Soulframe is the fantasy game from Warframe developer Digital Extremes, and it's still in the Preludes, an early test phase that changes with every update. You notice that the moment you start: the game explains a lot only briefly or not at all. This Soulframe beginner guide gets you cleanly through the first hours, as of Preludes 16.
๐ Your First 30 Minutes
You play the Envoy, an exile returning to the world of Midrath. Do these things right at the start:
- Call your Sparrow: press G to call your Sparrow, a small flying companion that points you toward your next objective. If you get lost, it's your best friend.
- Recruit Tuvalkane: head east from the start, clear the enemies, pick up the helmet and follow the path to the forge. Tuvalkane is your blacksmith and unlocks crafting recipes. Get her as early as you can.
- Craft early: every item you craft raises your Bond with Tuvalkane. Bond 3 unlocks Pact crafting, an important milestone.
- Talk to every NPC: exhaust dialogue completely. Many NPCs give you permanent bonuses or start quests for it.
- Use Spectral Sight: hold the Spectral key (Q) to reveal hidden chests, Motes (glowing collectibles) and enemies you can Smite.
โ๏ธ Combat Basics
Combat in Soulframe is deliberately methodical and rewards timing over button mashing. It's closer to a soulslike than to a loot shooter. Four building blocks matter most:
- Parry and dodge: precise parrying and dodging are your main defense. A clean parry negates the hit completely, staggers the enemy briefly and opens a riposte window. Dodge rolls also give you invincibility frames, so roll through attacks, not away from them.
- Stagger: kicks, parries and charged sword strikes fill an enemy's stagger bar fastest. When it's full, the enemy reels or goes down, and that's your finisher window. Heavy weapons create the most stagger. Since Preludes 16, heavy attacks deal much more stagger than before, according to the patch notes. Every weapon shows its stagger value right in the tooltip.
- Spectral Sight: not just for exploring. It also exposes an enemy's soul and is your trigger for Smite.
- Smite: hold Spectral Sight (Q) and press the left mouse button on an exposed enemy to pull its soul for heavy damage. This mechanic is powerful, but the game barely explains it.
๐ก Preludes 16 also removed the startup delay on parries and toned down enemy magnetism, so timing matters more than ever.
โจ The Virtue System: Courage, Spirit and Grace
Soulframe has three core stats, the Virtues. Each one scales certain weapon types and also powers one of your three Pact Arcanic slots, the slots for your arcane abilities:
| Virtue | Weapon types | Arcanic slot |
|---|---|---|
| ๐ช Courage | Longblades, heavy weapons, polearms, shields | Slot 1 |
| ๐ฎ Spirit | Magick staves; also lowers Arcanic cooldowns | Slot 2 |
| ๐น Grace | Bows, shortblades, rapiers, Flyblades; reduces detection | Slot 3 |
You start with freely assignable Virtue points and get one more point per Envoy rank. Important: since Preludes 15 you can reassign the points for free per loadout. Experiment freely.
The most common beginner mistake here: your Virtue investment has to meet your weapon's Virtue requirement. The tooltip shows it as a fraction: "17/16" means you have 17 points against 16 required, so the requirement is met.
If it isn't, your number shows in red. If your Virtue value is below the requirement, you get no bonus at all. Not a partial bonus, zero. Some simple weapons have no Virtue requirement, and then the line is missing from the tooltip entirely.
๐ญ Pacts: Your "Classes"
Pacts determine your Arcanic abilities. They're Soulframe's version of classes, but they're not permanent. The three starting Pacts are Tethren, Sirin and Oscelda. None of them is tied to a single Virtue: according to the community wiki, every Pact has three Arcanics, the first scaling with Courage, the second with Spirit and the third with Grace. You unlock more Pacts through the story, the factions and Tuvalkane (from Bond 3). Try several until your playstyle clicks. Thanks to free reallocation, experimenting costs you nothing. The full list is in our Soulframe Pacts guide.
๐ฆ Understanding Materials and Loot
- Gossamer Quartz (a rare crafting material) is your most important early material for weapons, armor and Pacts. According to the community-maintained wiki on wiki.avakot.org, it comes from Dendrite chests and Collector crates, from enemies such as Nimrods, Mendicant Knights or Ode'n Wardogs, and from the merchant Avakot for 150 Dracs. Since Preludes 15 Hotfix 8 it no longer drops in the Crypt of the Circade. Don't spend it on cosmetics. Save it for weapons and Pacts.
- History Motes are glowing collectibles that unlock entries about locations. Don't confuse them with the old Mote upgrade system, which according to the wiki was replaced by Runes and Totems in Preludes 11. According to community sources, one appears per area per in-game day. That isn't officially confirmed.
- Lampyrites matter once you start working with Tempers. Where to farm them is in the Amber Lampyrite guide.
โญ Weapon Ranks: Why Some Drops Are Already Rank 30
In Soulframe, weapons sit fully built in the world: on weapon racks, in chests and as enemy drops. Usually they drop at rank 0 and you have to level them. There's one exception the game never explains:
- Once you've mastered a weapon to rank 30, every further copy drops at rank 30. It's ready to use right away, no leveling again. Confirmed with the Einstwurzel, which showed up again as a fully ranked drop after mastering it.
- Fragments also exist: if you find a weapon's fragments instead of the finished weapon, Tuvalkane assembles them.
- The stars in the top right say nothing about whether a weapon comes finished or as fragments. The community wiki on wiki.avakot.org lists them as the weapon's tier, for example "2-Star" or "3-Star". Digital Extremes hasn't officially explained them.
๐ก Practical takeaway: it pays to push weapons you like to rank 30. Every future copy then skips the leveling completely, which is a big reason experienced players master as many weapons as possible.
๐จ Craftwork: The Quality of Your Weapon
Every weapon has a Craftwork line in its tooltip that shows its build quality. Two copies of the same weapon can differ here, so don't just look at the name when you pick something up. According to the Preludes 16 patch notes, the tiers are Stock, Military, Officer, Noble, Sovereign and Legendary.
Below that you see the weapon's Tempers, its upgrade slots. Tempers came with Preludes 14.5 "Ode'n Tempers". How many Tempers a weapon can carry depends on the Temper limit of its Craftwork tier, from 0 to 1 on Stock up to 5 to 8 on Legendary. Since Preludes 16, Tuvalkane can transfer Tempers you've learned onto weapons at rank 30. You need the quest The Steelsinger and Tuvalkane at rank 3 for that.
๐บ๏ธ Nightfold, World Trees and Fast Travel
Your Nightfold (your personal sanctuary) is your hub. Tuvalkane and the Ancestors you recruit offer their services there, and that's where you craft gear. Out in the world you pull the spear from World Trees. That clears fog on the map and adds the tree to your Wevetseed fast travel network. Reveal the map actively and you save a lot of walking later. Details in the World Trees guide.
๐ก Priorities for Your First Week
- 1๏ธโฃ Reach Bond 3 with Tuvalkane (unlocks Pact crafting).
- 2๏ธโฃ Finish the quest "The Last Pensive" and win over the Ancestor Orlick.
- 3๏ธโฃ Build up a Gossamer Quartz stockpile.
- 4๏ธโฃ Unlock the second weapon slot in the Nightfold.
- 5๏ธโฃ Finish the Fable "The Torment Stag", but go in prepared. It rewards the Fragment for the Garren Rood Pact.
- 6๏ธโฃ Once you're settled, look into your wolf pup. The wolf companion guide explains how to raise it.
๐ซ Common Beginner Mistakes
- Skipping Tuvalkane or recruiting her too late.
- Ignoring NPC dialogue and leaving permanent bonuses on the table.
- Not matching your Virtues to the weapon's Virtue requirement (which means zero bonus).
- Taking on the Fable "The Torment Stag" completely unprepared.
- Wasting Gossamer Quartz on cosmetics early.
- Using Spectral Sight only for exploring and forgetting Smite in combat.
- Not mastering a favorite weapon to rank 30, then leveling every new copy from rank 0 again.
โ FAQ: Soulframe Beginner Guide
Is Soulframe finished?
No. Soulframe is in the Preludes phase (currently Preludes 16), an early test phase. Controls, values and systems can change with every update, so check your in-game display when in doubt.
Which Virtue should I pick as a beginner?
Go by your favorite weapon: Courage for longblades and heavy weapons, Grace for bows, shortblades and Flyblades, Spirit for magick staves. Since you can reassign points for free, no choice is final.
What do the stars on a weapon mean?
The community wiki on wiki.avakot.org lists them as the weapon's tier; there's no official explanation. What's certain is that they don't decide whether you find a weapon finished or build it from fragments.
Why is my new weapon already rank 30?
Because you've already mastered that weapon to rank 30 once. Every further copy then drops at full rank.
How do I Smite?
Hold Spectral Sight (Q) and press the left mouse button on a valid enemy.
What's the most important first step?
Recruit the blacksmith Tuvalkane as early as possible and craft regularly to reach Bond 3, which unlocks Pact crafting.
๐ Where to Go Next
Once the basics from this Soulframe beginner guide sit, pick your first Pact in the Pacts guide, open up the map with the World Trees and take a break at the water with fishing. All English guides are on the Soulframe hub.
As of October 2026 (Preludes 16 "Of Hook and Hound" from September 18, 2026, with Hotfix 6): checked against official Soulframe sources, the Preludes 16 patch notes and hotfixes, the community-maintained wiki on wiki.avakot.org (including "Gossamer Quartz", "Virtues" and weapon pages), the fan site Soulframe Hub and in-game tooltips. There is no official Soulframe wiki. Since Soulframe is still in the Preludes phase, values and systems change with new updates.
