tuvalkane. The community-run wiki at wiki.avakot.org lists the crafting cost as 55 Scrap Brass, 30 Ode Graphite, 15 Sappheline and 5,000 Dracs, plus Bond rank 3 with the smith and a 27-hour crafting time. These values are not officially confirmed.
🌀 The three Arcanics: what they really do
Like every pact, Ode Tempest fills all three Arcanic slots, one per Virtue: Courage, Spirit and Grace. The abilities are Seismor, Astra Sphere and Atmos Sphere. Cooldowns per the community wiki:
| Arcanic | Virtue | Cooldown | Actual effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seismor | Courage | 34 s | rolling sphere pushes enemies away, damage while rolling, explosion at the end |
| Astra Sphere | Spirit | 44 s | zone with stagger damage and a Stability debuff, no Voltaic damage bonus |
| Atmos Sphere | Grace | 45 s | more armor, immune to stagger, reflects hits as stagger |
Seismor: open ground only
More Courage means a longer roll, more damage and a bigger explosion. Bosses get pushed too, just not as far. The sphere rolls through walls and most objects. Enemies, on the other hand, get stuck on them and take no further damage. So use Seismor on open ground, not in cramped camps.
Astra Sphere: stagger instead of lightning damage
The in-game description says enemies in the storm take extra Voltaic damage. In reality they take stagger damage on cast, and anyone entering the zone gets a Stability debuff. According to measurements by the wiki community, the debuff lasts 15 seconds and can outlast the sphere itself. What stagger and Stability mean is explained in our parry and stagger guide.
Atmos Sphere: a shield that hits back
The sphere protects you and nearby allies for about 20 seconds. It raises armor, makes you immune to stagger and reflects attacks back at the attacker as stagger damage. These reflections can trigger Smite, more in the Smite guide. Per the wiki, Grace increases how many hits the shield absorbs. Every hit uses up a charge, including damage over time like fire.
If you stand in your Astra Sphere with Atmos Sphere active, the two link up. Reflections then hit all enemies inside the Astra Sphere's radius, per the wiki. The creator of the video this guide builds on calls the combination unreliable, though.
🔩 Lightning Strike and Gravitate
The pact's two passives also do something different from what they say:
- Lightning Strike doesn't trigger on every downed enemy, only on a ground finisher. That rarely happens, and ground finishers hit hard anyway. Your points are better spent elsewhere.
- Gravitate turns your kick into a grappling hook. If you kick toward an enemy from a distance, you pull yourself up to about 14 meters toward them, per the wiki, and your next attack deals extra Voltaic damage. You need at least one point in Gravitate for this.
The Gravitate bonus only applies to melee hits and thrown melee weapons. Magick staves, Flyblades and bow shots don't benefit, with one exception: the heavy melee attack of the Avex bow. The hook itself makes no noise, so it also works for sneaking up on enemies.
🔢 The problem: hidden stagger values
Stagger and Stability have fixed numbers in Soulframe, but the UI doesn't show them. You only see the stagger bar, and it's too coarse to read anything from. Whether a Temper or a Totem makes the difference can't be planned precisely.
The wiki community has measured a reference point: enemies under the Astra Sphere debuff take about 2.5 + Spirit / 30 times as much stagger damage. With 60 Spirit that would be roughly 4.5 times. The formula is not officially confirmed, but it explains why a Spirit build works so well with Ode Tempest. More on the stats in the Soulframe Virtues guide.
🔮 Gystalt: the new lightning staff from Preludes 16
Gystalt is an Ode'n Magick staff with Voltaic damage that arrived with Preludes 16 “Of Hook and Hound”. Per the wiki it drops from Ode'n Starcasters, Elite Ode'n Starcasters and Ode'n Conductors as well as Ode Chests and Ode Drone Rare Chests. It works differently from every other staff:
- Continuous fire: hold the light attack and the staff fires nonstop.
- Heavy attack: no projectile, but a lightning strike at the target. Fully charged, it hits a small area around the target.
- Heat: after 10 light attacks the staff switches from its blue to its red state. A full heavy attack counts as 10 light ones, a half-charged one as 5.
- Red state: light attacks deal more damage and chain to one more enemy, which takes half damage. The wiki lists 1.2x damage for light and 1.5x for heavy attacks.
- Overheat: the 30th attack in a row makes your Envoy stagger back, and the staff is unusable for 3 seconds.
- Discharge: if you press block on the 30th attack instead, the heat releases as an explosion around you. The staff is ready again immediately or after at most a second.
Base damage is extremely low at 12 at rank 0 and rises to 60 at rank 30. The video creator ran the scaling numbers and still comes out at very good damage. One catch: the game gives no warning before a full overheat, and the glow at max heat is easy to miss in combat.
Known bug: Gystalt can't trigger rope pulleys that you normally activate with a ranged attack. In Fort Curlail you won't get further without a sidearm.
🛠️ The Soulframe Ode Tempest build with Gystalt and Odiac
The idea is simple. Astra Sphere and Atmos Sphere keep you alive while you build rune charge. With full charge you throw fully charged Hollowing casts and clear the field. Seismor buys you space when both spheres are on cooldown.
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pact | Ode Tempest | protection and stagger debuff |
| Virtues | as much Spirit as possible | Arcanic cooldowns, Astra Sphere, Magick damage |
| Main weapon | Gystalt with The Hollowing | marks every enemy in the area |
| Sidearm | Odiac with Archstorm | backup weapon when you overheat |
| Tempers | Arcane Alacrity, Arcane Barrage, Bypass | faster charging, heavy cast, armor penetration |
| Totems (Gystalt) | Dewclawer, Rivers Revive, Stocky Lodge, Quick Drey | rune damage, healing, armor, attack speed |
| Talisman | Sproutfolk Shoot | +6 Spirit |
| Armor | Pensive set | named by the video creator as the best Spirit armor right now |
Gear: talisman, armor and Dewclawer
Sproutfolk Shoot gives +6 Spirit. Per the community wiki, Alca's Children sells the fragment from rank 3 “Honorary Sproutfolk” for 7,500 Favour. The video creator wears the Direskull instead, purely for looks: it gives +4 Grace and +1 each to Courage and Spirit, so it doesn't fit a Spirit build.
The video creator calls the Pensive set (Pensive's Bonnet, Pensive's Cloak, Pensive's Pantaloons) the best Spirit armor right now. You get the fragments for the chapters in Orlick's Sanctuary and forge them at Tuvalkane. The armor values are low, but the set is worth it for its Virtue alignment.
Dewclawer is a hare Totem that permanently raises the rune damage of the weapon it sits on: by 5, 8, 10 or 15 percent, and up to 23 percent with a matching weapon grip. Per the wiki it did nothing for almost all of Preludes 15 and only works again since Preludes 16.
Why The Hollowing belongs on the Gystalt
The Hollowing marks enemies you hit. At max rank the mark explodes after three more hits for 300 percent damage. At rank 0 it takes six hits. The Gystalt's full heavy attack marks every enemy in its area. With normal staves you have to catch enemies in a line for that. The rune is only available in the Cogah, see our Cogah guide.
Archstorm also boosts the heavy attack a lot, but on the Gystalt it loses one advantage: there's no projectile flying through several enemies. That's why Archstorm is better on the Odiac. How runes charge in general is explained in the Soulframe Runes guide.
How to play the build in combat
- At the start of a fight, build rune charge on the Odiac.
- Switch to the Gystalt. The Odiac's charge stays as long as you're in combat.
- Drop Astra Sphere and Atmos Sphere and use full heavy attacks. Their high stagger damage works especially well on enemies with the Astra Sphere debuff.
- With full charge, throw a fully charged Hollowing cast.
- If the Gystalt overheats anyway, swap to the Odiac and fire Archstorm as your panic button.
You don't need a Thunder Tail for extra stagger in this build, since the Gystalt handles that itself. The Tempers Swooning Blow and Galvanic Strike can also roll on the Gystalt. How much they add can't be said without visible stagger numbers. More on the Temper system in the Soulframe Tempers guide.
🗡️ Alternative: melee build with Gravitate
If you prefer getting up close, build Ode Tempest around Grace and use Gravitate as a gap closer. The spheres and Totems with area stagger set enemies up for finishers, and the grappling hook gets you to the next target before the window closes. The video creator uses the short blade Rostrum, Flyblades as a sidearm and the rune The Flitsmoke for this. In that setup you are really only using the pact for its hook.
⚠️ Weaknesses of the build
- Long cooldowns: with over 40 seconds on both spheres you're unprotected in between, which really shows in the Cogah.
- Hidden numbers: stagger damage and Stability stay hidden, so you can only fine-tune the build by feel.
- Boss bug: per the video, the Gystalt's light attacks don't trigger The Hollowing on some bosses. Heavy attacks and a second Hollowing cast work.
During thunderstorms, Voltaic damage goes up according to the Preludes 16 patch notes. Digital Extremes doesn't say by how much. The video creator mentions 10 percent, which is not confirmed.
❓ Soulframe Ode Tempest build FAQ
Where do I get Ode Tempest in Soulframe?
From Alca's Children or Silent Rose at rank 5 for 27,500 Favour each, or for 215 Arcs at the Wares of Zenith per the community wiki. Tuvalkane then crafts the pact.
Does Astra Sphere really deal Voltaic damage?
No. Despite its description it deals stagger damage and lowers enemy Stability.
Does Gravitate work with Magick staves?
The grappling hook does, the damage bonus doesn't. That only applies to melee hits and thrown melee weapons.
How do I keep the Gystalt from overheating?
Press block after 29 attacks in a row. The heat then releases as an explosion instead of locking the staff for 3 seconds.
Which rune fits the Gystalt in Soulframe?
The Hollowing, because the full heavy attack marks every enemy in the area. Archstorm fits better on the Odiac.
