With Preludes 15 "Gods and Ghosts", Soulframe completely rebuilt its Totems. One thing first, because many guides mix them up: Soulframe talismans and Totems are two different systems. Talismans are accessories you wear around your neck for Virtue or combat stats, while Totems go into your weapon's slots and power up Runes and Smites.
This guide covers both, shows how the Triune Talisman gets you a worthwhile first talisman and explains the controversy around the old Totems.
๐ชฌ What changed with Preludes 15?
With Preludes 15 "Gods and Ghosts", Digital Extremes rebuilt the Totem system. At its core, Totems became weapon enchantments built around Runes and Smites. Talismans weren't affected. According to the Avakot community wiki, they've been their own Accessories category since Thawtide in the Preludes 12 cycle. Before that they counted as armor.
Per the patch notes, Totems were reworked to focus more on Runes and Smites. They work passively on a Rune or trigger when a Rune or Smite fires, with effects such as healing, damage boosts and extra explosions (paraphrased from the official notes, as quoted by MMORPG.com). Preludes 16 brought further changes, covered further down.
Soulframe talismans are also part of the new trading system. Players can swap them with each other alongside crafted weapons, armor, Joineries, Runes and Totems, as long as they aren't unique items.
๐ฟ How Totems differ from Soulframe talismans
Totems are tied to the game's three Virtues: Courage, Spirit and Grace. More on those in the Soulframe Virtues guide.
Each Totem gets a random Virtue when you find it, shown by the color of the animal: red for Courage, green for Spirit, blue for Grace. Every weapon's Totem slots are also attuned to one Virtue each. When a Totem sits in a matching slot, its effect scales by 1.9% per point in that Virtue plus 0.05% per point in each other Virtue, according to the Avakot community wiki. At 30 points in the matching Virtue that's roughly +57%.
That creates a real build decision: specialize in one Virtue and make one Totem as strong as possible, or spread your points and get medium strength on several effects at once.
According to the Avakot community wiki, every Totem works in one of four ways:
- Passively on Runes: permanently changes your Rune
- When you cast a Rune
- On a Pull Smite
- On a Smite proc
The wiki lists typical effects too: damage or healing after a Pull Smite, an explosion where the Smite lands, or simply more Rune damage. Some rare Totems also carry a Combat Art. They only fit weapons of that Combat Art, but they're stronger than the universal version.
Which individual Totems perform best shifts with every hotfix. For a current ranking, the ongoing community guides are a better bet than any fixed list.
According to the Avakot community wiki, each weapon has three Totem slots, and a fourth opens once a Rune sits on the weapon. Its Virtue depends on the Rune (more in the Soulframe Runes guide). You can use the same Totem on your main weapon and your sidearm, but not twice on one weapon.
Up to 1,000 Totems fit in your inventory. New Totems come from charming animals with the Fipple Flute or freeing them from Sinecure cages. The official patch notes don't describe this setup in detail.
๐ฟ Soulframe talismans: accessories with fixed stats
You wear talismans as an amulet around your neck and equip them in the Arsenal in the Nightfold. According to the Avakot community wiki they give Virtue points, Attack or Stagger, or defense against Physical, Magick and Stability, and some give several of these. Unlike weapons and Pacts they can't be leveled, and there's no inventory limit for them. Examples are the Cogah talismans (The Cogah Grod, The Cogah Lorcaan, The Cogah Creutair) and the Triune Talisman further down.
๐ Controversy: what happened to the old Totems?
The rework didn't land without friction. Shortly after release, players on the official feedback forum opened the thread "Totem Rework = Removal of all our farmed totems". The title sums up the complaint: Totem collections farmed in earlier Preludes phases were removed with the update, because the old system no longer exists.
As compensation, the fan sites soulframeguide.com and orbisnull.com say all old Totems were automatically converted into the currency Harmonies, which you use to upgrade Totems and Runes in the new system. We haven't found an official confirmation of that conversion. Either way, old Totem progress was effectively reset to zero, a point reviews of the Preludes 15 update picked up too.
Before releasing old Totems from your inventory, check twice whether they've already been converted, so you don't throw anything away by hand.
๐ New in Preludes 16: Totems only work in your main hand
With Preludes 16 "Of Hook and Hound" on September 18, 2026, Digital Extremes adjusted things again. The biggest change: Totems now only activate while in your main hand. On top of that come targeted tweaks:
- Damage Totems have a smaller radius.
- Splatting Sploot is weaker.
- Smiting Stag triggers Smite less often.
- Turn Tusk confuses enemies for longer.
- Conditional armor Totems last longer.
- A bug with Dewclawer is fixed.
For your build, that means your most important Totems belong on your main-hand weapon. If you built around damage Totems or Smiting Stag, recheck the values in game. You still find new Totems out in the world. Per the patch notes, Ode'n camps contain either a chest or a Totem cage, but neither is guaranteed. Everything else from the update is in our Preludes 16 overview.
Digital Extremes also sent the Preludes Honour Talisman with Preludes 16 to every Envoy who joined since the last reset. According to the community wiki it gives +1 to every Virtue.
Hotfix 5 for Preludes 16 (October 8, 2026) mostly touches how you handle Totems: Totems and Runes now show their rank with a frame, Shift-click is disabled for bulk releasing, the Compendium for Totems is disabled, and the Sproutspring Totem shares Smites with the nearest party member again.
๐ก Triune Talisman: one of the best first Soulframe talismans
A concrete example is the Triune Talisman. It's considered a solid first pick for the talisman slot because it boosts all three Virtues at once instead of just one.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Effect | +3 Courage, +3 Spirit, +3 Grace (per the Avakot community wiki) |
| Category | Talisman (accessory, neck slot) |
| Quest | Festival of the Circade |
| Pendants from | Crypt of the Circade |
| Crafted at | Tuvalkane |
| Recipe | Dawn, Dusk and Midnight Pendant, 2,500 Dracs, 1 day (per Avakot) |
Here's how you get it, per the Avakot community wiki:
- In the Crypt of the Circade you solve the Pendant Puzzle in three sections. That earns you the Dusk Pendant, the Dawn Pendant and the Midnight Pendant.
- Wearing one Pendant at a time, you defeat the matching apparition of The Circade in the overworld (Midrath). That's three fights, one per Pendant.
- Then you craft the Triune Talisman at Tuvalkane.
The effort pays off mostly for newer players. Instead of locking into one Virtue early, the Triune Talisman gives you a small, even boost to all three, which works well while your final Virtue spread isn't settled yet.
โจ Practical tips for Soulframe talismans and Totems
- Don't lock in Totems too early: their bonus depends on your Virtue points, so it's worth reslotting whenever you change your Virtue spread.
- Collect Chordstone materials and talisman materials on the same runs. A lot of it overlaps in the same areas.
- New to the game? The Soulframe beginner guide covers combat, Pacts and your first steps before you start fine-tuning accessories.
- Since the meta for individual Totem effects shifts with every hotfix, check the current patch notes on soulframe.com before any big farming session.
