Dune Awakening Main Quest: All 5 Acts of Book 1 and How to Tell Where You Are

The Dune Awakening main quest is fully playable for the first time: Update 1.5, live on all platforms since September 17, 2026, delivered the fifth and final act of Book 1. Whether you stopped in summer 2025 or just started on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, this overview gives you the thread without heavy spoilers, and helps you figure out where you are when the story seems to stall.

It shows which act came with which update, where the story takes place, which journeys make up the main storyline and what to check if the finale doesn't complete. Twists are only hinted at, and we flag that clearly beforehand.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Why Chapters and Acts Are Not the Same Thing

The most common mix-up: many overviews treat "Chapter 2" as "Act 2". That's wrong. Funcom spelled out the mapping in its console announcement, and it's irregular. Dune: Awakening launched with Acts 1 and 2. Chapter 2 contained Act 3 and part of Act 4. Chapter 3 then completed Act 4.

So Act 4 stretches across two free updates almost five months apart. If you came back in February 2026 and thought you had missed an act, you simply played the second half of the same act.

๐Ÿงญ Main Quest Journeys in Order

In your journal, the main quest shows up as named storylines, not as act numbers. According to the community wiki awakening.wiki, the main storyline runs through these journeys:

Community walkthroughs file The Great Convention Part I under Act 3 and Part II under Act 4. The wiki doesn't list the Act 5 journeys yet, so we don't name them here. If one journey seems to have no next step, check whether a different storyline on this list is still open in your journal.

๐Ÿ“ Acts 1 and 2: Arrival on Arrakis

The starting point is an alternate timeline. Funcom asks on its official site: what if Paul Atreides had never been born? Without him, the conflict between House Atreides and the Harkonnens plays out differently, and the Fremen have vanished without a trace.

The main story follows that mystery. According to Funcom you're meant to get to the bottom of the mysterious disappearance of the Fremen and uncover the truth about your own past along the way.

Gameplay-wise, the first two acts are the learning phase. You get stranded in the Hagga Basin, build a Stillsuit, learn that water and vehicles decide everything, and draw the attention of Shai-Hulud the moment you stand on open sand too long. The political layer starts in parallel: you join House Atreides or the Harkonnens and climb their ranks. Which side to pick is covered in our faction guide.

If you're starting fresh, knowing the typical early mistakes saves a lot of frustration. We collected the ten most common ones in our beginner tips.

Story-wise, Acts 1 and 2 introduce the power triangle of Great Houses, Guild and Imperium. The Deep Desert only opens up later as an endgame zone, and for the main story it's backdrop at first, not mandatory. If you only want to follow the plot, you can largely skip it during the first two acts.

The end of Chapter 1 brings what Funcom later called the ominous revelations at the end of Chapter 1. We won't say more. That cliffhanger is the hook for everything that follows.

๐Ÿ” Act 3: Arrakeen, Harko Village and a String of Murders

Chapter 2 launched in September 2025 and opened two cities as social hubs: Arrakeen and Harko Village. Both are more than scenery. They're sources of contracts, vendors and characters who give you background.

Light framing spoilers from here on. Specific twists stay out.

Act 3 is the investigation act. You look into brutal murders, dig into the past and, in Funcom's words, untangle a web of intrigue that reaches into the darkest corners of the Imperium. The tone shifts noticeably: less desert survival, more interrogations, favors and faction politics. This is where it first becomes clear that your origins are no accident.

The paid DLC "The Lost Harvest" released alongside it. Important for context: it's a standalone side story around a crashed carryall and not part of the main story. If you only want to follow the Dune Awakening main quest, you miss no act without the DLC.

โš”๏ธ Act 4: The Dueling Ring of Neo-Carthag

Act 4 started in Chapter 2 and was only completed with Chapter 3 on February 3, 2026. The setting is Neo-Carthag: according to Funcom you fight your way through the dueling ring of Neo-Carthag and team up with an unexpected ally to dig deeper into the mystery of your origins.

Chapter 3 was also the biggest update the game had seen until then. It added ten new locations on the overland map, five repeatable Testing Stations and five challenge locations, a reworked Deep Desert layout and the specialization and augmentation systems. The Landsraad got new, repeatable missions too.

For returning players that means: a save from before February 2026 meets clearly changed systems. How augmentations work is explained in the augmentations guide, and the political endgame layer in the Landsraad guide.

๐Ÿ”ง Act 5: The Finale With Update 1.5

Update 1.5 brought the fifth act and has been live since September 17, 2026. In its console announcement Funcom had still named September 22 for the final act that closes Book 1 with a dramatic ending. In the end, Update 1.5 went live five days earlier.

With Update 1.5, the full story of Book 1 is playable across all five acts in one go, in single-player, on private servers or on multiplayer servers.

We deliberately say nothing about the plot of Act 5 here. Funcom kept story content out of the Public Test Client. The 1.5.1.0 test notes only described systems like single-player mode, gamepad support and the reworked interface.

For returning players, Update 1.5 is worth it beyond the act itself. Funcom lists, among other things, vehicle recovery, base reconstruction and scalable difficulty settings for private servers. The 1.5 announcement also sums up the Landsraad with its own missions, but that rebuild already came with Chapter 3. Since 1.5, progression is tied more to your character than to the server.

The regular console launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S followed on September 22, 2026. Deluxe and Ultimate Edition pre-orders had already been playing via the Head Start since September 17.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Stuck in the Main Quest? Check These First

  • Finale ended without its last scene: Hotfix 1.5.3.1 (September 19, 2026) fixed the final dialogue and final cutscene of Book 1 not playing for some players. If you finished before that date and the ending was missing, log back in on the current build (Hotfix 1.5.3.7, October 9, 2026) and check whether the sequence plays.
  • Step after refueling the sandbike won't complete: the same hotfix fixed a quest step that didn't register after refueling the sandbike. How refueling works is in the sandbike guide.
  • No next step in sight: compare the journey in your journal with the table above. The main quest jumps between storylines, so the next step may sit under a different storyline name.
  • Story vs. side content: faction journeys, the Landsraad and the paid DLCs don't advance the acts. Only the main storylines do.

๐Ÿ’ก Where You Are in the Dune Awakening Main Quest

You can tell your progress by the last location you finished, not by the update number:

  • You've never been to Arrakeen or Harko Village: you're still in Act 1 or 2.
  • You investigated in Arrakeen but never saw Neo-Carthag: you're in Act 3 or at the start of Act 4.
  • You know the dueling ring of Neo-Carthag: you're in the middle of Act 4 or done with it.
  • Act 4 is complete: continue straight into Act 5 with Update 1.5.

A tip for returning players: since single-player mode arrived, Acts 1 to 4 can be played fully solo, without server pressure and without Deep Desert wipes. How to tune that mode is in the single-player settings guide.

โ“ FAQ: Dune Awakening Main Quest

How many acts does Book 1 have?

Five. Acts 1 and 2 came at launch, Act 3 and the start of Act 4 with Chapter 2, the conclusion of Act 4 with Chapter 3, and Act 5 with Update 1.5.

Do I need the paid DLCs to follow the story?

No. "The Lost Harvest" and the other paid DLC are standalone extra content. The acts themselves came in the free chapter updates.

Can I play the main quest solo?

Yes. Update 1.5 added a single-player mode on all platforms where the whole story runs at your own pace. PvP is not a factor there.

Why won't the Book 1 ending play?

Hotfix 1.5.3.1 fixed the final dialogue and cutscene not triggering for some players. Make sure you're on the current build and check again.

What happens in Act 5?

We deliberately don't say in this low-spoiler overview. Funcom kept story content out of the public test builds. What's certain is that the act closes Book 1.

Do console players have to start at Act 1?

Yes, and that's the normal case. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S everyone starts fresh and plays all five acts in order.

Does the story continue after Book 1?

Funcom explicitly says "Book 1", which suggests a follow-up. Funcom had not announced one by October 11, 2026. In Communinet Signal #21 from October 1, 2026, Funcom only names the "Polar Cap" as its next focus, with no details or date.

As of October 11, 2026 (Update 1.5, current Hotfix 1.5.3.7 from October 9, 2026): checked against Funcom's official announcements on duneawakening.com for Chapter 2, Chapter 3 and the console launch, the patch notes for the Public Test Client 1.5.1.0, Update 1.5 (version 1.5.3.0) and Hotfix 1.5.3.1, and the official game description. The answer on a follow-up to Book 1 was checked against the duneawakening.com news up to October 11, 2026.

Journey names come from the community wiki awakening.wiki, the act mapping of The Great Convention from community walkthroughs. The base game's June 2025 launch date and some update dates also come from the gaming press. Funcom's announcements take precedence.
