Conan Exiles Brimstone is easiest to farm in the caves Gallaman's Tomb and Sinner's Refuge in the south, and later in the Shattered Springs for bulk amounts (with a mask against the toxic fumes). You harvest it with a pickaxe and need it for Steelfire, Star Metal Bars and Dragonpowder.
It is the resource nothing in Conan Exiles works without from the mid game on. Without it, no Steelfire. No Steelfire, no steel. No steel, no decent weapons, tools or armor. And in the endgame you need it again for Star Metal Bars and Dragonpowder. This guide shows where to find Conan Exiles Brimstone, how to farm it efficiently and how much you really need for your projects.
๐ฅ What do I need Brimstone for in Conan Exiles?
It sits in almost every important crafting chain. These are the big ones, with recipes from the Enhanced item database conanexiles.gaming.tools:
Steelfire is the most common use and your first contact with the material. The recipe: 1 Tar + 1 Brimstone in the Firebowl Cauldron. Steelfire is the key ingredient for Steel Bars (3 Iron Bars + 1 Steelfire in the Furnace) and therefore the starting point of your whole steel production. Tar comes for free as a byproduct when you tan hides, as explained in our Thick Leather guide.
Star Metal Bars need Brimstone directly: 2 Star Metal Ore + 1 Brimstone + 1 Black Ice in the Furnace. If you process Star Metal, you need a double supply, for steel and for the bars themselves.
Dragonpowder is the base explosive for PvP and raids. The recipe: 75 Steelfire + 50 Crystal + 10 Brimstone + 2 Demon Blood in the Firebowl Cauldron. That's 10 units directly plus 75 more through the Steelfire. Older guides still list 100 Steelfire; the current database says 75. An Explosive Jar takes 1 Dragonpowder plus an Earthenware Jug and 5 Tar according to the Enhanced database, so that's 85 Brimstone per jar. Older databases such as GamerGuides still list 5 Dragonpowder per jar.
Transportory Stone: igniting a clan stone for sorcery fast travel costs 50 Brimstone and 3 Sacrificial Blood in a flask. How to get there is in our sorcery guide.
Other uses: the database lists it in Firewater, Fire Bolts, the Exploding Trap, several dyes and Golem upgrades, among others. But Steelfire, Star Metal and Dragonpowder are the big consumers.
๐บ๏ธ All Brimstone locations on the map
You mine it in the world, where it shows up as bright yellow crystal chunks that you harvest with a pickaxe. The Enhanced database also lists ways to craft it, for example a sorcery transmutation (500 Stone + 1 Diluted Sorcerous Lifeblood in the Firebowl Cauldron), but for normal needs mining is the way. Some NPCs and bosses also drop it, but nodes are the reliable source. The better the pickaxe, the more you get per node. A Star Metal Pickaxe yields a lot more than an iron one.
1. Gallaman's Tomb (H4): best spot for beginners
This cave lies in the southern desert, west of Cannibal's Rest and east of The Sentinels. The entrance is a big cave mouth that's hard to miss. Inside are two caverns full of nodes guarded by crocodiles. A giant crocodile waits in the last cavern. As a low-level player you can collect everything before it and simply ignore the boss.
Yield: about 150 to 250 Brimstone per run (depending on pickaxe and harvest multiplier settings).
Advantage: close to the starting area along the southern river, no special gear needed.
2. Sinner's Refuge (G4): right next door
Just a short walk from Gallaman's Tomb lies Sinner's Refuge, another cave with several nodes. Hostile NPCs guard the entrance here too, but they're manageable. Combine both caves into one farming route (see below).
Yield: about 100 to 180 Brimstone per run.
3. Executioner's Entrance: alternative cave
A third cave with deposits, also in the desert region. Less productive than the first two, but useful if you're nearby.
4. Shattered Springs (D/E-6): the biggest deposit in the game
The jackpot for farming. The Shattered Springs are a wide area in the western desert, covered in huge yellow sulfur columns that give it in bulk. One run here gets you more than all the caves combined.
But watch out: the whole area is filled with toxic fumes. Without protection you get a stacking debuff that kills you fast. You need a Sandstorm Mask, a Setite mask or another helmet with sandstorm protection to farm here.
The catch-22: according to community guides, the mask needs steel, and steel needs this resource. So you first farm enough in the caves (Gallaman's Tomb, Sinner's Refuge) for your first Steel Bars and the mask before the Shattered Springs open up for you.
Yield: 500 to 1,000+ Brimstone per run. Brimstone and crystal rocknoses also spawn here and drop even more of it or Crystal when harvested.
5. Underwater deposits (eastern jungle / Buccaneer Bay)
In the east of the map, around Buccaneer Bay and the sunken city, there are deposits underwater. They look like bubbling, glowing vents on the sea floor. A quiet alternative if your base is in the jungle, but less productive than the Shattered Springs.
6. Harvesting rocknoses
Brimstone rocknoses drop it when you harvest them with a pickaxe. They spawn in rocky and mountainous areas, especially around the Shattered Springs. More of a bonus on the way than a reliable farming method.
๐งญ The best farming route: 300+ Brimstone in 15 minutes
This route combines the two best beginner caves and works from around level 30 with iron gear.
Step 1: Start at the obelisk near The Sentinels or walk northwest from the southern river.
Step 2: Enter Gallaman's Tomb (H4). Fight through the crocodiles in the first cavern and mine every node. In the second cavern, ignore the giant crocodile and farm the nodes along the walls. Time: about 5 to 7 minutes.
Step 3: Leave the cave and walk west to Sinner's Refuge (G4), about 2 minutes on foot. Fight through the NPCs at the entrance and farm every node inside. Time: about 4 to 5 minutes.
Step 4: Head back to base and turn your haul into Steelfire right away before your next run.
Result: 300 to 450 units in about 15 minutes, depending on pickaxe quality. Nodes respawn after about 15 minutes, so you can loop the route.
Advanced route (with mask): once you have the Sandstorm Mask, switch to the Shattered Springs. You'll get 500 to 1,000 per run in similar time, but you need better gear and a quick way to get there (the obelisk near Klael's Stronghold).
๐ Brimstone calculator: how much you really need
Most guides only tell you where to find it, not how much your goals cost. These numbers are calculated from the current recipes. They assume one craft makes one item; the database doesn't state the output count for Dragonpowder.
| Project | Brimstone | Breakdown |
|---|---|---|
| 1x Steelfire | 1 | 1 Tar + 1 Brimstone |
| 1x Steel Bar | 1 | 3 Iron Bars + 1 Steelfire |
| 100x Steel Bar | 100 | For weapons, armor, building pieces |
| 1x Star Metal Bar | 1 | 2 Star Metal Ore + 1 Brimstone + 1 Black Ice |
| 1x Dragonpowder | 85 | 75 Steelfire (= 75) + 10 directly |
| 1x Explosive Jar | 85 | 1 Dragonpowder (= 85), plus an Earthenware Jug and 5 Tar |
| 10x Explosive Jar (raid prep) | 850 | The reason PvP players farm nonstop |
| Full steel armor set | 30 to 50 | Depending on armor type and mods |
| Steel building materials for a mid-size base | 200 to 500 | Reinforced walls, doors, frames |
A PvE player moving up to steel and Star Metal needs 200 to 500 Brimstone in total. A PvP player crafting Explosive Jars for raids burns 850 Brimstone on just ten jars. That's why the Shattered Springs are one of the most contested places on the map on PvP servers.
โ๏ธ The Brimstone crafting chain: how it all connects
It starts several production chains that interlock:
Chain 1, steel:
Brimstone + Tar โ Steelfire โ Steelfire + 3 Iron Bars โ Steel Bar โ steel weapons, armor and building pieces
Chain 2, Star Metal:
Brimstone + Black Ice + Star Metal Ore โ Star Metal Bar โ endgame weapons and tools
Chain 3, explosives (PvP):
Brimstone โ Steelfire โ Steelfire + Crystal + Brimstone + Demon Blood โ Dragonpowder โ Explosive Jar and other explosives
Chain 4, Hardened Leather (indirect):
Hardened Leather needs Alchemical Base. That doesn't use it directly, but you need steel tools to farm those materials efficiently, and steel needs Brimstone.
๐ก Tips for maximum Brimstone yield
Always a pickaxe, never an axe: the nodes only respond to pickaxes. With an axe you get stone instead. The better the pickaxe, the more you get per node.
Tool upgrades pay off: the gap between an iron pickaxe and a Star Metal Pickaxe is huge. Upgrade as soon as you can and you'll save a lot of farming time.
Make Tar on the side: while you farm, let your Tannery at home process hides. Tar drops as a byproduct of tanning, so you always have enough for Steelfire when you return.
Craft Steelfire right away: don't store the raw material. Turn it into Steelfire in the Firebowl Cauldron immediately so you can see at a glance how many Steel Bars you can make.
Thralls and stations: an Alchemist works the Firebowl Cauldron, a Smelter the Furnace. Since Funcom's crafting overhaul, crafting speed and material savings come from the station type, not from the thrall's tier. Details are in our thrall professions guide.
โ Frequently asked questions about Conan Exiles Brimstone
Where's the best place to farm Brimstone as a beginner?
The caves Gallaman's Tomb (H4) and Sinner's Refuge (G4) in the south. They're close together and need no special gear.
How do I get into the Shattered Springs without dying?
You need a Sandstorm Mask against the toxic fumes. Farm enough in the caves first for the mask and your first Steel Bars.
What do I mine Brimstone with?
Always a pickaxe, never an axe. The better the pickaxe, the more you get per node.
What uses the most Brimstone?
Steelfire (and therefore steel), Star Metal Bars and, especially in PvP, Dragonpowder for Explosive Jars. Ten jars already cost 850 Brimstone.
๐ฏ The path to unlimited Brimstone
Level 20 to 35: alternate between Gallaman's Tomb and Sinner's Refuge with an iron pickaxe and light armor. Goal: enough for your first Steel Bars and the Sandstorm Mask.
Level 35 to 50: switch to the Shattered Springs once you have the mask. Use the obelisk near Klael's Stronghold for quick access and build a stock of 500+ for steel gear and building pieces.
Level 50 to 60+: keep production running for Star Metal Bars. PvP players should count on 85 Brimstone per Explosive Jar and plan for that. Which weapons the steel and Star Metal end up in is covered in our best weapons tier list.
As of October 11, 2026 (Conan Exiles Enhanced, hotfix 3.0.1 from October 8, 2026). Recipes for Steelfire, Steel Bar, Star Metal Bar, Dragonpowder, the Explosive Jar and the Transportory Stone were checked against the Enhanced item database conanexiles.gaming.tools. Locations, yields per run, the 15-minute node respawn and the steel requirement of the Sandstorm Mask come from community guides and weren't confirmed against official data.
