Planet Crafter Tips: 15 Things I Wish I'd Known Before Starting

Planet Crafter Tips: 15 Things I Wish I'd Known Before Starting

The most important Planet Crafter tips for your start boil down to one sentence: don't build more machines, build better ones, and never place a Vegetube without a seed. If you play your first 20 hours without these Planet Crafter tips, you mostly lose time: on twenty T1 machines, on ore rotting in an output slot and on a backpack full of raw materials that a single crafted part could have replaced.

These 15 points are meant to be checkable, with numbers, unlock thresholds and locations instead of "just explore a lot". The terraforming stages themselves are covered in our terraformation stages guide. This one is about what saves time between the stages.

๐Ÿš€ What changed by 2026, and why old Planet Crafter tips fall short

Many guides on this topic date from 2022 to 2024, and a lot has happened since. Version 1.0 launched on April 10, 2024 with co-op for up to ten players. The Planet Humble DLC followed in October 2024, the moons update with two terraformable moons and equipment transfer between worlds in May 2025, and the Toxicity DLC in November 2025.

The biggest cut was the 2.0 update on April 6, 2026: third-person camera, a jetpack chip for rovers, usable beds, locker storage and a new biome in the west of Prime with higher Osmium and Iridium concentrations. What matters for you: the terraforming thresholds stayed the same. Old numbers still hold. Old control tips and route descriptions often don't.

The Skeo moon was first tested on the development branch from July 2026 (versions 2.100 to 2.102) and went live for everyone as v2.102 "Skeo" on September 1, 2026. Since July 21, 2026 the game has also been available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

๐ŸŒฑ Tips 1 to 4: oxygen is the lever almost everyone wastes

1. Never place a Vegetube without a seed

An empty Vegetube produces practically nothing. The seed you put in decides the output, and the gap between the basic seed and the best one is a factor of six.

Seed / plantOxygen bonus
Lirma Seed (base)100%
Shanga Seed150%
Pestera Seed200%
Nulna Seed300%
Tuska Seed400%
Orema plant450%
Volnus plant500%
Golden Seed600%

2. Golden Crates aren't collectibles, they're oxygen

Every Golden Crate holds a statue plus a Golden Seed with a 600 percent bonus, and loot one step above what blue crates give you at the same point. You can reach two of them in your first hour: one at the foot of the cliff to the left of the default start (261:27:487), one on the cargo ship opposite (292:162:1009).

The total number of Golden Crates is disputed. Different guides list 11, 17 or 27. So that number isn't confirmed, but the two starting locations are.

3. Always build Heater, Drill and Vegetube as a set of three

The Terraformation Index grows from oxygen, heat, pressure and later biomass. If one value races ahead, progress visibly stalls. The most practical rule: whenever you place a Heater, place a Drill and a Vegetube right after it. Why the bar seems to stop for no reason is explained in our terraformation stages guide.

4. Upgrading beats multiplying, every time

Twenty T1 machines cost twenty times the power and space. According to community measurements, a T2 Heater delivers roughly three times what a T1 does. For the Ore Crusher it's documented: T1 takes 130 seconds for 3 resources, T2 (from 25,000 Ti) 90 seconds for 4, T3 (from 1 million Ti) 70 seconds for 5.

โš’๏ธ Tips 5 to 8: machines, ore and the rocket multiplier

5. The Launch Platform is the biggest jump in the whole game

It unlocks at 345 kTi and costs three Super Alloy, three Titanium and three Iron. Booster rockets then give permanent multipliers, and they add up, they don't multiply. Three asteroid rockets give +3000 percent. A T3 Drill normally produces 0.25 heat, 2.5 with one booster rocket and 7.5 with three.

6. Only place Ore Extractors where they find rare ore

Extractors can only go on sand or soil, never on rock. They deliver Iron and Magnesium anywhere, rare ores only in the right biome. T1 unlocks at 155 ยตPa and holds 20 minerals, T2 at 364.5 mPa with 25, T3 only at 38.33 Pa, but it can target one ore type. The map information rocket marks the good spots.

7. Full output slots stop half your production

The Ore Crusher and the Detoxification machine put their results in their own output slot, not in your storage. Once it's full, the machine stops processing, silently and without a warning. That's the most common reason you still have no Aluminum after two hours.

8. Ice runs out, plan the replacement early

Surface ice disappears between the rain and liquid water stages, around 875 kTi. Individual blocks melt at 100 nK, 5 ยตK and 45 ยตK, the last one only at 2 GTi. From then on your water comes from the Atmospheric Water Collector instead of your multitool. If you only react once your stock is empty, you're stuck.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Tips 9 to 12: inventory, recycler and Terra Tokens

9. Build the Recycling machine earlier than you think

The Recycling machine is the only way to get materials back from crafted items: backpacks, jetpacks, circuit boards, fertilizer, explosive powder. It costs two deconstruction microchips and three Super Alloy and draws 12.5 energy per second. Important: anything you placed through the build menu can't be recycled with it, only portable items.

10. Don't scrap crafted parts, they're compressed storage

The Planet Crafter doesn't stack items: ten Iron take ten slots. A crafted part takes one slot but carries the raw materials of many. A Super Alloy Rod is made from 8 Super Alloy plus 1 Aluminum, which works out to 49 raw units in a single slot. Throw those parts away to free space and you throw away many times that amount.

11. Computer chips from wrecks are worth real money

Trading turns goods into Terra Tokens. The best regular items according to the game-data database planetcrafter.th.gl: Fusion Energy Cell 100 tokens, Pulsar Quartz 30, Circuit board 25, Uranium Rod and Fabric 10 each. The loot lying around pays better though: computer chips from procedural wrecks bring 100 to 5,000 tokens, multiplier fuses 2,500 to 6,000. What the fuses do on their own is in our fuses guide.

12. Biomass comes from breeding, not from machines

From the moss stage on, biomass counts toward the index, and it scales with living things. Insects from the larvae and butterfly cycle and aquatic life through phytoplankton are the two loops players most often start too late in the mid game.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Tips 13 to 15: base, moving and co-op

13. Never build your main base in the deepest valley

From 50 MTi permanent lakes form, exactly where the convenient valley floors are today. Building one level higher costs you nothing and saves you a complete move later. Criteria and specific spots are in our guide to the best base locations.

14. Copy your save before switching planets

The interplanetary rocket is consumed at launch, and the game autosaves as soon as you arrive. A packing mistake is final unless you copied your save folder beforehand. According to players you get 20 slots in the rocket plus up to 45 in a fully upgraded backpack, 65 in total. Where you can go is covered in the planets overview, and what each backpack tier needs is in the equipment guide.

15. Co-op yes, crossplay no

Since 1.0, up to ten people can play together in one Planet Crafter world. It doesn't work across platforms though: PS5 and PC players can't find each other, as our crossplay article explains. If you want to play as a pair, sort that out before you buy, not after.

โš ๏ธ The five most expensive beginner mistakes

  • Placing Vegetubes without seeds, which wastes the biggest oxygen lever of the early game
  • Pushing only one terraforming value and wondering why progress stalls
  • Building twenty T1 machines instead of four upgraded ones
  • Not emptying output slots and halting production without noticing
  • Flying to the next planet without a save backup

โ“ Planet Crafter tips FAQ

Which Planet Crafter tip helps most at the start?

Put a seed in every Vegetube and grab the two Golden Crates near the start. A Golden Seed gives a 600 percent bonus instead of the basic seed's 100 percent. That's the biggest single jump you can make in your first hour.

Are more machines or better machines worth it?

Better, almost always. The T3 Ore Crusher delivers 5 resources in 70 seconds, the T1 only 3 in 130 seconds. Higher tiers also save space and cable runs.

Do rocket bonuses stack?

Yes, but additively. Three booster rockets of the same type give +3000 percent, not three times 1000 percent in the multiplicative sense. A T3 Drill goes from 0.25 to 7.5 heat with them.

Are old guides still useful after the 2.0 update?

For numbers yes, for routes only partly. Terraforming thresholds and recipes stayed the same in April 2026, but biomes, controls and interface changed. That's why a lot of Planet Crafter tips from 2023 read oddly today.

What happens when I die?

You lose part of your inventory and respawn at your starting point. There are no enemies. The only dangers are oxygen, hunger, thirst and the occasional meteor.

Do I need the DLCs for these tips?

Mostly no. The Ore Crusher belongs to the Humble DLC and the Detoxification machine to Toxicity, so those parts of tips 4 and 7 only matter there. Everything else applies to the base game on Prime.

As of October 8, 2026, game version v2.102 "Skeo". Checked against Miju Games' update history (2.0 on April 6, 2026, development branch 2.100 to 2.102 in July 2026, v2.102 "Skeo" for all platforms on September 1, 2026), Wikipedia for release and co-op history, the planetcrafter.th.gl item database for item names and several independent community guides.

Community information without official confirmation: the triple output of the T2 Heater, the slot counts of 20 and 45 when switching planets and the token values of the wreck loot. The trade values of regular items come from the data-mined planetcrafter.th.gl database. The total number of Golden Crates is disputed and left open. Values can change with any patch.
