Fallout 76 Fishing: Bait, Weather, Axolotls and Fall Fish

Fallout 76 Fishing: Bait, Weather, Axolotls and Fall Fish

You unlock Fallout 76 fishing with the quest "Casting Off" at Fisherman's Rest in the Mire. After that you can cast your line at any body of water in Appalachia that's deep enough. Which fish bites comes down to three things: bait, region and weather.

This guide covers getting started, the minigame, the three bait types, the weather tricks with the Weather Control Station and what to do with your catch, all the way to legendary items from Linda-Lee. It also covers what changed with the seasonal fall fish since "The Slasher" update.

๐ŸŽฃ Unlocking Fallout 76 fishing: the Casting Off quest

Fishing came to Fallout 76 with the "Gone Fission" update in June 2025. There are two ways in: follow a radio signal to Fisherman's Rest in the Mire, or pick up the quest from a sign outside Vault 76. According to the Nuka Knights community database, Fisherman's Rest sits east of the Valley Galleria.

On site you meet an unusual trio: Captain Raymond Clark, The Fisherman and Linda-Lee, a giant hermit crab. They hand you your first rod and bait so you can finish "Casting Off". After that, fishing is unlocked for good.

Important for new players: the rod isn't an equippable item. You don't put it in a weapon slot or pull it from your inventory. Stand at the water, look at it, and a fishing prompt appears. If you want to show off your rod in your C.A.M.P., you can build a display version at the workbench, according to Nuka Knights.

๐ŸŒŠ How Fallout 76 fishing works

After the cast animation, the bobber floats on the water. When it dips under, a fish has bitten, so press the prompted button. Only then does the actual minigame start.

A circular meter appears in the bottom right. Bethesda describes the task like this: keep the yellow indicator over the fish icon, and the fish is drawn toward the center of the circle. The fish dodges and the indicator turns with it. Lose it for too long and it breaks free. Get it to the center and the catch goes straight into your inventory.

๐Ÿ”ง Upgrading your rod: reels, bobbers and rod styles

For serious Fallout 76 fishing you can upgrade your rod with reels, bobbers and other parts. Rod styles only change the look. According to community sources, the mods affect five stats: Time to Hook, Line Strength, Reel in Speed, Catch Zone and Rotation Speed. You get mods from daily quests and fishing challenges, and rod styles also from the Atomic Shop and Season rewards.

A community tip: an upgraded reel pays off for Axolotls, because rare catches fight much harder in the minigame. With the starter gear you lose them more often just before the center.

๐Ÿชฑ The three bait types and what they attract

Fallout 76 fishing uses three kinds of bait: Common, Improved and Superb. The better the bait, the rarer the possible catch. The breakdown from Bethesda's official guide:

BaitMainly attractsSource
Common Baitgeneric fishbought at Fisherman's Rest, quests
Improved Baitrarer regional fishcontainers across Appalachia, rewards
Superb BaitLocal Legends, Glowing fish, AxolotlsSeason rewards only

With Common Bait you'll regularly pull scrapable junk out of the water too, according to the fallout.wiki community wiki. That's not a bug, it's part of the loot table. Keep an eye on your weight during long sessions. For gear and builds that keep you alive on the way to the water, see our Fallout 76 best builds.

Superb Bait is scarce in Fallout 76. Save it for targeted attempts, like a Local Legend in the rain or Glowing fish in a nuke zone, not for everyday fishing.

๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ Region and weather: where Fallout 76 fishing pays off

Some fish only live in certain regions of Appalachia. Regional fish and Local Legends are tied to an area, while generic fish bite almost everywhere. Weather is the second lever, and this is where it gets interesting:

WeatherFavors
Clear skiesgeneric fish
Rainregional fish, Local Legends, Axolotls
Radstorm or nukeGlowing fish

โ›ˆ๏ธ The Weather Control Station trick

You don't have to wait for the right weather. The "Gone Fission" patch notes make it clear: for Fallout 76 fishing, natural weather counts the same as weather you set with the Weather Control Station in your C.A.M.P. If your C.A.M.P. sits at water in the right region, you can force rain and fish there for Axolotls and Local Legends on purpose.

According to Nuka Knights this also works with a station set to nuke or radstorm weather, which gets you Glowing fish without a real nuke. If you'd rather use a real zone, our guide to Flux in Fallout 76 covers nuke zones.

๐ŸŸ Which fish are in Fallout 76

The fish species in Fallout 76 fishing split into clearly separate groups:

  • Generic fish: available everywhere, ideal for starting out and for Fish Bits.
  • Regional fish: rarer, harder to catch and tied to a region.
  • Local Legends: extremely rare fish in specific waters, the ones you'll be bragging about, as Bethesda puts it.
  • Axolotls: twelve variants. Each month a different Axolotl is active, in exactly two regions.
  • Glowing fish: only during a radstorm or nuke.

According to Nuka Knights, who read the catch tables from the game files, the odds with the right bait and weather are far apart: around 15 percent for a Local Legend, 22 percent for a Glowing fish and 33 percent for the Axolotl of the month. Those are community numbers, not official values.

๐Ÿ‚ Seasonal fall fish since September 22

With "The Slasher" update, Bethesda added seasonal fish and tied Fallout 76 fishing to the seasons. Starting with the autumnal equinox, new fish swim in Appalachia's waters, along with matching seasonal recipes. Captain Raymond has a note with clues to where they can be caught, so a trip to Fisherman's Rest is worth it.

According to Nuka Knights, the fall season of Fallout 76 fishing also brings its own seasonal Local Legend and challenges with a C.A.M.P. title as a reward. What else the update brought is covered in our Season 26 article.

โš”๏ธ Kingfisher: fishing makes a weapon stronger

A detail most fishing guides skip: among the reworked unique weapons in "The Slasher" is Kingfisher, with the effect "+10% Damage per Local Legend Challenge Completed". Every Local Legend challenge you finish makes this weapon permanently stronger. All other uniques are in our Fallout 76 unique weapons list.

๐Ÿณ What to do with your catch

You can eat fish straight from your Pip-Boy inventory or turn it into Fish Bits at a Cooking Station. Fish Bits go into more fish dishes. Per the community wiki, fish restore health over time and fill hunger.

The more interesting route leads to Linda-Lee. Feed her Fish Bits and she gives you a random legendary item. According to community sources she needs 25 Fish Bits per reward and hands out weapons or armor with one to three stars. Generic fish with Common Bait are all you need for that, a good reason not to just sell your haul.

๐Ÿ“… Daily quest: fishing for Captain Raymond Clark

Captain Clark hands out a daily Fallout 76 fishing quest. According to Nuka Knights you have to catch seven fish in designated areas. Rewards include bait, plans for C.A.M.P. items such as the curved fish display and, with some luck, rod mods. You also get Improved Bait from Public Events.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips for efficient Fallout 76 fishing

  • Common Bait for Fish Bits: quantity over quality, since Linda-Lee doesn't care about rarity.
  • Rain is the main key: Local Legends and Axolotls need rain, and a C.A.M.P. at the water with a Weather Control Station saves hours.
  • Watch the monthly rotation: the Axolotl changes monthly. With twelve variants, the same one only comes back after a year, as long as Bethesda keeps the rotation.
  • Ration Superb Bait: only use it with the right weather in the right region.
  • Don't give away legendary loot: whatever Linda-Lee hands you, you can keep, sell or scrap.
