Conan Exiles Gruel: Recipe, Variants and the Wheel of Pain

Conan Exiles Gruel is the most important food in the game that you never want to eat yourself, yet nothing works without it. This thin, watery mush of plant fiber and seeds is the standard feed for your thralls on the Wheel of Pain and the foundation of every thrall operation. This guide covers the correct recipe, the upgraded variants, how to mass-produce Gruel and why you should throw spoiled Gruel away.

Quick answer: you make Gruel from 5 Plant Fiber + 1 Seeds at a Campfire. According to community guides, one batch gives 10 Gruel (another source says a single portion). It stays fresh for about 1 hour 20 minutes.

The recipe: how to make Gruel

The base recipe couldn't be simpler. You need two ingredients and a fire:

IngredientAmountSource
Plant Fiber5Harvest bushes (by hand or with a sickle)
Seeds1Harvest bushes (drops along the way)

Result: 10 portions per batch according to community guides. Cooking only takes a few seconds.

Station: the Enhanced database lists the Campfire. Don't forget to add fuel such as wood, branches or coal, or nothing happens.

Unlock: sources disagree here. One community guide says level 15, GamerGuides says you can cook it as soon as you have a campfire. You need it at the latest once your Wheel of Pain is up.

As of 2026: the recipe is unchanged after the Enhanced/UE5 update, still 5 Plant Fiber + 1 Seeds.

What do you need Conan Exiles Gruel for?

1. The Wheel of Pain: breaking thralls

The main use: you put Gruel into the Wheel of Pain as fuel. Your captured NPC turns the wheel until their will is broken and they become one of your thralls. Without food in the wheel, the process stops.

According to the Conan Exiles wiki, a named T4 thrall takes 1 hour on the wheel without a Taskmaster and 24 minutes with a named Taskmaster. Which wheel you use makes no difference.

2. Emergency food for you

You can eat Gruel yourself, but it isn't good food. It restores only 9 food and 4 water, plus weak healing of 1 HP per second. Fine in an emergency, but grab cooked meat or better dishes instead.

3. An ingredient for better dishes

Gruel is the base for upgraded recipes (see below). As a raw material for better food, it is surprisingly useful.

Every Gruel variant compared

Recipes for the variants come from the Enhanced database; the healing values of the upgraded variants are community figures and not officially confirmed.

VariantRecipeStationHealing/secNotes
Gruel (base)5 Plant Fiber + 1 SeedsCampfire1 HP/sCheapest option, ideal for the wheel
Flavored Gruel1 Gruel + 1 Dried Berries + 2 SpiceStove2 HP/sFills more hunger
Enhanced Gruel1 Gruel + 1 Egg + 1 SpiceStove3 HP/sBest healing for the cost

Important: the upgraded variants are only worth it for you as a player. For thralls on the Wheel of Pain, the cheap base version is more than enough. Don't waste eggs and spices on thralls.

How long the Wheel of Pain takes

According to the Conan Exiles wiki, the time depends only on the thrall's tier and on the Taskmaster at the wheel. The wiki says explicitly that neither the type of wheel nor the type of food changes the time. The Lesser Wheel of Pain, the Wheel of Pain and the Greater Wheel of Pain all break thralls equally fast:

Thrall tierWithout TaskmasterWith named Taskmaster (T4)
T115 min (900 s)6 min (360 s)
T230 min (1,800 s)12 min (720 s)
T345 min (2,700 s)18 min (1,080 s)
T4 (named)60 min (3,600 s)24 min (1,440 s)

According to the wiki, a T3 Taskmaster makes the wheel 75 percent faster and a named one 150 percent faster. So catch a Taskmaster first, before you break T4 thralls. How much food the wheel uses per hour isn't stated in the wiki, so put in a full stack of Gruel rather than cooking more in the middle of a break. Which thralls are worth the effort is covered in our list of the best thralls.

Mass production: how to make Gruel efficiently

Tip 1, use a sickle: an iron or steel sickle harvests a lot more Plant Fiber per bush than your bare hands. That gets you enough material for hundreds of portions in five minutes.

Tip 2, burn coal: coal burns longer than wood and keeps your fire going while you gather more ingredients. That way production keeps running without you adding fuel every 30 seconds.

Tip 3, several fires: build three to five campfires side by side and split the ingredients. Each fire cooks in parallel, which multiplies your output.

Tip 4, AFK production: load a campfire with as much Plant Fiber, Seeds and coal as it holds, switch it on and go exploring. When you come back, hundreds of portions are ready. Use them quickly, since Gruel spoils after about 80 minutes.

Spoiled Gruel: better throw it out

According to GamerGuides, Gruel lasts about 1 hour 20 minutes, then it spoils.

If it spoils in your inventory or in the Wheel of Pain, it turns into Spoiled Gruel. We couldn't confirm in any reliable source what eating the spoiled version does exactly. When in doubt, don't eat it.

Fix: throw spoiled Gruel away right away. In the Wheel of Pain, thralls don't eat spoiled food and the process simply stops. Cook fresh portions regularly instead of hoarding huge amounts that go bad.

Gruel vs. other food at the Wheel of Pain

Technically any cooked food can fuel the Wheel of Pain, not just Gruel. But does that make sense? Here is the comparison:

FoodCost to makeEffect at the wheelRecommendation
Gruel5 Plant Fiber + 1 Seedssame break timeBest choice, cheapest to make
Cooked meatNeeds hunting and cookingsame break timeWasteful, eat it yourself
EggsLimited locationssame break timeBetter saved for Enhanced Gruel
Insects and grubsGathered on the sidesame break timeBetter used as fish bait

According to the Conan Exiles wiki, the type of food doesn't change the break time; the difference is the cost. And there Gruel wins by a mile: Plant Fiber and Seeds are everywhere. Save your meat, eggs and grubs for more important recipes. If you are still building up your workforce, our overview of thrall professions shows which workbench needs which thrall.

Bottom line

Gruel is the least glamorous but most important recipe in Conan Exiles. No Gruel, no thralls; no thralls, no efficient workbenches; no workbenches, no progress. The recipe is simple (5 Plant Fiber + 1 Seeds), and production is cheap and scales well. Use the base version for the Wheel of Pain and the upgraded variants as cheap healing food for yourself. And never eat the spoiled version.

FAQ about Conan Exiles Gruel

How do you make Gruel in Conan Exiles?
The recipe is 5 Plant Fiber + 1 Seeds at a Campfire. According to community guides, one batch gives 10 portions and only takes a few seconds.

How much Gruel does the Wheel of Pain need?
We found no documented consumption rate, and the Conan Exiles wiki doesn't give one. What is documented is the time: a named T4 thrall takes 1 hour without a Taskmaster and 24 minutes with a named Taskmaster, whatever wheel you use. So a Taskmaster also cuts the time the wheel needs food.

Can you eat Gruel yourself?
Yes, but it is weak: only 9 food and 4 water plus 1 HP per second of healing. Fine as emergency food, otherwise cooked meat is better. It stays fresh for about 1 hour 20 minutes. Better not eat Spoiled Gruel, since its exact effect isn't documented.

Which Gruel variant is best?
For you as a player, one of the upgraded variants: according to GamerGuides, Enhanced Gruel (with egg and spice) and Flavored Gruel (with dried berries and spice) heal better than the base. For thralls on the wheel, the cheap base version is all you need, so don't waste eggs or spices on them.

Checked against Conan Exiles Enhanced with Hotfix 3.0.1 as of October 2026. Recipes and stations for Gruel, Flavored Gruel and Enhanced Gruel match the Enhanced database conanexiles.gaming.tools. Break times and Taskmaster bonuses come from the player-written Conan Exiles wiki on Fandom (page "Thrall"), which gives no food consumption rate for the wheel. Shelf life (about 1 hour 20 minutes), food values and healing values come from GamerGuides and Ginx.
