- ❓ FAQ: Soulframe Wolf Pup Training
Soulframe wolf pup training works differently since Preludes 16 Hotfix 4: your pup still earns training progress from fights, travel, fetch, chests and petting, but you now allocate the finished points yourself. There are 15 points in total and a cap of 5 per stat, so you can max out three stats at most.
This guide covers every rule from the official Preludes 16 “Of Hook & Hound” patch notes and Hotfixes 1 to 5: choosing your pup, the five stats and their auras, energy, treats, the bond, the new digging from Hotfix 5, and which spread suits which playstyle.
🐺 Requirement: How You Get Your Wolf Pup
Training has been in the game since Preludes 16, live since September 18, 2026. The requirement is the Fable “The Shewolf Snared”. How to finish that quest and what Orengall and her Pact are about is covered in our Soulframe wolf companion guide.
At the end of the quest you pick one of three pups: Ciar, Cathal or Cuan. This choice is permanent. The patch notes put it plainly: “once your Pup is chosen, it's the one you'll have”. When it isn't with you, the pup sleeps in your Nightfold. You summon it through the Gear Wheel, and since Hotfix 3 the same slot also sends it home again.
🐾 Temperament: What Your Choice Still Changes
Each pup comes with a temperament and three starting points:
| Pup | Temperament | Starting points |
|---|---|---|
| Ciar | Clever | 2 Heart, 1 Curiosity |
| Cathal | Loyal | 2 Guts, 1 Endurance |
| Cuan | Playful | 2 Endurance, 1 Speed |
Since Hotfix 4 these points are no longer assigned automatically. Your pup keeps them, but it's up to you whether you add them. In practice your choice of pup now comes down to looks and personality rather than locking in your stats.
📊 The Five Wolf Pup Stats and Their Auras
Each stat grows through a specific activity. From the first point on, your pup gives off an aura that buffs you. Since Hotfix 4, three of the five auras also grant a Virtue, with one extra Virtue point per stat rank.
| Stat | Trained by | Aura |
|---|---|---|
| Guts | fighting together | Stability, plus Courage |
| Speed | travelling through Midrath together | movement speed |
| Endurance | playing fetch | Life, plus Grace |
| Curiosity | dungeons, chests, treasure hunting | rarer items, Rare Chests only |
| Heart | petting, fishing, rescuing animals | Spirit, plus more Life recovery from healing Casts and Life Elixirs |
Heart no longer boosts all three Virtues. The split is now Guts for Courage, Endurance for Grace and Heart for Spirit.
Since Hotfix 3 the game shows the exact strength of each aura: hover over the aura icon in the pup's stat screen. The patch notes themselves give no numbers. Since Hotfix 5, hovering over one of your pup's auras also highlights the stat it belongs to, so you no longer have to work out which aura comes from where.
What Changed for Individual Stats
- Guts: since Hotfix 4 your pup has to witness more fights before it gains experience. Hotfix 5 fixed pups earning Guts after you abandoned a combat encounter, so running from a fight no longer counts.
- Endurance: since Hotfix 5 Fetch drains less energy, but you have to play it a few times in a row before your pup can earn Endurance progress.
- Speed: since Hotfix 3 it's trained through velocity, not just time spent running, so you need to actually cover ground. The aura was lowered to match Orengall's “Hunter's Tear”, and Hotfix 4 shortened the time needed to earn progress.
- Curiosity: per Hotfix 4 it only works with Rare Chests, and its percentage bonus was reduced.
➕ Allocating Points Since Hotfix 4
The pup's stat screen in the Nightfold shows temperament, bond and energy at the top, then a training bar and the five stats with five paw icons each. Filled paws are allocated points. Once a stat has enough training, the “Add” prompt on its line becomes active. Press and hold it to allocate the point.
Two things to keep in mind. You can only allocate into stats you've actually trained. And an allocated point is permanent: there's no respec yet, and according to Hotfix 4 Digital Extremes is still thinking about one.
Hotfix 4 reset every pup's stats once while keeping all training progress, so you could reallocate. It also fixed pups going past the 15-point cap.
How to Tell What You're Training
A small gold icon pops up above your pup whenever an action counts toward a stat. It's the same icon as in the stat screen: a shield with a paw for Guts, a heart for Heart. We've seen both in our own game, the shield right after a fight, so you can tell at a glance which stat is growing.
⛏️ New in Hotfix 5: Your Pup Digs Up Treasure
Hotfix 5 (October 8, 2026) added a new pup activity. The official notes say: “Wolfpups can now dig around Midrath to uncover buried treasures!” According to Digital Extremes, all sorts of treasure lies buried beneath soil and salt, rare finds as well as common ones.
For training, the key part is what digging does not do:
- It isn't influenced by any stat or aura, so a high Curiosity doesn't get you better finds.
- It doesn't train any stat.
- It doesn't drain energy.
So digging is a free bonus that has no effect on your spread. What the notes don't say: how digging is triggered and what exactly your pup can turn up. We'll add both once we've confirmed them in our own game.
🎯 Which Spread Fits Which Playstyle
Since 15 points cover three maxed stats, you pick three out of five and should train only those. These suggestions are our own reading of the auras, not official builds:
| Playstyle | Three maxed stats | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Melee | Guts, Endurance, Speed | Stability, Life, Courage and Grace |
| Magick | Heart, Endurance, Speed | Spirit, healing, Life |
| Loot | Curiosity, Speed, Heart | rarer items from Rare Chests, faster travel |
| Virtues | Guts, Endurance, Heart | all three Virtues, 5 ranks each |
For a Spirit build, for example with the Ode Tempest Pact, Heart is the first pick. Ciar already brings 2 Heart from its temperament, though since Hotfix 4 that's no longer required.
⚡ Energy: Plan for About 5 Hours of Rest
Only training costs energy. Simply having your wolf pup with you uses none. Once its energy runs out, it goes back to the Nightfold to sleep, and according to the patch notes it takes about five hours before you can call it again. If you want to train on purpose, do it at the start of a play session.
🍖 Kibble and Biscuits: Recipes and Effects
Verminia makes both; since Hotfix 2 her menu option reads “Brew Elixirs and Pup Treats”. According to the patch notes, Ode'n hunters also drop food. You get Plaited Freshfish and Clappie Pail when you keep fish you catch; see our Soulframe fishing guide.
| Treat | Recipe | Effect | Too much of it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canid Kibble | 5 Plaited Freshfish, 2 Toe of Ode, 1 Clappie Pail | less energy used while training | pup gets sluggish and sleepy |
| Canid Biscuits | 5 Clappie Pail, 2 Jaden Drops, 1 Plaited Freshfish | learns better for a short time | sugar crash, tires faster |
You carry at most 5 Kibble and 5 Biscuits and feed through the Gear Wheel. Since Hotfix 3 you can cancel feeding with Escape without losing the treat.
Fixed in Hotfix 5: before that hotfix, Canid Kibble and Canid Biscuits had their effects swapped in the game. They now work as listed in the table: Kibble lowers energy drain while training, Biscuits help your pup learn better for a short time. If treats behaved the other way round for you before October 8, that was the bug.
🪵 Throwing Sticks: Training Endurance
You pick up a stick like any normal drop. It briefly takes your weapon slot, and you can swing it and throw it. When your pup brings it back, Endurance gets progress, and with it the aura for Life and Grace.
Hotfix 5 changed Fetch in two ways. It drains less energy than before, but a single throw no longer does much: you have to play Fetch a few times in a row before your pup can earn Endurance progress. Petting is also disabled while your pup is fetching a stick, and petting now has lower priority than other context actions, so you won't trigger it by accident as often.
💞 Bond: Six Ranks, Separate from Training
The bond runs independently of training. Hotfix 4 added a rank 0, so the titles are now Wild (0), Tame (1), Loyal (2), Loving (3), Devoted (4) and Soulbound (5). The notes don't say exactly what raises the bond or what the ranks give you.
⏳ What You Can't Do Yet
- Respec: allocated points can't be reset, and Hotfix 5 doesn't change that.
- Riding: the grown wolf as a mount comes in a later update, not with Preludes 16.
