Soulframe runes are enchantments you slot into the central Enchantment slot of a weapon or sidearm and then fire off on demand with Rune Charge earned in combat. Each weapon holds exactly one rune, and you rank it up with Harmonies at the Arsenal in the Nightfold. This guide covers where runes drop, how to equip them, and which picks make sense at each stage of the game.
Quick context first: Soulframe from Digital Extremes is still in its pre-release phase called "Soulframe Preludes", which the developer itself calls a pre-alpha. The latest major update is Preludes 16 "Of Hook and Hound" from September 18, 2026, which changed how Rune Charge works (more on that below). We checked the rune values in this guide against the community wiki on wiki.avakot.org (Preludes 16 with Hotfix 6). They can shift with any update.
โ๏ธ What Are Soulframe Runes?
A rune is an enchantment for the central Enchantment slot of a weapon. Each one belongs to a specific Combat Art: Short Blades, Heavy weapons, Polearms, Bows, and the sidearms Flyblades and Magick.
The effect isn't always on. Since the rune rework in Preludes 14 you build up Rune Charge and trigger the rune when you choose. On PC there's a dedicated Rune key (added in Preludes 14.5, unbound by default), or you use Spectral Sight plus Heavy Attack. Every activation uses one charge. According to the community wiki, a rank 3 rune holds four charges. Most Soulframe runes fire instantly, but Treefell, The Durglint and The Flitsmoke run over a duration for as long as their charge lasts.
New since Preludes 16: per the patch notes, runes now also charge when you attack enemies, and that scales with Spirit. A Pull Smite gives less charge than before in return. Outside of combat, runes slowly lose their charge, so hoarding it doesn't pay off.
How Runes Differ From Warframe Mods
If you come from Warframe, your first thought about Soulframe runes will be mods. That's misleading. Three differences matter:
- One slot instead of eight. Warframe has you stacking lots of mods and juggling capacity and polarities. Here each weapon holds exactly one rune. No capacity system is documented for runes.
- Locked to a weapon type. Every rune belongs to one Combat Art. Treefell only works on Heavy weapons, The Torrent only on Bows. A Warframe mod, by contrast, fits any weapon in its category.
- Rank means something different. In Warframe a mod rank raises a number. Per the wiki, rune rank also sets how many charges you can bank.
One handy detail: according to the wiki, a rune doesn't need to be copied or moved. A Polearm rune on one polearm can be used on another polearm at the same time.
๐ฆ Where Do You Get Soulframe Runes?
According to the community wiki, runes mainly come from Agari and Sieges across Midrath, and lately from chests and containers too. Some only drop inside The Cogah. None of the runes listed here can be bought in the Wares of Zenith:
- Agari in Midrath. Most known runes drop from the Agari, the named sub-bosses of the open world. Per the wiki they respawn 30 minutes after death, so a farm loop over several of them is the normal route.
- Sieges and containers. Archstorm and Hurlwind, for example, also drop from Sieges (Mirifuir and Fort Curlail) and various chests per the wiki. Since Preludes 14 Hotfix 5 runes can also drop from sap pods in the Neath'uns and from sarcophagi in the Crypt of the Circade.
- The Cogah. This harder mode has its own exclusive runes. The Torrent, for example, drops from the Agari Gruul-Seeker Ruthos only inside The Cogah. Treefell, Splitbolt and The Hollowing are Cogah-only too, according to the wiki.
Quest rewards or fixed vendors as a rune source aren't documented as of October 2026, so we don't list them.
๐ฏ Equipping Runes at the Arsenal
You equip and upgrade Soulframe runes at the Arsenal in the Nightfold, your hub. The wiki names the Nightfold as the place where upgrading happens. The flow: pick a weapon, open its Enchantments, place the rune in the central slot.
There's always one rune per weapon. And here's the part most guides skip: the rune also changes your totem layout.
| Weapon state | Available totem slots |
|---|---|
| no central rune | 3 base slots |
| with a central rune | 3 base slots plus 1 extra slot |
The key twist: the rune decides which Virtue that fourth slot belongs to. Since the totem rework in Preludes 15, every totem slot is tied to a Virtue. A totem in a matching slot gets a bonus that scales with that Virtue. According to the community wiki, Emberaught unlocks a Courage slot, Archstorm a Spirit slot and Splitbolt a Grace slot.
The old Attack, Defence and Utility slot types belong to the totem system before Preludes 15. One more Preludes 16 change: per the patch notes, totems now only activate while the weapon is in your main hand.
๐ Upgrading Soulframe Runes With Harmonies
You rank up Soulframe runes with Harmonies. Per the wiki, you earn this currency three ways, and Preludes 16 added a fourth:
- Charming wild animals with the flute
- Freeing caged critters
- Releasing spare totems and runes from your inventory (per the community wiki you get back 75% of the Harmonies invested)
- Since Preludes 16, per the patch notes: releasing fish you've caught
The process is simple: select the rune at the Arsenal and confirm the upgrade, which only works in the Nightfold. According to the community wiki there are four tiers, rank 0 to rank 3, and a rank 3 rune holds four charges. The wiki lists the cost as 5,000 Harmonies for rank 1, another 10,000 for rank 2 and another 20,000 for rank 3, or 35,000 per rune in total. Since Preludes 16 Hotfix 5, shift-click is disabled for multi-releasing runes, and the Compendium is turned off for runes.
Upgrade early or late? There's no official recommendation. The data points toward early and narrow: Harmonies come in on the side, and duplicate runes are only good for Harmonies anyway. The costly mistake is spreading Harmonies across five runes instead of getting the one rune for your main weapon type to rank 3. Only there do you reach both the top effect value and the full four charges.
๐บ๏ธ Documented Soulframe Runes at a Glance
This table only lists runes whose values, weapon type, totem slot and drop source each have their own page on the avakot community wiki. Values run from rank 0 to rank 3.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Emberaught | Short Blade | Heavy Strike with extra Flame damage, 100 to 250% | Courage | Fort Curlail Siege, Etheldred The Weaver, Rovgot Wyrm, Seachnall The Widower |
| Treefell | Heavy | Heavy Attacks charge 40 to 100% faster, longer reach, 10 to 70 armour penetration, 5 to 8 s | Courage | Cogah only: Sinecure-errant Vella, The Mendicant King |
| Splitbolt | Polearm | barrage of spears around the target, 40 to 100% weapon damage each | Grace | Cogah only: Gourdo, Kabocha |

๐ก Which Runes Are Worth It and How to Combine Them
There's no reliable tier list for Soulframe runes right now, and we won't invent one. A serious ranking needs official damage formulas, and in a pre-alpha that got two major updates and a string of hotfixes since June, it would be wrong within weeks. A selection checklist holds up better:
- Weapon type first, rune second. The question is never "which rune is best" but "which one fits the weapon I already play".
- Then the totem slot. If you can choose between two runes for the same weapon type, the deciding factor is which Virtue the fourth totem slot gets. For Magick, that's Archstorm (Spirit) or The Hollowing (Courage).
- Then your combat pace. If you build charge slowly, one big discharge serves you better than lots of small activations. Since Preludes 16, normal attacks charge runes as well, scaling with Spirit, while Pull Smite gives less. Out of combat the charge drains slowly. The basics are in our Soulframe Smite guide.
- Virtues last. Totems in a matching slot scale with that Virtue, and the rune sets the Virtue of the fourth slot. If you stack everything into one Virtue, pick the rune to match. How the three Virtues work is explained in Soulframe Virtues explained.
Early on, keep it simple: take the first rune that fits your main weapon and rank it up. Going from rank 0 to rank 3 gives every documented rune a much higher effect value and more charges.
โ ๏ธ Common Problems With Soulframe Runes
The rune won't equip. The usual cause is the weapon type lock: a Bow rune doesn't fit a Heavy weapon. Check the table above. The second cause is location. Equipping and upgrading happen at the Arsenal in the Nightfold, not out in the world.
The slot is missing. Each weapon only has the one central rune slot, and you can't unlock a second. If you mean a missing totem slot: the fourth one only appears once a rune sits in the center.
The upgrade fails. Three documented reasons: not enough Harmonies, you're not in the Nightfold, or the rune is already rank 3, which the community wiki lists as the max. If it still hangs after that, it's a technical issue.
โ Soulframe Runes FAQ
How many Soulframe runes can I equip at once?
Exactly one per weapon, in the central slot. Since your weapon and sidearm are equipped separately, several runes can be active at the same time, but never two on the same weapon.
Do I need to farm a rune twice for two weapons?
No. Per the wiki, a rune works on every compatible weapon without moving or duplicating it.
What do you upgrade Soulframe runes with?
Harmonies. You get them by charming wild animals with the flute, freeing caged critters and releasing spare totems and runes. Since Preludes 16 you also get them for releasing fish you've caught.
How many ranks does a rune have?
Four, according to the community wiki: rank 0 to rank 3. At rank 3 a rune holds four charges.
Are Soulframe runes the same as Warframe mods?
No. Runes sit alone in the central weapon slot, are locked to one weapon type and are triggered with Rune Charge, instead of permanently boosting stats like mods do.
Checked against Digital Extremes' official site soulframe.com, the official patch notes for Preludes 14 to 16 "Of Hook and Hound" including Hotfix 5 (Rune Charge and totem changes) and the community wiki on wiki.avakot.org (the Runes, Harmonies and Agari pages and each rune's own page). As of October 2026, Preludes 16 with Hotfix 6.
Effect values, slot types, costs and drop sources are community data, not part of official patch notes. Since Soulframe is a pre-alpha with frequent hotfixes, values can change on short notice. Undocumented sources such as vendors or quest rewards are left out.
